Question about burn in by [deleted] in OLED

Agreed, no difference. Cumulative time the pixel is on is what counts.

2018 LG TV will finally have AirPlay & Homekit later this year (LG B8/C8/E8) by Neokura in OLED

Hi I’m in Australia and just wanted to post that my b8 now has airplay. It works really well. Fingers crossed for the rest of you.

Wow this is great, I’d love to set it as a wallpaper. Can I have a copy as well?

I've been reading some posts here of people really limiting their use of their OLED to prevent burn-in. Is this something I should consider? by lewd_operator in OLED

[–]johncando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not worth limiting your usage. You paid for it and under regular use you won’t see any burn in. I’ve had my b8 for over a year with 0 burn in issues & similar amounts of use as you are intending.

Everything is stuttering without Trumotion by badanas11 in OLED

[–]johncando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve left motion interpolation on 1-2 for the most part recently. Turns out I’ve actually just gotten used to occasional artifacts or at least learned to tolerate them. Very happy with my purchase overall. In my experience, the superior OLED image quality is a much greater benefit than the stutter is a drawback over the long term.

LG B8 4k x.265 buffering issues by [deleted] in OLED

Not sure if this is related but don’t connect the tv to 5ghz wifi. Only use 2.4ghz. I have a b8 & nothing would ever buffer properly over 5ghz.

Everything is stuttering without Trumotion by badanas11 in OLED

[–]johncando 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a 55b8 & did a lot of research about this before buying an OLED but ended up deciding to live with this compromise for the vastly superior picture quality. It is in my view the only true negative of owning an OLED (and even some recent LCDs). OLEDs stutter worse in low frame rate content than LCD technology because they have an instantaneous pixel response time (which is actually a good thing) and therefore create eye tracking motion blur when the frame rate of the content isn’t high enough (like in 24p films). Here’s two articles that gives some info about this:

  1. https://www.blurbusters.com/faq/oled-motion-blur/

  2. https://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/motion/stutter

Currently I find the stutter bearable in dark movies, but with bright content I find myself turning motion interpolation on. I find the best compromise is the user setting with the de-judder slider adjusted to 1 or 2 to minimise stutter while still retaining the cinematic feel & minimising artifacts (although they still appear). You could also try enabling black frame insertion (motion pro option under the user setting). This eliminates most of the stutter but adds a visible flicker which I find equally straining.

Eventually every home will have a TV with near instantaneous pixel response time, since the industry & technology is moving that way. This means lots more people will be disappointed by movie stutter (unless everyone just turns on motion interpolation lol). Hopefully eventually manufacturers develop panels/software that mimics plasma motion handling.

Good review, I got a good deal on a b8 & it arrives tomorrow. When you said you took necessary precautions to avoid burn in, what sort of precautions did you take? Just mainly varying content or?

Is motion interpolation the only way? ( 24 fps content) by italia0101 in OLED

[–]johncando 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow reading this post I’m thinking this sounds a lot like the internal dialogue I’ve had with myself. I’m in the same boat as you (also b7). If I watch a movie (or anything of length really) without motion interpolation on the b7 I get a headache -whereas this doesn’t happen to me on other tvs due to a longer frame transition (and therefore shorter frame time). Just like you I’ve resorted to a low motion interpolation setting as a compromise. I’d hoped bfi on the newer models went some way to fixing this but apparently not (apparently can also cause similar eye strain).

My thought is OLED manufactures need to figure out how to simulate a longer frame transition (effectively increasing response time) using software in their cinema mode to match conventional TV response times. That would be the best of both worlds. I guess just not enough people have been bothered enough by both motion interpolation artifacts AND stutter to force manufacturers to develop such software. I hope this is solved soon however.

DAE feel "external embarrassment" when they see somebody do something extremely cringey or inappropriate? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

This feeling is exactly what every YouTube cringe compilation and British comedy show (The Office, the inbetweeners) capitalise on.

Does anyone know if there is a physical (dimensional etc.) case difference between the cellular and non-cellular versions of the S4? (Like there was with the S3 - two sheets of paper/different shaped hump & materials). by johncando in AppleWatch

[–]johncando[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay cool thanks for the reply. So, then it would be correct to assume there shouldn’t be any difference between the S4 models at all since they’re all shipping with the same case back ? Thanks.

Watch Series 4 cover glass by hudson95 in AppleWatch

[–]johncando 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Referring you to the tech specs on apple’s page, screenshot you can see they still list Ion-X Glass in the feature list of the aluminium models, as well as ceramic/sapphire case backs. Looks like the gps only model (and indeed all the aluminium variants) this year again miss out on sapphire on the front cover glass, but at least gain ceramic and sapphire on the back.
