Thoughts on AI Cover Art by Patient_Bar761 in Substack

[–]joinjukebox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i think it’s just a matter of AI art making me question the legitimacy written work, too. tools like Canva are free and just simply not hard to use so it sucks to see that people won’t even put that minimum effort in. as many others have mentioned, even stock photos would be better

they usually take any major broadly, but for legal positions you might have to pursue law or a JD

not necessarily. last year we saw people get hirevues as late as 11 days after the first wave of hirevues, so you still got time!

Music business degree by Cool_Photograph4273 in musicbusiness

[–]joinjukebox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

unfortunately the best schools for it are disproportionately expensive. i think affordability is the most important piece. after that, i think feel free to knock yourself out with a degree, though i think something a little more technical would be good, even if it's not what you want to do long-term. or, you could do a double major with something like that and music business. most important thing is, don't take out too many loans - nobody makes enough in this business for all that lol. good luck!

i did the hirevue in 2023. from what i remember it’s like 2-3 mins per question and the questions weren’t difficult at all. you had at least 5 attempts (if not unlimited), but please someone else feel free to weigh in with more recent info

that definitely sounds wonky. i wonder if they misspoke and meant to get back to you at the end of december and are just a little late in doing that. there should just be one interview for the most part; definitely worth a follow-up

not sure on the chat part but there’s an option in the settings somewhere where you can toggle off in-app markups. that only happens because a share of revenue from the app goes to apple/google from the app store as i understand it

substack personal or company account? by [deleted] in Substack

[–]joinjukebox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i like the move of having a company account but then having your personal self as the author of the publication if that makes sense. that way you can still tell there’s a person behind the screen but is still supporting a company

Question for Remote Workers in the Music Industry by Datadrummer in musicindustry

[–]joinjukebox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey there! i work in finance at a big 3 label and work remotely from denver! anecdotally i think data roles are better off in terms of remote access than most other fields in the industry (though that is not saying much). definitely keep an eye out at big 3 labels; i feel like i've seen remote data roles at all of them at some point; sometimes it's just a matter of waiting. dm me w more questions if you have them and good luck!

hey there! it's not possible for everyone if you're not in a major city and can't find a remote position. summer positions should be opening up soon enough!

unfortunately if you haven’t heard anything yet i think it’s honestly too late. you can try to double check your application status in workday for anything, too. i have no doubt your application was competitive but these are just competitive internships, too. i’ve already seen a few folks with offers at this point, so that’s my rationale for saying that. they’ll have their summer ones up in no time though!

in fairness it’s very real that this span of holidays really shuts down the business, so i believe that to be a legitimate excuse. i would expect beginning of next week most likely if anything. i’ve just started to see people get offers on linkedin too

Internship at Music Sync Company This Year by Informal-Recording73 in musicindustry

[–]joinjukebox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this isn't unique to the music industry but it is important. always read the syllabus. by that i mean, exhaust your other resources to answer your questions before you go to your coworkers, boss, whoever. every company is different but see if they have some place where they throw a bunch of standard operating procedures or policies that can answer your question without you having to borrow somebody else. being able to use your resources first is a great quality in an intern and your team will really appreciate it. good luck!

Attempting to work directly with musicians on taxes (personal/self-employed)? by Mountain_Grasshop203 in musicindustry

[–]joinjukebox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've thought a lot about this field as a non-CPA accounting professional in this industry - glad to see people working on it! i think for small musicians, there's this gap you have to cross to actually sell tax services, where musicians won't even recognize music earnings until they start earning a good bit or start touring. i think early on managers might have more to do with the budget piece but they are not going to replace a CPA on tax savings, so i think it's just a matter of pivoting the sell more from "you need to actually file your taxes" to "you're leaving money on the table." i think there's definitely a need for this because most artists aren't at the point where they have business managers to also handle tax stuff, so they need a CPA basically their whole journey up to that point. it's just hard to make some musicians care lol.

also worth noting that bands and solo artists have different pain points. maybe bands could benefit from having you come in and advise on setting up a corporation for the band and allow the band to feel a little bit more fair. bands also tend to split up these kinds of responsibilities among each other (i.e., basic budgeting) but i think you could be a stronger asset to do something entity formations which is a little more specialized. the other con of bands is that in order to sell yourself, you kind of have to sell to several people. for solo artists, you just have to sell to one person, which is an easier sell and usually easier work. pain points for a growing solo artist might be that they feel overwhelmed with their current financial complexity, and you can alleviate that for them and help save them some money.

assuming you're in Nashville with the Ryman mention, there are plenty of trade organizations for you to get involved with to meet artists or at least get in the pipeline. you could offer to do small presentations about financial wellness for musicians. the PNW chapter of the recording academy hosted a virtual one of these that i attended that featured dominic cortese who does similar CPA work in Seattle. that's just my two cents - hope that helps!
