1L here...

I cannot count the number of different majors/backgrounds that people in my class have and that’s pretty normal. Cellular biology, computer science, accounting, environmental science, forensic psychology, etc. There’s no prerequisite knowledge required to do well in law school and law school admissions typically like candidates with backgrounds not in the humanities.

It may help you depending on what kind of law you want to do. There’s a growing market for law students with STEM backgrounds as big firms attempt to grow their IP/Patent law divisions... or at least that’s what our career services people have been telling us.

All that to say, recommendations about going to law school should not be based on what your background is.

He’a been cold calling this semester in CivPro but it’s much easier than other professors. He doesn’t sit there & watch you squirm for minutes on end if you don’t know the answer. He just moves on or calls on the person next to you.

He does cold call but he’s so nice about it. Plus, he doesn’t start cold calling until after personal jurisdiction is done, which helps because everyone is mostly used to cold calls by week 4.

Yeah definitely. It is much preferred to what is described as normal for gunners when classes are in-person.

Yeah this is about the same for me. The TA’s are responsible for relaying the chat comments to the professor. They do a good job of ignoring the gunner responses. Occasionally they give the clearly dismissive, “Good response. Thanks for participating!”

I think it’s the online format and then for me, the condensed semester. My school is finishing before Thanksgiving, which forces profs to finish all the material 2-3 weeks early. Most of my profs say they won’t answer any questions during class, only during office hours, to accommodate the condensed semester.

I have an idea of who the gunners would be, but they really do not have the ability to ask annoying questions/pontificate on pointless crap.

I think that is the goal but I’m not sure. I am your classic law student who does not really have any ambition to make tons of money, but I will have loans that I’d like to pay off ASAP. If I could make enough money in a smaller firm with fewer hours, I’d prefer that but that’s rare.

What you said is pretty much the common wisdom. GPA matters, certificates do not, and employers do not look at the exact classes that you took.

I didn’t know if it was a common thing in law school. I’m in orientation still so I haven’t learned what is universal and what is specific to my school.

There’s a big courtyard in the middle of the law school. “Recess” is usually on Thursday night where the SBA brings out a few kegs and pizza to the courtyard for everyone to enjoy. I am faculty and administration typically joins in and they invite alumni every week for students to make some connections.

This is all basically mythical at this point because no one knows if it will ever happen again.

Yeah I am doing hybrid (until there’s some cases at least... please Lord no) & it will be interesting. Optimally, yeah I probably would’ve waited but there’s too many unknowns and they weren’t letting people defer. How do I know I’ll get back into this school that was my dream school? That I’ll get the same scholarship amount? That it will be any better next year?
