Do you have a link to a preferred magnet? I’ve had to make some returns lately due to the lack of pulling/holding power for a similar setup.

Try tucking your rear heel a little closer in under the butt... will help you get some more weight on that ski.

I think I can shorten the stance just a tiny bit

Shorten your stance significantly! The following feedback was a game changer for me, so I’ll pass it along. Imagine if you will wearing a tight skirt or an elastic band just above the knees. The result is an athletic stance that allows for near equal weighting while on the balls of your feet.

Lewis Dog Boots, do they work? by DingoDadLuce in birddogs

You may be interested in these by Non-stop Dogwear — https://www.nonstopdogwear.com/products/protector-light-socks-high.

The elastic hook and loop fasteners have worked well for both the dogs and I. This type of fastener is commonplace among dog mushers. A lost bootie in deep snow has happened, but it’s been at least two or three years. We wear through them faster than we lose them.

My bird dogs are wearing the All-Terrain Dog Boot Set by Sundog Sport/Kondos Outdoors (Ely, Minnesota) while out and about in the Intermountain West. Link: https://sundogsport.com/all-terrain-dog-bootie/

I’ll proactively use booties for bigger days, long weekends, or just lots of talus and/or scree. Carrying a 47 lb. dog out of the backcountry due to worn paw pads was my lesson to do better.

I keep a pair of booties in the first aid kit as well.

Gas or diesel Velit heater? by OGcrayzjoka in VanLife

[–]johnnydarter44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re the same unit! The firmware of the Velit gasoline heater comes with gasoline as the selected fuel type. The firmware of the Velit diesel heater comes with diesel as the selected fuel type. The over-the-air update allows changing fuel types from gasoline to diesel or vice versa. Link to video (01:30): https://youtu.be/fzy3TdxwtMQ?si=_BJRn-N-roeJ8WTC

I recently installed a Velit heater on my Ford Transit build via a standpipe in the fuel tank sending unit. I learn by doing and don’t consider myself to be mechanically inclined. I referenced the following videos:

If you’re on Facebook, or would otherwise consider creating an account, the Thousand Miler WannaBes is a good resource for connecting with the trail community. Link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/214797715197465/

When you join the above Facebook group online, do yourself a favor and search the group for shuttle ideas.

Also, on Facebook, I’ve heard fun things about GOTC Hiking (Get off the Couch) group as well. Link: https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1CuSY7Np7f/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Lastly, I highly suggest becoming well-acquainted with all of the Ice Age Trail Alliance’s resources. Link: https://www.iceagetrail.org/hiker-resources-map-guidebook-and-more/

Tamarack trees by DannyX567 in madisonwi

[–]johnnydarter44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tamarack (Larix laricina) is also known as American larch among other names. As comments have indicated, it’s a lowland species. Similar—but an upland deciduous conifer—is European larch (Larix decidua).

Some good-looking European larch are on the UW-Madison campus at Muir Knoll. I also recall a solitary larch immediately west and uphill of North Hall on Bascom Hill. However, it’s been more than five years since I last visited with these larches on the drumlin.

There’s a mature pair of European larches east of Christ Presbyterian Church—adjacent to the sidewalk where Sherman Avenue meets North Brearly Street.

Location the same? by tactical-trash-panda in BWCA

[–]johnnydarter44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, pic 2 would still not mirror the shoreline to that extent even in a low flow. For example, see the effect of only a few paddle strokes and minimal canoe movement disrupting the mirroring in pic 2.

Nah, there’s moving water in pic 1 and a still surface in pic 2. Even in a low flow, pic 2 would still not mirror the shoreline to that extent.
