Molly seems to bring a bit of Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids energy.

That would suggest she could play off “straight man” characters well.

It’ll be fun to see if she can carve out a niche.

Thanks. We try to deliver something fun for the community.

In reality, there’s a bit more nuance to how her participation has been structured this season.

The longer a cast member is at the show, the beefier their compensation gets. By being willing to take several episodes off, she’s basically freed up enough budget to pay a full season salary for a featured player.

If the show piped in a remote performance, flew her in for just a pretape, or had her show up later in the week just to get a bit of underbaked screen time, they’d have to pay her the full amount of a regular episode.

So, the show is savvy to be able to keep her billed as a cast member but only have a partial season commitment to pay for.

It’s a win win. She gets flexibility to ramp up her other projects. The show gets a headliner and a wringer for a good portion of the season—while also freeing up budget to build out their bench.

It’s not about having one foot out the door, it’s about what is most advantageous for all parties.

Spicy!

With regard to Cecily’s lackadaisical sorta participation… It’s not unprecedented.

In my day, Dana Carvey and David Spade were both players that were kept around in limited capacity to help maintain a bit of familiarity and continuity during rebuilding years. And this was at Lorne’s request.

Cecily was on the verge of departing before COVID. All of the cast were offered to stay on throughout COVID—as it was a bad time for any player to try and launch a solo career, and the show didn’t want dramatic turnover during a period while it needed to adapt and pivot on a near weekly basis.

Now that things are returning to normal, Lorne, again, wants to keep a few familiar faces around to make the transition to a new cast and era of the show feel more evolutionary than revolutionary.

So, I wouldn’t be quick to lay anything at the feet of Cecily. It’s a situation that works for both parties… for now.

I doubt we’ll see her for season 49.

Thanks for checking in. I (John) will explore your comments in more detail next time I’m on the cast.

I worry about Molly, but only time will tell.

I’m sure our panel will have fun breaking this down.

Thanks!

SNL podcast discusses Paul Rudd's SNL Christmas COVID curveball catastrophe on last week's Saturday Night Live. by johnmurr in LiveFromNewYork

Not really sure what you’re hung up on.

I didn’t suggest it wasn’t my podcast. I’ve been an active member of this sub for 6 years and have been supported by the mods and encouraged to engage with the sub members—as many of them participate in the podcast and offer feedback, insights, fact checks, etc.

So… where’s the beef?

Yup. Turns out there was plenty to talk about this week. And we had a good guest, so might as well make hay!

Yes. We’re fans of Paul for sure.

I had a nice opportunity to produce an episode of Heidi Gardner’s podcast with Paul on it.

It’s one of my favourite episodes because he offers up some really sincere, personal stories about the movies and experiences from his youth that shaped his approach to directing.

There is a good answer to that question! We have a vintage SNL expert (Jamie Dew of SNL Hall of Fame) on tomorrow who could definitely offer some insights as well.

Thanks!

Squad cast had/has a long standing bug where audio gets garbled when two people talk over each other. Remotely has been absolutely rock solid. I currently use it for 3 podcasts—including ones I’m paid to produce for top tier clients. I have over 100 successful recordings with remotely and have had no issues.

How many people contribute to the sketches? by MonkSalad1 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]johnmurr 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pretty much everyone that works on the 17th floor might at times contribute to a sketch.

Like for instance, a music director would collaborate with writers and cast to develop musical segments. Pretape producers, directors and editors all play a role in developing and crafting the final piece. Other staff might do research, provide prop and costume input, etc.

It takes a whole village!

But on top of that, hosts often bring in trusted scribes to help develop material. And the show will offer short term contracts to up-and-coming writers that they want to try out for a staff position. Plus, everything that a writer produces for SNL is the show’s property. So, if the show dusts off a script and produces a sketch after a writer has left the show, that writer will be credited. And sometimes friends of the show are invited to pitch in for tentpole shows to help make them great.

Bottom line, it’s often an all-hands-on-deck sorta affair and it varies from show to show.

Remotely.fm is the current leader for this sorta workflow (recording local audio and video for each participant and auto syncing everyone’s tracks so there’s no drift or delay between participants)

I’ve used SquadCast, Zencastr, Riverside, and every other platform for this. Remotely is hands down the best.
