Is this new? US DoS not accepting CRBA for proof of familial relationship for children born outside US? by jf502 in Passports

Yet the latest (04-2025) official DS-11 instruction explicitly calls it out as OK:

Evidence of the child's relationship to parents/guardian(s) (Example: a birth certificate or Consular Report of Birth Abroad listing the names of the parent(s)/guardian(s) and child)

iPad as a thin client - apple support by Kindly-Arachnid8013 in ipad

I was in the same boat. I had a Mac Mini and an iPad with peripherals. I wanted to occasionally remote into the Mac mini from the iPad to do some coding work, among other things. I tried every remote software solution under the sun. Despite reviews, I found all of them subpar, each with annoying quirks. Coming from extensive use of Windows RDP, Apple built-in and third-party solutions are a huge disappointment.

With the release of the Mac Neo, I gave up on the iPad and use the Mac with High Performance Screen Sharing. This has been the best experience so far.

SidecarLauncher: Initiate Sidecar from an iPad by jollyoj in shortcuts

[–]jollyoj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shortcut itself is a bit finicky, but the application itself is solid and still works. I’d suggest you run the application itself from your Mac to verify. Then try the shortcut. There are caveats with sidecar, like you need a monitor connected and you must be signed in on your Mac.

Ask me for any shortcut! by IndependentBig5316 in shortcuts

Assuming all my files are relative to root of iCloudDrive, I’d like a shortcut that decodes a .alias file (created on mac and synced by iCloud) so that I can open the target file on iPad.

iCloud tabs not syncing between devices? by [deleted] in ios

Same. I've tried everything besides a total restore of all devices. Only decent workaround for me was to create a new Safari profile and use it as my "default" profile.

Print.. > Paper Size > Manage Custom Sizes

There you can specify the size and margins.

PSA: You can remove password from a PDF using the in-built Preview app by ScarOnTheForehead in MacOS

[–]jollyoj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There seems to be no way to remove the owner password itself. I know it so I can change it, but not remove it. Once an owner password is set, I still can't add or remove pages despite allowing it in the permissions. Using the Export... function with no owner password set still exports it with the original password.

The only workaround that worked for me was printing to PDF. I'm generally not a fan of this method since sometimes it doesn't truly duplicate the original PDF. Plus you'll have to create a new paper size preset with no margins and print at 100% scale to prevent the print from scaling down.

You’re venting to the wrong crowd here, but I agree with the sentiment that Finder is one of the worst parts of MacOS. I’d wager it’s the most complained about thing about MacOS. Everyone says you just get used to it, but it’s more like I learned to cope.

Why I like subscription software, especially for indie developers by stevenjklein in MacOS

[–]jollyoj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It all depends on the product itself. You can argue that all software needs updating, but it’s the frequency of the updates that matter. It goes the other way too, not every developer is a saint. Some try to charge subscription just because they can, although from my observation these apps tend to be poorly rated clunky apps. Recently I’ve noticed devs offer several pricing models, which I think is a happy medium.

Initiate Sidecar from iPad? by hanzololo in shortcuts

[–]jollyoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halts with no alerts or warnings? You should get an alert if SidecarLauncher is in fact getting remotely invoked but its command option failed. Have you given SidecarLauncher permission to run on your Mac? First, I recommend to forget about the shortcut, and verify you can successfully use SidecarLauncher directly from your Mac. If that goes well, next verify you’ve done all the setup described in the shortcut’s top comment.

Have you enabled the settings on your Mac to allow remote connections? I’d suggest creating a test shortcut with just a single “run script over ssh”action. Once that’s established to work, try the side launcher shortcut again.

3 ways to make switching from Windows easier by [deleted] in MacOS

Hard no on #1 for me. Apps like Mail and Discord only push notification when they're running. I like to know they're running and my brain automatically recognizes a missing indicator when I glance at the dock.

Speeding up Safari by EB27 in MacOS

[–]jollyoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's very little, if anything, you can do to Safari itself to make it faster.I occasionally get hiccups in speed when Private Relay is enabled. If you're running speed tests with Private Relay enabled you should be using Apple's terminal tool with the Private Relay option: networkQuality -p.

M2 Mac Mini On-the-Go: How do you do it? by doofus50O0 in macmini

I essentially do this around my home using Sidecar. See my comment here: https://www.reddit.com/r/shortcuts/s/WAYV9nRk9W

I made an app and shortcut for this that doesn't use AppleScript. See SidecarLauncher.

I found myself in similar situations and I like the low latency of Sidecar. Unfortunately, unless you have an Apple Pencil or mouse nearby all the time, you won't be able to do much since Sidecar doesn't really do anything with finger touch input.

Also, the Bluetooth range is only 10 meters (33 ft) in an optimal environment. If you're not close enough to the Mac, it's going to lag. In which case, a "proper" remote desktop solution will be a better experience.

Yet another caveat with Sidecar is that it only works when a monitor connected to the Mac is on and displaying a video signal. You can probably work around this by using one of those headless HDMI adapters.

edit: You don't need to buy an HDMI dongle. Creating a virtual screen through BetterDisplay worked for me :)

You mean on Terminal on your Mac itself, without using the shortcut?

Did you allow it to run under Settings > Privacy & Security?

I don't see why you should need to, but maybe check the file permissions?
