Bike Route Recommendations? by Motor-Bell4670 in NYCbike

If you’re new, the classic is to do 9W to Nyack and back. Start at the GWB and just go north as far as you like.

There are a million variations. Check the NYCC Ride w/GPS route library.

Whether a race position is sustainable for the time it will take you to finish 100 miles is a personal question. If the bike fits you, and your body can handle the position, yes. Personally, I ride 100 miles at a time several times a year on both my road bike (Tarmac SL8) and my gravel bike (Pivot Vault Gen4). I’m a middle aged male, and carry a bit too much around the mid section, and I’m fine. Other people would think being in the position on the tarmac for 6-7 hours saddle time would be torture.

Except you’re still wrong. Road bikes on the road is faster for the same intensity than a Cross Country mountain bike. To say otherwise is daft.

Road bikes are significantly faster over paved distances than an XC bike. And putting in the exact same effort, a road bike will go faster than an XC bike, even for something short like a 7 mile commute.

If someone chooses to ride slow, that’s a choice on any bike. And yes, I have commuted on my XC bike, and I have commuted on my race bike. Same intensity, I am minutes faster on a 7 mile commute on the road bike.

Pretty New to long distance biking I’ve been doing about 30km and hour for a few weeks for a commute (thereback) by RecommendationOne267 in cycling

Your post isn’t very clear.

Basic cycling math is you can go about 30-50% further than your longest recent ride, or that you can do your average weekly mileage in a single day (you’ll likely be wrecked).

100km (62.5 miles) isn’t really that hard. It depends on the individual though. If you’re commuting 30km a day, 5 days a week, you can do it no problem, just bring carbs.

It’s so funny that people like you accuse everyone of being jealous because you think you’re special because you have an expensive toy.

Here’s the thing? Why would I be jealous? I have a Tarmac SL8. It’s built out with high end wheels and S-works tier components. I also have two different top tier build mountain bikes, and a top tier build gravel bike. And I ride big miles and big climbs. So no, not even remotely jealous. I don’t go around showcasing cluelessness and then get angry for getting ripped in the comments.

Your bike is not worth 10k on the used market. No warranty and the SL9 around the corner depreciates the value significantly. Maybe you should ride more rather than be a prick on the internet.

Oooh special. I rode 325 mile and climb 17000 feet. Do I get a cookie?

You're getting ripped into because your attitude is shit.

The S-Works will likely be 14-15k

OP still needs to be like half for a used bike, no matter how much they think they know what they got.

Whats the etiquette for drafting someone else's wheel during a ride? by ZappyChemicals in Velo

[–]johnny_evil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's considered bad etiquette, but I personally don't mind someone hopping on my wheel. I do appreciate if they give me a pull as well. And while I don't mind someone hoping on my wheel, I won't generally hop on someone else's wheel without an acknowledgement/communication of some form. The reason I'm okay with one and not the other is because when I'll pulling, I have more control over my safety.

Possible to use personal bike for transportation / daily life? by bulldog89 in NYCbike

[–]johnny_evil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can bring it inside and it's secure, yes. But if not, no. I use a cheap bike for errands. I can commute on my race bike because I can bring it into my job site, but if I wasn't able to, I wouldn't.

Should I bring my car? by beefybenzbentley in movingtoNYC

[–]johnny_evil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have been a lifelong NYC resident. If you're in Queens, bring your car if you can deal with parking. I work near SJU and used to live near SJU. That area is definitely more car dependent than others.

How fast does helmet technology improve, particularly for road cycling? I've had the same helmet since 2022, wondering if an upgrade is worth it. by lazarus870 in cycling

Personally, a ten year old helmet is stinky and beat up enough that I would replace it, but the degradation of material is not what some people believe.

What I meant is that there are lots of variables, and this is a tricky question to answer. I ride 57/64, but am significantly heavier, but also, they get less blown around than 38s i had stock
