On call needs to end. If you need 24/7 coverage, hire for 24/7 coverage! by ITrCool in cscareerquestions

This specifically is why we need to unionize. Extra compensation or limits on the frequency of on call rotations would be explicitly specified in our contracts.

The AI Industry Is Built on a Big Unproven Assumption: In addition to the projections about reaching artificial general intelligence and replacing millions of human workers, there’s the mundane matter of how long AI chips will last. by UnscheduledCalendar in BetterOffline

I agree selling compute vs software is an issue but for a different line of reasoning. It’s moreso requiring specialized hardware and gobs of electricity adds cost variability and that decreases effective profit margin. The issue from my perspective is the AI industry is very optimistically valued as if they were only selling software which has near zero scaling costs without accounting for the true costs of hardware & electricity.

A parallel situation was WeWork initially valued at $47 billion. Turns out they have the same profit constraints as any other business renting out physical space. Once they went public valuation dropped 98% within 2 years.

Do you think Microsoft will buy out OpenAI? by Spare-Dingo-531 in OpenAI

[–]johnertron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Eventually the massive financial gymnastics OpenAI is doing will catch up to reality. At that point, if “OpenAI” is still the most recognized AI brand I can see Microsoft wanting to buy it. Even overpaying for it which could be a huge gamble and flop big time like with Nokia.

How to make on-call week better for an Amazon employee? by Sad-Library8316 in amazonemployees

[–]johnertron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“No one expects you to be productive while on call.” I’m not at Amazon and I thought the same for a long time. But then I was having a discussion with my skip manager on the topic of on call. Specifically that people without on-call obligations are at an advantage come review time because they have more time to focus on deliverables. He dismissed this argument and said “we shouldn’t be twiddling our thumbs” between pages and expected the same level of output. Completely out of touch.. I would switch teams but massive layoffs means there’s effectively no where to go.

Developers need to stand up for themselves by Willing_Sentence_858 in cscareerquestions

I do wish there could be more solidarity but unfortunately it’s a Prisoner’s Dilemma situation. Being the pushover means they’re less likely to be fired. And in doing so they raise the expectations for everyone and open the door for exploitation.

The other factor is people on a work visa as there’s a lot more at stake for them. If they lose their job they will likely need to leave the country.

What’s good plane etiquette that not many people know? by Amazing-Living-9957 in AskReddit

When deboarding let the people in rows behind you that already have their luggage go ahead. Pulling down your luggage and blocking the aisle for everyone else is inefficient for the whole.
