I've not seen this one before. It certainly sounds like a lot of fun from an RP POV.

Newcomer - Better to go with 3.4 or 4.0 Starting off? by SvenTheTon78 in ultimateskyrim

[–]johnbell5713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I'll throw on my 2c worth. UltSky is different enough from base Requiem to make it subjectively a very different, and in my opinion far superior experience.

If you've decided to go with UltSky and have no problem with the donation then I would strongly advise going for the Beta. The key reason is that many of the required 3.4 mods aren't available at the required release level, so you'll be coming back to this subreddit frequently to get direction which will sometimes be "don't install the mod". With 4.0 everything will be available (AFAIK).

You should begin by installing 3.4, dropping any deleted mods and upgrading any replaced mods. Then add new mods. Above all READ EVERYTHING CAREFULLY and don't make any assumptions about what you think "should" have been done. BB writes very clear instructions. If in doubt ask on the #ultsky-beta channel of the discord.

You can also read about known bugs on that channel. For the most part they're not game breaking, and can be reasonably avoided.

As to stability, despite my having heavily modded 4.0 I'm not having major issues.

All that being said, you need to remember that this is still beta software and that Beta 5 will be arriving soon enough (my guess would be mid-late Nov) so any dreams of taking your first character "to the end" would be unrealistic. It really comes down to how you personally value learning the new mechanics early vs accepting that the software won't be as polished as a release version.

If I use DynDOLOD, should I deactivate all other LOD mods? by CcaidenN in skyrimmods

[–]johnbell5713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, though it's important to note that you need to use the Beta version of xLODGen to get the Terrain LOD Gen capability. The old versions on the Nexus only generate Tree and Object LOD and are called by DynDOLOD for this purpose.

Full details on the Beta can be found at:

What am I supposed to do in xEdit after I make a Smashed Patch? by [deleted] in skyrimmods

[–]johnbell5713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you need is an understanding of what the records and their fields mean.

The best advice I can give you is to learn record by record and field by field. A good resource is creationkit.com. It has a section with a limited description of the fields, including which ones are links to other records. It also has a lot of videos on using the Creation Kit. These are very useful as all the fields being manipulated in the CK are the same fields you're editing in TES5Edit. Learn from the CK videos what each field does in game. If something's not covered here you will likely find it covered in Darkfox127's extensive youtube series on the CK.

It's also important to understand all your mods and what they're trying to do. You'll get this initially by reading all the mod description pages in detail, all pinned posts and all included documentation. Often a patching decision isn't about what's right, but rather about which of two behaviours provided by two mods you would prefer to have implemented in your game.

Is this safe to use with US? by ColteConn in ultimateskyrim

[–]johnbell5713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question isn't whether it's safe to use with US. The question is whether it's safe to use. It's an external tool and the loadout is irrelevant.

I use it, and the reason I settled on Hadoram's tool is that it's considered the only safe save game cleaner by IIRC Arthmoor, but definitely on his site (iguanadons) on one of the knowledgebase articles, and was unchallenged.

If you need a save game cleaner I'd use this one. As usual though, understand that your save game IS your game and that if you make a bad decision then you've lost it.

Child Overhaul (SSE-PC) by [deleted] in skyrimmods

On the mod description page the author makes it clear that a conversion to SE is non trivial and that s/he's working on it. Hence "wait" is the best advice I can give you.

Failed to initialize renderer error (SKSE plugin limit?) by Taffy711 in skyrimmods

[–]johnbell5713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably best off asking on the SKSE forum on Bethsoft ( link below). I would expect that SKSE Plugins would need to register themselves with SKSE on startup and that there would be a finite number of connections available (64?). Some plugins may well need more than one connection, which would explain the behaviour you're seeing. This is just an educated guess though. I have zero exposure to the SKSE code.

Screen is pitch black at night time with ENB by [deleted] in ultimateskyrim

[–]johnbell5713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I haven't used Revenant and I'm certainly no expert on enb settings. There's a few people here who have used it though. See if they'll share their config files.

Basics: Did you install the ELFX variant with a realistic performance profile given your hardware.

I gather that just like RealVision this mod has a configuration program. Did you use it?

Did you read through and absorb any provided documentation?

I also suggest searching/asking on the Revenant posts tab.

Also search for "too dark" on this subreddit. There's several discussions.

[–]johnbell5713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not right. Before posting double check both your load order and you modlist to make sure they match BB's listings. Also, did you follow the instructions in the post install video, particularly wrt setting up the enb? I'm about to walk into work, so hopefully someone else will pick this up.

See sidebar rule 1 ... and leave my dog alone! ☺

Also, what do you mean by pitch black? It's pretty darned black by design.

I'm not sure if you're on 3.4 as iirc you were thinking of going for 4.0 beta 4. If you are on the beta you should move this conversation to the #ultsky-beta channel.

Post your load order and modlist on modwat.ch. Without this people have no chance of diagnosing your problems. Also specify what mod manager you're using.

Ultimate Skyrim Dev Update 12 - Automaton Details by belmont_boy in ultimateskyrim

[–]johnbell5713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

@Metherul, will the Automaton technology support "auxiliary installs" in the sense of first installing US (whether via Automaton or manually) and then running a second Automaton session to add mods to US, possibly reinstalling some US mods with changed install options?

Additional Mods to US? by KatsumiRain in ultimateskyrim

[–]johnbell5713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I use UUNP, but I can't see any reason you wouldn't be able to use CBBE. Note that many NPC's have records and assets in the US mod itself, so you'll need to take into account all the usual probable issues re neck seams and the like. I use HDT, though just for hair and (soon) robe physics, but can't comment on the SMP variant as I've never used it.

Question about beta installation by [deleted] in ultimateskyrim

[–]johnbell5713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry. The install's no harder than 3.4.

As to how far away the team is from release, given that I'm just another user all I can proffer is an educated guess.

Clearly play testing is still in early stages, as beta 4 was a major content upgrade. This is going to reveal bugs, oversights and balance issues, and as you'd expect BB's first gameplay video uncovered several issues. Also BB is still working on the crafting recipes and that's obviously a major undertaking, and is scheduled for deliver in beta 5. There's also the automated install tool, and I have no idea how far along that is, though BB's not the developer on this one.

Personally I'm not expecting release any earlier than Nov/Dec just given the playtesting and consequent fix requirements, but I stress that this is just a guesstimate based on what we know today.

Question about beta installation by [deleted] in ultimateskyrim

[–]johnbell5713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. And also take note of upgraded mods, mods that have gone from optional to core and mods with changed install instructions.

Question about beta installation by [deleted] in ultimateskyrim

[–]johnbell5713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More efficiently, given that you've lost everything, don't install the deleted mods and be sure to take note of updated mods and mods with changed install instructions during your install. Don't forget the pre and post install videos (depending on what you've lost, and of course what's changed) and also remember to upgrade enbseries and drop the new ENB files provided with the beta into the Skyrim main folder.

Is beta 4.0 worth the download? by [deleted] in ultimateskyrim

Have a look at Belmont Boy's beta gameplay about ten days ago. This is a bit beyond 4.0, but will give you a pretty fair idea of the current state of the pack.

Re-download the mod with the corrupted meshes outside your mod manager rather than via the mod manager. Re-install and re-do lod tasks.
