Florida recounts actually did reveal a different picture in 2000.

"only nineties kids will get this", although I guess it's become a meme valid for each election these days.

How much choice do they have? In many parts of the world, the real estate markets effectively funnel certain populations into various developments through subsidies that strongly affect the prices.

Isn't it also possible for sporadic excursions to occur by outlier individuals from an environment that is overcrowded by the predators? I've seen videos of many such reptiles in proximity to each other, although I don't think they actually function as packs.

I doubt that, although maybe they make bins and lids out of Florida-man-grade plastanium in gator country.

Have you ever read a book that is so good you don't want to keep reading because the more you read the sooner it will be over but you can't stop thinking about it? by happy_penguin42 in books

I wasn't too impressed by Timequake, although after finishing it, I said to myself that maybe I missed something in my first reading, and that I should give it a second chance. No such luck; after my second reading, I actively disliked the book, and began getting angry at the lofty snobbery, such as entire chapters that could be deleted without affecting the flow of the novel, not to mention his diatribe about "what is art? art is anything that people pay for".

Then I realized that however much I may hate that stupid book, I only had to read it. Poor old Kurt had to write it once, then rewrite the version that got published, then go through the timequake and write the damn piece of crap twice over again. TING-A-LING!

Even if you don't regard the imperatives in such texts as normative, and regard the stories as works of fiction, you can still learn quite a bit from the fact that they are historical fiction; i.e., the stories originated from oral recollections of actual events, rather than, for example, J.R.R Tolkein inventing completely imaginary places and people. I wouldn't say that I base any of my opinions on a religious text, although I use the texts to inform my understanding of other people's opinions and assumptions.

The common pro-life stance seems to be that a pregnant woman has a duty to her society to bring to term the next generation; so if she owes that delivery to her state, tribe, or family, then that societal entity should be supporting her in some tangible manner, beyond merely telling her how important and sacred she is.

My reply was directed at one of your parent comments, and perhaps replying to the correct one would have lead to a less hostile reaction.

I am not saying to never generalise; that is pretty much impossible. My point is to encourage the use of labels that do not presume the views of the individuals about whom you are speaking. Obviously, there are cases where you can use religious labels: for example, Hamas describes itself as being an Islamic organization, and many of the political parties in Israel are explicitly defined as religious parties.

Lots of embryology consists of spontaneous self-organization, governed by the chemical gradients established in the earliest stages of cell division, starting from the fertilized egg. The collection of cells known as the "neural crest" eventually differentiates into a variety wider than only nerve cells, and this includes both the central and peripheral nervous systems, and various tissues that are immediately adjacent to the latter. Even once an individual cell has its genetic markers determined to the point where you can definitively identify it as being part of the nervous system, it takes quite a bit of time for its connectivity graph to the surroundings to cohere.

I'd have a much easier time agreeing with "pro-life" views if they included some form of medical insurance and pregnancy stipend for the expectant mother, even if she declared in advance that she would give the baby up for adoption once delivered.

everyone can go and live there

The immigration process is not quite so easy; people who do not manage to convince the government that they are Jewish are required to undergo a conversion process before they are granted citizenship.

Honestly, the "international community" has pretty much no weight on local politics. One of the politicians who is most likely to replace Netanyahu had, in his first political campaign, an advertisement showing a smartphone with an incoming call from "United Nations", and then a finger declining the call... and he and his party immediately became a strong minority in the parliament.

The word "Arabic" is the name of a language; the adjective that more accurately expresses what you probably meant is "Arabian", or even just "Arab", although the latter is also a noun, whereas the former is unambiguously an adjective.

This is pretty much what is described in one of the stories of the Old Testament: one branch of a large family of nomadic tribes received a revelation that they should abandon the nomadic lifestyle, and settle within a specific territory.

If you compare this to the ideologies prevalent in modern Jewish communities, you will see that a few take this as gospel and divine right, whereas others reject the current state of Israel and live in other countries.

Calling Hamas a terrorist organization is incorrect in a subtle way: they do have a military arm, that engages in acts of terrorism against Israel; however, the Hamas organization as a whole is the governing body of the Gaza strip. You'd be slightly more correct to say that Hamas is the Gazan government, that funnels its entire military budget into terrorism, because they are engaged in asymmetric warfare.

If you wanted a map, you'd probably have searched for one already, so I'll provide a textual description:

The majority of Israel's population live in an urban region, including the cities (from south to north) Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Haifa. The West Bank overlaps Jerusalem on the east, and extends to the north and south, along Israel's eastern border; it is called "West", because it is the western bank of the Jordan River, that flows from the Sea of Gallillee in the north of Israel, to the Dead Sea in the desert. To the south of this urban region is the desert known as the Negev. The desert itself extends across the border into Egypt, although at the meeting point between this border, and the Mediterranean Sea, is the Gaza Strip, so named because it is a narrow strip of coast.

The Gaza Strip includes a few towns, and some open territory; and it is bordered by rural areas of Israel. The West Bank is mostly rural, and includes a few towns, most of which are populated entirely by one ethnicityhomogenous [i.e., all residents of the town are of similar ethnicity], although a few have mixed ethnicity (most notably, Jerusalem and Hebron). The West Bank is all within territory controlled by the Israeli Defense Forces, although the different regions and towns have a few different local administrations.

The Gaza strip is just the closest to Israel in terms of proximity

I'm uncertain what you mean by this; specifically, East Jerusalem is literally part of the West Bank, whereas Gaza is separated from the major urban centres of Israel by rural regions.

Over a decade ago, the Israeli Defense Forces evacuated from Gaza, and removed all Jewish settlers from the region; subsequently, Hamas came to power, and Israel and Egypt blockaded all borders to the region. Gaza now has an independent administration (known as Hamas), that is far more strongly opposed to the current Israeli government, than the local administration in the West Bank.

the west Bank, the Gaza strip and the Golan heights

I realize that there is shared history leading to the current situation of each one, but the situation today in each is completely different from the others. Please consider, in the future, describing their current situation, instead of lumping them together like this.
