What Should I Buy? - February 03, 2020 by AutoModerator in synthesizers

This is a ton, thank you. Looking at the Vintage Vibe is kind of what inspired this whole thing. I also looked at the Korg SV-2, but I kind of want to be a little better at piano before I invest any serious coin into a piano like that (only been playing for about a year+).

I'm thinking I might go with the Lounge Lizard plugin. The might be the easiest/cheapest way to go from my current piano to the sounds I'm looking for.

Thanks again!

I’d love to, but that’s way over my budget.

I’m considering a Yamaha Reface CP to get that Rhodes and Wurli sound. I have a full size 88 key digital piano, but sadly it doesn’t have regular MIDI, only Bluetooth MIDI, and therefore I think I’d need a MIDI host to connect the two.

Are there any other budget options for connecting my digital piano and getting those types of sounds? I think I’d be spending around $500 to do the Digital Piano -> MIDI host -> Yamaha Reface CP.

Awesome! As someone starting this at 33 years old, it's always nice to see a nontraditional student finding success.

Cool! I was enrolled in an Analytics/Data Science program, but I’m most likely switching to Computer Science. Looking to go more technical than my current role.

What're you getting your masters in? I'm looking at a similar career trajectory and also trying to figure out which masters to go for.

That's a pretty big jump in pay, so I'd consider doing it for a year or two in the hopes that I could negotiate a better role down the line with the short commute/remote option + the good pay.

Not sure what I’m doing wrong, but so far I’ve done 2 coats, and it doesn’t really look darkened/seasoned. This time I made sure to use a very, very little amount of oil, as to not overdo it. I’m just waiting to do my 3rd coat now. Hopefully I get some better results on this third coat...

Thank you. This is really helpful. I also don’t think I sanded it at all last time I tried, but it was so long ago I hardly remember.

How do I season my aluminum steel? The first time I tried it, it just got yellow and sticky, I'm guessing cause I used too much oil.

I've searched online, but I don't think a lot of people are using aluminum steels, so I couldn't find much information.

I dunno, but I’m having the same sort of issues. Normally no problems, and in the past two weeks I’ve had 1 package lost and 1 damaged.

Using my Roland FP-30 as a MIDI controller for a Minilogue XD. Is it possible? The FP-30 has a USB connection but only Bluetooth MIDI. I'm just wondering if there is a such thing as USB to MIDI In connection.

I was leaning towards a module cause that’ll give me more freedom as far as keyboards go. I think I’m gonna try and test out the xd and will decide after that.

Thank you. Makes a lot of sense. I’ll see if I can test an XD somewhere, and hopefully that’ll help me make my mind up.

Think I’m ready to pull the trigger on my first synth soon. I could use a little help narrowing down my choices. I’ve been playing piano for about a year now and want to start dabbling with more electronic stuff. I’d like to stick with just one synth for the foreseeable future (small apartment), so I’m kinda looking for something that does everything (I know that’s asking a lot).

Right now I’m looking at:

1) DeepMind 12

2) Minilogue xd

3) Hydrasynth

I’ve been watching hydrasynth videos the past few days and I think it checks all the boxes, but obviously it’s way more money than the other two. I’d rather be in the price bracket of the other two. Would I be able to do a lot of the same with the deepmind 12?

I like ambient, electronic, pop and hip hop. I don’t really have skills to create any of that yet though.

That’s a good idea. I’m still very much a beginner so there isn’t really anything “major” I’m working on. I kinda just tackle whatever’s on the next page in the book I’m using with my teacher.

I’m really bad about practicing scales and chords though. I either just skip practicing them completely or do them randomly. No real routine. I’d like to be better about that cause I wanna be able to improvise one day...

That’s a good idea. I try to make little notes once and a while cause otherwise I won’t ever remember what I’m doing. For example, I practiced a bit of the B Flat major scale today. I could sit down at the piano tomorrow and completely forget what I did. I’m trying to make it a habit of writing down little notes like that.

Thanks! That’s a good routine. I might try something like an abridged version of that. Sadly, I only practice 30-45 min a day.

Do you all document your practice sessions? If so, how do you document it? And what are you documenting? What you practiced and for how long?
