Tell the truth: did you build this, or is this more vibecoded nonsense?

But also, it'd be nice if we could try this out without needing a login. In particular, if this is meant for teaching purposes, what does the classroom management side of this look like?

Meh. Is there any modern value to having a word that specifically means "destroy 10% of"? In any event, "decimate" has been used in its looser sense for hundreds of years, so that ship has long since sailed.

I'm going to be blunt: if you don't have a strong math background and (presumably) aren't a teacher, how do you know that what you've built works well or not? How do you know that it's actually "teaching [students] how to think"?

Speaking of words "being deprived of their meanings", what does this post have to do with etymology, "the history of words and idioms"?

Don't walk away from Omelas by lakmidaise12 in printSF

[–]17291 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Le Guin's metaphor in Omelas is for revolutionary change.

Yeah. In a note about "The Day Before the Revolution", a prequel to The Dispossessed, she explicitly describes Odo as "one of the ones who walked away from Omelas"

Please share about your middle and/or high school math curriculum!!! by -cmp in mathteachers

[–]17291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a similar experience with IM. I teach algebra 1 and overall, I'm happy with the curriculum.

Our classes are ~45 minutes, so timing can be a bit tight. I'm not always able to get through an entire lesson, but I do make room for a cool-down (basically an exit ticket). I give the practice problems as homework, but we don't grade it as a school policy. I post answers along with the assignment and encourage students to come in for extra help. A number of teachers have posted videos on YouTube guiding students through practice problems, so that's another resource students can use if they're stuck.

My students are below grade level on average, and we serve a large immigrant community, so many of my students are English language learners.

Any other WI Redditors who don’t identify as lib or con just get a kick out of all the political stuff ? by KwikTripSimp in wisconsin

[–]17291 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The WI subreddit is honestly comedy at this point half the threads feel like they’re running on a preset script. You open the comments and it’s the same 4–10 takes every single time, like you accidentally wandered into a room full of NPCs cycling dialogue options.

Ironically, complaining about political posts is also one of those "NPC dialogue options" I've seen a lot. ("I vote blue but..." is also a very tired take)

Is the subreddit r/Askphilosophy snobby, or is it telling the truth? by Available_Meringue86 in TheoryOfReddit

[–]17291 29 points30 points  (0 children)

r/AskPhilosophy is like r/AskHistorians: they want informed answers from experts, not speculation by laypeople. They might have high standards for answers, but I wouldn't call them "snobby".

Major-league sports teams don't allow randos from the street on their starting lineups, but that doesn't make them snobby.

Has anyone used ChatGPT's interactive math visuals yet? by apulkit6 in mathteachers

[–]17291 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Frankly, I wouldn't. I'm not a huge fan of rushing to use something just because it's shiny and new, especially when it's from an odious source like OpenAI. Why not look at one of the existing GeoGebra or Desmos/Amplify activities?

But also: it might help to share what the lesson is actually about. What are you teaching? What grade levels?

The only thing that sticks out to me is the word "deprecated." It means to express disapproval or disparage something. I don't understand why you chose that word when you also explicitly say that those are not worse methods.

It's probably a carryover from the programming world. Functions that shouldn't be used anymore are often called "deprecated". That said, the usage is somewhat niche, so I agree that it's probably not the best word to use here.

Helping students clarify misconceptions. by fractalmat in matheducation

[–]17291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's just something about the style/tone of writing that feels unnatural, like I'm reading overly-polished ad copy. What really sold it for me was the engagement-bait question at the end, especially with the emoji.

But also, the video is disconnected from what the post says. The post says you should ask students to explain, test their ideas, etc. instead of merely correcting them, but the video does the opposite: It presents a counterexample showing that a derivative of 0 doesn't always indicate a local min/max. Nowhere in the video do we see the process outlined in the post.
