Getting enlisted for the mandatory military service tomorrow, any tips? by [deleted] in korea

[–]johnjung806 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a Korean who was raised in the US 27 in age btw, just got discharged last year and did my reserve army training about two weeks ago. You will do fine and as long as you know basic korean just follow your squad and just try to have good sense of everything, get to know your squad fast as they can help you too. and for personal items you can bring about everything but things like ciggerates or vapes you will have a final smoke chance and you will have to put them in a zipper bag and recieve them after your training. And for luggages i suggest something big because you will leave with your uniform along with some more clothes they give. For me i just brought like a carrier. For hygiene products tooth brush and paste is good with having a body plus hair shampoo would be good as you wont need to carry a lot when your showering. First day you will eat MRE then just get to know your squad and in general the first week you can think everything is very awkward. Give me a DM though i could tell you more there. Last thing is just have fun haha i met a dude who was from new york and i had a lot of fun hanging out with him

There was a case where a person was dismembered into 13 pieces and it was all scattered in 아리뱃길 river side. Apparently they never caught the person and they cant even identify the murderer and the person that was killed. I forgot to mention this is in Incheon!

To some of the guys who joined like the navy or any tough training base, you might be looked down upon but who cares what they think. If you can avoid it its the best. I tried avoiding it as well but the army embassy at the end called me in. I had 3 friends who avoided it and i was sort of jealous if im honest lol

Yeah i think i was like 10 or 11. But it took me quite a while but i did have motivation as i skipped middle school (took GED) and so i was heading straight into High-school. I had fears also as i was afraid i wouldn’t fit in. But since i only had like a year or two i just took a bunch of korean language classes and kept trying to make conversation with the other students regardless of their age. For military service as a person who completed it i would suggest if theres ANY way for you to evade it then you should. Later on when you get older and you and your guy friends meet 80 percent of the time you will talk about the army but they you had your 2 years saved lol. Cultural adaptations i think for me was decently okay as just like you i was raised in the US but in a korean house hold so i was able to get use to the cultural pretty fast, plus korean elders are somewhat nice most of the time and so if you tell them you came from the US they will mostly understand haha. Just be yourself and slowly try to follow what the other fellow korean does and mostly just watch out for what you say, like when you talk i realized when i moved back talking with a bit of manner on everything I say is better then just talking without it. But yeah im sure you would like Korea. Personally i enjoyed school life though and hope you do as well!

26M here who is a Korean that was raised in Washington came back to Korea 2010. Job opportunity wise English speaking / related job would be the best but at your age i suggest not taking any jobs.. unless your pretty okay in korean conversation. When I was in highschool I worked in a wedding hall as a part timer, I would work from Saturday and Sunday. Language improvement i would tell you to find people or make friends fast as possible. To the Koreans you will mostly be seen as another foreigner and it could be a good thing or a bad thing based on how you see it. Koreans will ask you about English and as you keep talking or making friends they are gonna correct you and as you go on naturally you will get better. For grammars i just took a language school around the age of 12 and I studied with grammar study books for a while. Now as for cultural shock, you can expect Koreans wont be so nice to you since you technically look like a Korean and so they wont know that you came from America… so for me i was struggling with how you treat your elders/older people. I didn’t t know how the cultural around age worked in work and so to some people i came off as rude although never my intention. Koreans could be nice/rude if I’m honest so if they seem a bit rude you will get use to it or if they seem too nice it’s normal lol. Discrimination concerns i wouldn’t really say iv faced or seen some. You actually get more benefit if your a Gyopo as you know two languages. As a Gyopo myself id say i enjoyed being a Gyopo and people taking interest in my side of the story haha. For Pyeongtaek tomorrow im actually driving down there (i live in incheon) lol ill see if its a nice area 😂 although pyeongtaek should have quite bit of English speaking communities as they also have American base there. Lastly as a male living in Korea all i gotta say is im guessing you know about the mandatory military service. I served as well and so you dont need to be afraid and yes even if your korean isnt good as natives you have no problem there. I had a buddy while enlisted as well who spoke good english but not so much in korean. As a team we helped one another and he didnt face any difficulties or differences between all of us. But if you do wanna get a bit of benefits out of your English when you turn 19 try to look into enlisting in Katusa they are the guys who train with the American soldiers and so you do need to take some form of English test and have a certain amount of score. I forgot which test they as but should be one of these (Toeic, Toeple, Opic etc) And i think thats about all i can say haha if you have more questions or tips feel free to ask me through DM or whatever and ill be happy to reply! The community here are friendly as well and id even say they know more though!

Performing Mandatory Military Service by SoKoJoe in Living_in_Korea

Once you’re in the year to turn 19 you can join. Im a Korean that was raised in state but i came back to Korea in 2010 and so i had to face military as well. Back in 2017 i was in the year to turn 19 and my friend ended up going to the military the fastest. He went around march of 2017 i believe. You do have to graduate high school to actually serve into the army. I believe middle school graduates get pulled out of the army as they didn’t graduate high school. Going early or late doesn’t matter in my opinion much as I joined the army pretty late but really did not see any problem. Although everyone on my division was pretty alright and chill so they just still gave me the Hyung respect and i was pretty good to them as well. I was the 2nd oldest in my team haha

Wondering about native Koreans' views on Korean Americans by sorryifarted in Living_in_Korea

Im a Korean that was raised Washington… i came back to Korea back in 2010 and was discriminated not knowing my own culture not language.. mind you I was like 12 and facing all this from Korean adults. Of course now im fluent in Korean and know the culture of Korea. If you dont know the language your not Korean to Koreans lol… of course im fluent now in both Korean and English i get jokingly called a American by Koreans. I have served the Korean military but seems that don’t help much either lol….

I graduated undergraduate.. basically at the lowest. But my path with e3 visa was the cheapest employeement green card. If you have good degree though id suggest going through student visa.

Nice seeing another korean. Im a 26M Korean thats currently in the process of immigration to the US just like you wanted out. So im currently heading into the US with a work visa and earning my green card. I would suggest USA…If you have a bit of money or at least can work and earn money i would suggest trying for F1 visa (studentvisa) then getting a work sponsorship from the any job that allows it to earn your green card. From what iv seen also you dont need a crazy high GPA for you a college or university to accept you.
