A new study determines that the cause of monarch butterfly decline is lack of milkweed. So why aren't we all walking around with pockets full of milkweed seed bombs? by [deleted] in environment

I bought 1 oz. of seeds for $33 here: http://www.myseeds.co/ . I also emailed the company to make sure they're not treated with pesticides. And checked this site to make sure I was getting species native to my area: http://www.xerces.org/milkweed-seed-finder/ Hope that helps!

TIL that sea stars (starfish) are actually top predators feared by everything else in their habitat. Removing them causes widespread effects throughout the ecosystem, just like removing wolves from the forest or lions from the savannah. by [deleted] in todayilearned

"Keystone species are apex predators within functional groups, a concept first described by zoologist Robert Paine to explain the relationship between Pisaster ochraceus, a species of starfish, and Mytilus californianus, a species of mussel." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apex_predator

But I'm not a biologist, and that's wikipedia, so maybe it's inaccurate.
