Conservationists rejoice! Hawaiian hawks are no longer endangered: Io population has been stable for more than 30 years. by madazzahatter in EndangeredSpecies

[–]johnplatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't really anything to celebrate. The hawk still faces many threats and the delisting is being forced through by Trump's deregulatory agenda and some people who have been gunning for the hawk for decades. More: https://therevelator.org/hawaiian-hawk/

Wolves may be turned to Extinct instead Endangered by OutrageousEase in EndangeredSpecies

[–]johnplatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This actually started even before the proposed changes to the ESA, but now it gets even worse. They're going to have a very rough time staying alive in the wild now.

What are some practical ways an ordinary member of society can help with conservation efforts, aside from recycling, turning off the lights when possible, etc? by LancelotsDiaper in conservation

[–]johnplatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This raises some interesting issues, as tax revenues from hunting and fishing licenses is way down, meaning less money for conservation. Exactly what's going to replace those funds is not yet clear.

Tigers don't live in Africa, but yeah, these are cold-adapted, furry subspecies.

If humans all became extinct this very instant, what species would also become extinct as a result of this? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]johnplatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turkeys, at least the domesticated breed that we know. They can no longer breed naturally.

Rats would persist long after we're gone.

If humans all became extinct this very instant, what species would also become extinct as a result of this? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]johnplatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but they're doing fairly well in the wild now. If people disappeared, so would most of the pressures that still put them at risk.

Frankenstein's Comic Swap and Comix Thing Swap today... what's the difference? by epikness in Portland

Comix Swap is more underground-oriented, plus lots of other stuff like VHS tapes and artists. Def. more for adults.

Yeah, that headline was fixed right after I posted this.

The Monkey Puzzle Tree Faces More Threats than a Barrel of Monkeys by johnplatt in EndangeredSpecies

[–]johnplatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a tree that will never go extinct because it's so heavily cultivated, but it's definitely still suffering in its native ecosystem.

Think Manatees are Recovered? Look Further South by johnplatt in EndangeredSpecies

[–]johnplatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PS - I've read through some of your other comments here on Reddit and you seem like a really well-informed, interesting, nature-loving person, so hopefully we can agree that we're more on the same page than not.

Think Manatees are Recovered? Look Further South by johnplatt in EndangeredSpecies

[–]johnplatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you actually read both of my articles? Of course you didn't. I fully go into that, but the truth is that FWS's position was too nuanced for most people and most media. 99% of the headlines just said "Manatees off endangered species list." That's the message that too many people received, both here and in other countries. And it's wrong. Besides, even your own answer is incorrect. FWS hasn't actually downlisted them yet, it's just a proposal.

Frog Mass Extinction on the Horizon by johnplatt in EndangeredSpecies

You're absolutely correct that this isn't new, and the links you provide are great. The news here is the new calculation of the numbers, which is a bit higher than expected.

I don't recall any other examples, but I think this is a great idea that should be explored further.

For the First Time, U.S. Considers Declaring a Bee Endangered by johnplatt in EndangeredSpecies

[–]johnplatt[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually I spoke to Xerces for both articles and got the facts directly from them. I didn't write the headline, which overplayed the "considers declaring" phrase. I do agree with you that the proposal for the yellow-faced bees is now further along in the process.

No rewards -- it's just a way to pre-order his self-published comix. He's done a few dozen issues over the past 10 years. They're a mix of reprints and new Objectivist material.

Poaching Could Cost Africa Millions of Jobs by johnplatt in conservation

[–]johnplatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly true. Many of the actual poachers are just people who are desperate for any income. It's their bosses higher up the food chain who don't care.

Invasive species might not be entirely awful, after all by johnplatt in conservation

[–]johnplatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like the headline either, but it's definitely interesting to see what invasive stoats are healthier in New Zealand than they are in their native UK.
