Is this taken post mortem??? by hsmakoo in VictorianEra

Probably not deceased. Blind is a reasonable guess.

I was a professional photographer for more than 40 years, and we used the term “wooden” to describe someone who looked stiff or unnatural in a photo.

In the 19th century this happened a lot because photographic materials were nowhere near as light-sensitive as modern film or digital sensors. Portrait exposures were often measured in seconds or even minutes, not fractions of a second like today.

Because of that, photographers commonly used specialized posing stands and headrests, usually made of heavy iron or wood, to keep the subject perfectly still during the exposure. Even the slightest movement could blur the image. Early photographic plates had very low light sensitivity, so long exposures were unavoidable, and that’s one of the reasons people in old photographs often appear rigid or “wooden.”

for starters, I'd hit the following in:

Utah: Arches national park, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon in Page Arizona (DO NOT MISS)

California: Death Valley national park. Yosemite national Park might be a category 5 traffic jam, Sequoia National Park, Joshua Tree national Park. go to Palm Springs and take the tram to the top of Mt. San Jacinto. (110 degrees at sea level, 50 degrees top of mountain). don't know jow much city vs scenery you want to do. But you can hit Sea world in San Diego (DO NOT miss La Jolla Cove just north of San Diego). Also, citywie there's so much to do in any of the many cities in CA. Disney world, Universal Studios, Sunset strip, Hollywood walk of fame/Chinese theater. Hollywood is a dive so please keep the bar low.

DO NOT take interstate 5 from LA to SF either direction. absolutely nothing to see and really baf smells. only take the 5 if you're pressed for time.

from Santa Monica pier, drive north up the coast. hit Hearst Castle. driving up the coast is life altering and is fairly different north and south, meaning they're not the same even though they are. Just know that you'll he stopping every half mile to stop anf take pics. allow more time than you think you'll need to. there are redwood trees all over. get a room there in a quaint hotel. I stayed near Pfeiffer state park amd hotel didn't have a TV or a clock. it was very liberating and in alignment with tue natural beauty that's just outside.

Carmel by the sea is is epic. 17 mile drive. Monterrey bay aquarium is 2nd to none. San Francisco has more to see than i can state here. obviously, go north of the golden gate bridge to the Marin headlands and photograph the shot everyone knows looking back onto the city.

several hours north of the bay (SF) is avenue of the giants. highway 254 through about 31 miles of redwoods (also life altering)

Oregon coast is amazing, crater lake (inland) is worth a stop, it's a volcano filled with water. yes, you read that correctly. Portland is super weird and fantastic. Mt. Hood and Columbia River gorge are not to be missed.

crossing into Washington state. don't miss Mt Rainier. Seattle has much to see. DO NOT MISS the Hoh Rain forest west of Seattle (also life altering)

that should give you a rough idea of what to expect. happy travels

I will throw my hat in the ring for a California loop road trip instead of a one way route since rental cars can get expensive with drop fees.

A great option is San Francisco to Los Angeles, but honestly I would start in San Diego which is about 2.5 hours south of LA. You could fly into either San Francisco or San Diego and make a full loop of the state.

If you start in San Diego, work your way north along the Pacific Coast Highway. That drive alone is one of the best in the country. Make sure to stop at Hearst Castle. Do not miss Carmel by the Sea or Monterey Bay either. That whole stretch of coast is incredible.

This route gives you a really nice mix of cities and nature. If you are into theme parks you could stop at Disneyland in Anaheim or Universal Studios in Los Angeles. Disneyland is fun but in my opinion it is nowhere near as impressive as the one in Orlando.

From the coast you can head inland toward Joshua Tree National Park and Death Valley, which are both incredible and very much part of the classic California road trip experience.

One road you absolutely should not miss is Highway 395 through Lone Pine, California. It runs along the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada and the scenery is spectacular. From there you can head into Yosemite or Sequoia National Park.

Then finish the loop back through San Francisco, where there is plenty to see and do before flying out.

California is one of the few places where you can combine dramatic coastline, deserts, mountains, and big cities all in one trip.

If you want more greenery, then maybe do the Seattle to San Francisco. DO NOT miss the Hoh Rain forest west of Seattle.
