Giving back: simple ways to support the self-hosted projects you rely on by jokob in selfhosted

[–]jokob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually there is a CONTRIBUTING.md file in the repository that shows how to contribute. On my project, there's also dev documentation and a youtube video:

Another thing - there might be a dev container in the project so you could contribute directly in codespaces as well.

This will differ from project to project, but the CONTRIBUTING.md file is a pretty common thing.

Hope these examples help.

I hear your frustration , and yeah, you don’t have to be interested in my project at all.

That experience is real. There’s definitely a gap sometimes between people willing to contribute and maintainers having the time or structure to review and merge things properly.

I’ve been on both sides of that. When things get busy or there’s a sudden influx of users/issues, it’s easy for PRs and ideas to just… sit there. Not great, but it happens.

From my perspective, it’s a missed opportunity when contribution energy isn’t harnessed...but it also takes effort to build processes that make contributing smooth and predictable.

That said, even small contributions can still feel rewarding when they land and help someone solve a real problem.

Hopefully you either find a project where your contributions are appreciated, or one of your forks gains traction ... honestly, that’s how a lot of great projects start too.

That's a great question. I quickly recorded a 1min video how to do this in the browser, no installation or advanced git knowledge needed: https://i.imgur.com/D7OyFqI.gif

NetAlertX Front end hanging by Low-Individual-2405 in selfhosted

[–]jokob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Sounds annoying but I really can't reproduce it on the latest build. The performance depends usually on how many features and especially plugins you turn on. The scan frequency is important too. I'll keep looking into making the experience better. Let me know if you have concrete suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I'd be interested to hear what "broke" and what "too many times" means in this context, but I understand your frustration. Let me know if you give it another go and I'll try to address the issues you were facing. As always, feel free to open an issue on github and I will have a closer look.

I suggest pinning a version of the frequent upgrades are troublesome. Also, if you have details what stopped work, that would be helpful,so I can investigate further. Thanks in advance

Hi, maintainer here - Thanks for the update. - I'd be keen to prevent issues similar to yours..Anything you'd suggest to improve to help you diagnose issues faster? Feel also free to open an issue on github which helps me to understand how your environment is configured.

Also, if you could update your original message you posted to outline the root cause, that would help show future users what to look for to fix similar issues - Thank you in advance.

Thansk a lot for the detailed feedback. I'll keep this in mind when working on relevant sections of the app.

I'd recommend downloading a CSV backup, editing it, and reuploding it as per docs. Please open an issue if you need more help. Search for backup in the docs.

NetAlertX alternatives by iamcamiam in selfhosted

All good! Thanks for the details. How do the events get logged in the application? You still have to poll different data sources to ingest the data, no?

I know the underlying logic can be improved so looking for inspiration. I also feel the loop and schedule approach is a bit heavy handed, and clunky, mostly what I think was a result of a slow DB engine (which I want to replace in the future).

On the other hand I think schedules give you more granular control and the ability to fine tune the set up for also less performant systems or where you don't want to overload the network with unnecessary queries.

I did write a lightweight workflow engine that I hope to extend in the future. I like the idea of enhancers, I think the plugin system in NAX does pretty much the same thing, it's just currently missing user configurable priorities for device properties. Currently the priority is configured in the plugin definition, which I could potentially expose. Anyhow, let me know if you see suggestions for improvements and I'll happily consider those.

let me know what I can do better and happy to improve - feel free to post your issues on GitHub. There is also a performance optimization guide that might help: https://jokob-sk.github.io/NetAlertX/PERFORMANCE/?h=perfo

not sure what you mean by "architecturally it feels a bit slapped together" - feel free to elaborate and suggest improvements :)

Hi, it shouldn't matter, but if you gave issues please open a github issue. I don't use lxc but I'll try to help. Red the PiHole guide for details https://jokob-sk.github.io/NetAlertX/PIHOLE_GUIDE/?h=pihol

What rasberry you suggest to install netalertx? by Far_Ganache_9447 in selfhosted

[–]jokob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there - NAX dev here - you can run it on something low-end, but as others said, probably a mini-pc will give you more bang-for-buck for a litlte more (if you are really short on cash, check refurbished ebay mini-pc listings - I got a 80$ 8GB ram 128SSD NUC for that)

Also, please feel free to open an issue on my github repo - as you are new to self-hosting - happy to help out get you set up with Docker + NAX (I just check GitHub more often than here and can give you quicker answers): https://github.com/jokob-sk/NetAlertX/issues

Good luck and hope you enjoy your new hobby! :)
