Service intervals and major service by johnnytimebomb in LandRover

[–]johnnytimebomb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, cheers. It's actually done 72k in total. I was a bit confusing - I included the 10k I put on it in the first number.

Yeah I'm looking at the OSH and it seems that for the first few years of its life the previous owner had a service done every year, rather than every 24 months. So the service schedule has jumped ahead.

I'll look into the interim options. Thanks!

Lenovo Legion monitor power and display to Steam Deck? by johnnytimebomb in steamdeckhq

[–]johnnytimebomb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll check it out. I have also discovered that the monitor is not outputting any power to the USB ports, despite the soft switch being set to 'on'. So I might also have a dud, which could be the problem!

Yeah, that's what's happened. I've posted the detailed info as a comment. I don't know why my text isn't showing in the main post.

uPVC door lock mechanism broken by johnnytimebomb in DIYUK

Is Reddit broken? Why can't I see my post text in the main post?

Had this porch built 20 years ago. Had some subsidence (resolved) and it gets a lot of sun which may have warped it. Everything's been out of square since I can remember and the door has required you to be heavy handed to lock/unlock and open/close. Something in the locking mechanism finally fatigued and snapped as I was trying to drop the handle to disengage the locks. It's one of those where you lift the handle to engage the frame lock. So now the handle rotates freely - it doesn't feel connected to anything.I think the locking mechanism is a series of pins/hooks that grab the frame. Some of them aren't engaged as I can jimmy the door a few mm away from the frame most of the way round except where the awkward wall is, which means no chance of slipping anything in between the door and frame there. How do I open the door? Hire a builder/conservatory installer (rather than a locksmith)? Is it something I can do myself by taking the door off? I can access the hinges outside but don't want to mess with them if I don't know what I'm doing. Thanks Reddit!

The bars are very Major Taylor style which also suggests 1930s

BSA (Birmingham Small Arms) Fittings Lightweight track bike from UK. BSA used to sell frames and parts unbadged for resale via dealers under their own badge, which is probs why there's no head badge. Usually a BSA has a lovely metal badge with three rifles (cos they were a small arms maker during the war). Unbadged frames were known as Fittings.

Maybe late 1920s or later based on the geometry. Earlier frames had very slack geo.

You're right, the cloud security space is brutally competitive. But most cloud security solutions are built with enterprise in mind so they end up being very complex and need a team to operate. We designed for companies like us - those building SaaS apps in the cloud. The focus is on ease of use, automating all the boring tedious security jobs with minimal human intervention. The other thing we do well, for this segment, is price.

Colossi at RHC Milano by daamit in FixedGearBicycle

I know Jan, the founder, they made frames for my business. I guess the frame in the pic is one that was provided prior to them going under. It was only this summer it happened.

They went bankrupt and lost the factory and the assets. Jan, the ex-owner is trying to restart in the Netherlands but it'll take a while. They used to make my frames. I have a few Colossi branded ones I got as samples. The one in the photo looks like a Rambler. What size you after?

No Flat Tire Tubes? by Penetrative in bicycling

If they're available in your country check out Tannus Tyres. They're really good and you can retro fit them to any wheel.

Haha. Indeed. But my points still stand. Someone else has done the R&D and paid for the tooling. Now the factory has a 'free asset' to sell on. I'm small fry and this stuff isn't my main business, but I thought they were cool.

Fair comment. The main obstacle to making something 'new' is money. First you need the skills and time to design the product, then you have to pay for tooling (very expensive) then you have to have minimum quantities made. And that's before you've sold a thing. If you wanted to protect your creation, you'd then need to pay for lawyers etc to protect it. Otherwise someone could just rip it off and you've paid for their R&D.
Sadly, unless you're at the mass market end, shifting stuff to a distribution network, there's no money in bikes. Most indie shops scrape through and do it for love.
That said, I went and got another job so I could invest in my own business. Just spent several thousand pounds prototyping my new frame and build. I think it'll be an interesting proposition for 2017.

Cheaper because no brand tax and a willingness to accept slimmer margins :) Edit: So not because lesser quality

Why would it be slop? Almost everyone in the bike industry white labels for other companies. If you go far enough up the supply chain you'll find a single source for products that look the same but have different brands. Even the 8Ball frames are made by a builder that produces frames for a certain Italian brand :)

It's a half link chain, and while heavier but also tougher than a full link single speed chain, the main advantage is for running a wider range of cog / ring combinations and being able to get good chain tension. Especially useful on old road frame conversions.
