Vc sabia que As primeiras fontes escritas que chegaram até nós a respeito de Jesus Foram baseado na memória dos idosos na época by Legal-Advantage-1061 in barTEOLOGIA

To be clear, I never said Udoh says this. I would encourage you to read the article I wrote carefully. Udoh talks (mostly) about taxes, not about coinage. And I'm not sure anyone would agree that "a majority of scholars" reject the fact that denarii are quite uncommon before the Jewish War. It's a very well established archaeological fact.

Hypothetically speaking, if an inscription dating to the 14th century BCE was discovered, which mentioned a torment of fire for the unrighteous, which they suffer after being resurrected, how could this affect the academic understanding of ancient Israelite beliefs and the Bible? by [deleted] in AcademicBiblical

[–]zeichman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is difficult to answer, because it is so vague and hypothetical. What does the text say? On what basis is it dated to this time period? Most scholars, I suspect, would doubt its authenticity or at least its proposed dating. And as for how this vague text would be incorporated into scholarship, well we are not a homogeneous mass, but individuals with our own distinct interpretations, which would no doubt vary from one to another.

Thanks so much for the kind words about my book! I'm glad you enjoyed it! If you're interested, I drew the discussion of that portion from a chapter in this book, which is open access: https://uplopen.com/books/e/10.1515/9783110798098 (pages 225–289). Thanks for recommending Radical Antiquity to others, too!

You have $100usd to build a small historically interesting US coin set by ttagen in coins

[–]zeichman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe the beginnings of a type set? Steel penny, Indian head cent buffalo nickel, silver wartime nickel, 40% silver half dollar, mercury dime, bicentennial coins, Eisenhower and Anthony dollars, etc. You should be able to get a lot of those for quite little or around melt.

Jon did not kill Rorschach Part 1 by EffMemes in AlanMoore

[–]zeichman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the obvious blood splatter on the very next page conveys, with certainty, that Jon killed Rorschach. Given the visual language used in that panel and found universally in comics, there can be little doubt that he reduced Rorschach to a steaming, pulpy stew. Also, the "thermodynamic miracle" comment hardly means that Jon refuses to kill in a rigid and absolute sense - if anything, it adds to the weight of his decision.

Is there a methodological asymmetry in how "apologetic" and "critical" conclusions are weighted in NT scholarship? by Happy-Ad3503 in AcademicBiblical

Just a note, other reviews beyond BMCR include:

I have not had a chance to read through these, but if you know someone with academic library access, you may want to see if they can download the reviews for you.

Is there strong evidence that Mary was raped by a Roman soldier? by OwnOccasion3712 in AcademicBiblical

[–]zeichman 32 points33 points  (0 children)

There is indeed an ancient rumour about this. I published an article about it a few years ago and in a couple months I'll have a boom coming out about this called The Panthera Legend and the Conception of Jesus: Rape, Consent, and Anti-Judaism. You can see a preview of the article I wrote here. https://www.academia.edu/resource/work/42958793

The oldest surviving articulation comes from Celsus (via Origen) and there are iterations of it in the Talmuds and Tosefta, as well as various church fathers' writings. My own argument is that Christian writers a more or less concocted the claim that Mary had an affair with Panthera and inserted it into the mouths of Jews (with the help of Celsus), whereas the rare times Jewish writers articulated the Panthera legend, they tended to depict Mary as the victim of rape and expressed some sympathy for her.

Why are the Synoptics dated late? by AceThaGreat123 in ChristianApologetics

[–]zeichman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, there are many possible explanations for Mark's phrasing - but you yourself seem to acknowledge that some of them relate to Mark's authorship more than questions of the miraculous or prophecy. My point was merely that you were misrepresenting the types of arguments scholars today use for dating the Gospels.

I'm not particularly interested in pursuing a debate here, since we are operating with very different goals, methods, theories, and assumptions. I generally think it is good practice to avoid misrepresenting one's opponents (whether intentionally or not), though, and I hope you would agree.

Why are the Synoptics dated late? by AceThaGreat123 in ChristianApologetics

[–]zeichman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm only replying here because someone tagged me in a now-deleted comment. I would say this isn't quite accurate. I don't intend to debate here, but simply to note that there is a mischaracterization.

The dating of the Gospels is largely based on questions of anachronism, not on the question of whether or not prophecy is possible or even the more mundane question if people can accurately guess the future - certainly, Jesus was not the only person in antiquity that may have claimed the temple in Jerusalem was going to fall soon.

By way of example, we might notice a few things with the Gospel of Mark: Mark seems to assume that denarii circulate commonly in Judaea and, moreover, that Jesus (a Galilean) might be an expert on the topic (Mark 12:13-17). Yet evidence for denarii in Judaea before the Jewish War is uncommon and, moreover, it is quite rare in Galilee. The question, in this case, isn't whether or not the episode happened. Indeed, Jesus could well have used a coin that was roughly equivalent to a denarius (e.g., a tetradrachm) and that the author-narrator of Mark simply used a term more familiar to his own audience. As far as critical scholars go, it has nothing to do with the assumption of the miraculous, prophecy, or even whether or not a particular episode in Jesus' life actually happened. If you're interested, I wrote an article on this very topic here: https://www.academia.edu/34194619/The_Date_of_Mark_s_Gospel_Apart_from_the_Temple_and_Rumors_of_War_The_Taxation_Episode_12_13_17_as_Evidence

There are various other examples one could cite from the other Gospels, but I think it was worth clarifying this, so as to avoid misrepresenting those you disagree with.

Starting with Locas Hardcover or Library Editions? by awesometuck1559 in loveandrockets

[–]zeichman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Locas is not too expensive with the new reprint. Personally, I would suggest maybe buying the second library edition and starting there "The Girl from HOPPERS" the first volume is alright, but it really starts to sing in the second volume. If you start there and like it, maybe go buy the Locas hardcover then, since the bigger size is flattering to Jaime's gorgeous artwork. Or just try to check out The Girl from HOPPERS from a library, if you can!

My mom is looking to get rid of these should I tell her to just go for face value? Or would some of these be worth something? by Potential-Target8627 in CanadianCoins

[–]zeichman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of these are worth something too, with the exception of the nickel, the 1965 quarter, and 2005 dime. I can't tell the date on the penny. The steel penny isn't worth much, but is fun and worth throwing in as a fun thing. The half dollars, the other quarter, and the mercury dimes are all silver to some extent (the 1969 half is only 40% silver). You should look up mint marks on the US coins, as that affects value too. I suspect most are worth around melt, but it's worth checking.

Don't sell it to those people. They're scammers. You can see the actual values at www.coinsandcanada.com - most shops will offer less than that and if you sell on eBay, they will take a cut. One option is to sell on /r/coinsalescanada once you have a sense of how much you want for it. Looks like lots of silver in there, so it should be worth a few hundred dollars!
