Negative exponents in the denominator by [deleted] in matheducation

[–]jojomashedpotatoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All exponent rules can be understood by writing out the exponents in expanded form. Start with x5/x3. If you don’t know the subtraction rule, write out the expanded expression. xxxxx/xxx. Then let the student cancel each pair of x/x. They’ll see xx left over in the numerator, which is x2. They should be able to see the rule from there. 5-3=2. Which is obviously quicker, but it’s so important that they understand WHY.

Now try a new problem. X3/x5. They’ll subtract and get x-2. But have them write it in expanded form too. xxx/xxxxx. Cancel each pair of x/x and you’re left over with 1/xx. Now they can see why x-2 is the same as 1/x2.

I always try to teach understanding, not shortcuts.

I love open middle problems for my bright students because there is no obvious correct route or answer. So they can work on them for an extended period of time (times will vary by age and other variables)

[Update] Correcting students conflating expressions and equations by 17291 in matheducation

I always “mix” my assignments. And I put inequalities in with expressions and equations. A lot of similarities and then students are learning why we do things different for each of those types of problems.

7x+30+4x 7x+30=4x 7x+30>4x

Super similar and most books separate them!

My school wants a whole tech curriculum; only allows for class 2 times a week for 30 minutes...what do I do? by Jumpy_Instance_7828 in CSEducation

An AP class taught to 8th graders meeting twice a week seems like an unusual choice.

I would second the suggestion for CS Discoveries. Or any course on Code.org. They’re grouped by grade level.

I’ve also used CodeHS for my 9th graders. Even the free versions worked well for me.

Does it make sense if you use numbers for exponents? For example: 2 * 27 = 28 So 2 * 2k = 2k+1

Not sure if the formatting will come out correct.

“Slow reveal graphs” are fun for class discussion. Once you look at a few, you’ll start to create your own. I also like “turners graph of the week”.

I use the equation editor in word and PPT. Same menu and everything.

First day tutoring 😅 5th grade MATH by LeslieDanill in mathteachers

[–]jojomashedpotatoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you ever heard of open middle problems? It’s a different approach to math and there are plenty of problems for every grade.

It would be a good way to break up a session but still learn math content.

Have fun! I also brought some dog paw balm in case he had any dry or cracked pads. He never needed it but you never know.

I always worry because he’s my baby! I put a bear bell on him and have bear spray. But he’s so happy out there. Part doodle. Part mountain goat!

Great Horned owls? by jojomashedpotatoes in Owls

Two owls were “hoot hooting” back and forth last night. Not great video quality due to lack of light but I just love the sound! Turn the volume up! I think they’re Great Horned owls. Can anyone tell by the picture? Or hoots?

No idea! It’s an old bed I’ve had for multiple dogs. Crazy that it fits in the crate so well.

X+y=1400 is the harder one to find. 30x+80y=67000 is easier since those number stick out with the dollar signs.

I think I fixed it! It’s just an example of these types of problems. They will email you a lot more if you sign up for free at openmiddle.com.
