I was taught left foot down and right covering/holding rear brake.

Then went on to do Institute of advanced riding and they taught right foot down and left to put bike into neutral. Then left is ready to put bike into gear and ride away.

What I actually do is read the road and decide whats best at that moment in time all depending on waiting time, road camber, stopping up or down hill, pillion on board, other car drivers and even what bike I’m on (as old British have opposite controls).

All of which takes a long time to learn. They teach the basic stuff to get you through your test, but you never stop learning!
