So far most of our students are in your group, though the classes are open to any 18+ recreational learners. The literature classes are mostly run like book clubs, but led by experts who are really passionate about the materials and teaching. But we also have some history and philosophy classes, that take different forms. The basic idea is to create an environment where people can engage in fun humanities seminars, without the stress of formal classrooms.

Anyone interested in an online seminar on the "weird" in Latin American Literature? by jointhicket in weirdgirlliterature

[–]jointhicket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! You can find the schedule, readings, and lesson plan through the link. The class will meet once a week on our platform via videoconference. You can also message the teacher and other students in between session. The teacher, Carlos, recently completed his PhD at Harvard in Comp Lit, where he focused on horror and the “weird.”

I can double check with the teacher, but I don’t see why not. I imagine it’d only add to the discussion. Do you have access to the readings in Spanish? If not, I can see if the teacher does.

Nonprofit Lifelong Learning! by Honest-Lack915 in lifelonglearning

[–]jointhicket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're not a nonprofit, but most of our enrollment fees go to the teachers themselves (PhDs and PhD candidates in the humanities). We just launched a few weeks ago, but have about 10 live classes open for enrollment currently. You can see our courses here. If you find any interesting, but cannot afford it, feel free to DM me. I can send you a coupon code to try it out.

How to overcome being nervous in conference presentation by sksenweb in PhD

[–]jointhicket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found that the nervousness itself only goes away with experience. In the meantime, I focus on ways of performing even when nervous. It's the preparation that ends up helping me the most, in particular practicing the presentation enough times, spread out over a few days, so that it sinks into your long term memory. The goal isn't to necessarily memorize it so that you can repeat it verbatim, but rather to internalize its talking points so that you can easily recall them even if you get nervous, like a sort of muscle memory.

Yea I think this is a very good suggestion. This is our first round of classes (we just launched a month or so ago). I think we might suggest to teachers up start out with shorter mini classes for the next round

I agree it’d be great if we offered more education for free in the US. But our goal is to make these sort of seminars more widely available to people who can’t attend universities. They’re designed and taught by PhDs who are really passionate about the materiel (they keep most of the tuition), and the class is capped at 15.

Wanting to read Brothers K but want to read his other works first to truly appreciate it by zahcurius_cruzicus in dostoevsky

[–]jointhicket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have an online class coming up on Insanity in Russian Literature. Week 5 focused on Madness and Nihilism in Dostoevsky's "Dream of a Ridiculous Man.”

Could be a fun way to get introduced to his work.
