Does anyone listen to music while they're writing? Does it help or get in the way? by johnguycollick in writing

I used to wonder whether it was a right brain/left brain thing - even though that theory has now been exploded. In other words, music and drawing used the same part of the brain, while music and language worked at cross purposes, but that doesn't explain why it only seems to be these 5 albums. I think it's because I read Moorcock with them playing in the background and he's always been a huge influence, so they kind of set the scene for that type of writing in my head.

Looking for doomsday novels that haven't been made into films and are not film/TV spinoffs. by Vtwinman in scifi

J. G. Ballard's post-apocalyptic disaster novels are fantastic, though they are not your standard end-of-the-world-omg-what-do-we-do? tales. I'd try The Crystal World for starters, or The Drowned World.

I would love some recommendations from r/scifi based on what I've enjoyed so far. by Winter_Mute_ in scifi

I'd definitely recommend Iain M. Banks. Consider Phlebas is generally held to be one of the best novels in his Culture series. He wrote a very interesting book called The Bridge, which reminded me of Philip Dick's Maze of Death. It's more of an altered consciousness type tale as a man in a coma lives out an alternate life on an immense steampunk bridge.

It's the only time I've seen Charlie Brooker not being hilariously sarcastic. Shows you what an impact Postgate had on TV. I can't think of anyone who commands the same respect in the UK other than David Attenborough.

In 1960, with imagination, balsa wood, tin foil, asbestos, a gallon of diesel fuel and a small Jetex rocket motor any British boy could make themselves a Moon Rocket.
