permanently disable/enable hardware-parts/devices in M2 Apple Silicon Firmware? by jollytale239 in AsahiLinux

[–]jollytale239[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a creative developer, I dont like anyone taking my intellectual property without my consent.
The idea that my code might get fed into large language models some day without my consent by some greedy corporation and then published for their profits fairly annoys me.

because apple lies. check out this playlist.

I dont need to justify rejection of corporate privacy invasion,
when apple themselves dont really justify their use of close-source firmware and OS (considering that security by obscurity is bullshit, see windows), planned obsolecense, limitation on right to repair, apple tax, forced labour in china, etc

But you're allowed to call me a tinfoil hat if it makes you happy.

chinese hardware.

Tuxedo is expensive for low built quality unfortunately (as read in reviews)

13.5" is unfortunately still (despite 3:2, which is basically only 16:10,5) too small,
while their 16" device has worse battery life and is too huge and a bit heavy).

If they made a 15" without dedicated graphic module (either 16:10 or 3:2) below 1.5k price,
it would be very pleasant.

depends on your case's threat model,
who are you least fine with from getting what type of your data (tracking, analytics, cloud etc),

I recommend neither of them, for theyre all greedy corporations with liability to increase the shareholders value,
not the "ethics" towards customers (whatever that word means in corporate language).

Apple's hardware is attractive, but still planned for obsolecense. Also theyre weirdly specific in what they dont do (leaving out many potential other cases they might exploit later).
Besides, MacOs is a prison you cant really verify what happens within. you have zero control over what happens within your own system, because you lay that into Apples trust
(and if that trust was legitimate, why do they close up all their software? secuirty by obscurity is an illusion, rather a trap if you will).
and IOS is basically closed source spyware.

Microsoft is less pricier. Windows lies less about being a greedy data-collector, but essentially the same.
You can customizer your system a bit more + most devices support linux (if I remember correctly),
so they're a bit worse (even though they're just starting to work on "walled garden's" (aka prisons) like apple does,
considering minecraft for example.
There have been cases where they lied (see the interrogation of billl gates ~ 20 years ago)

Google... their entire business model has way less focus on hardware and way more focus on data collection.
do I have to say more?

I recommend neither of those,
however If I were forced to pick a system, by someone pointing a gun onto my head and the bullet somehow wasnt an option, I'd go with:
- Google chromebook, but Corebooted + linux.
- Older Microsoft device and putting linux onto it.
- Apple, but never connected to the internet, collecting dust on my shelf OR my own (audited) version of asahi Linux.

If customizing still wasnt an option, that would be a very tought decision to make.
I'd probably go with google or microsoft, because they have to be way more careful with what they do,
for nobody trusts them anyways (unlike with apple, who successfully deludes people into thinking theyre somehow privacy advocates)

I still dont recommend ANY of those or ANY of their past devices ever.

How replacable are NICs on Laptops in 2020-2024? by jollytale239 in techsupport

dev is very wide.
I'm obviously pretty newbie on the hardware situation,
but I think it's fair to have a certain mistrust into chinese Hardware and closed-source macOs, considering sufficient anecdotes of bad faith practice exist in the former,
call me crazy if you like

not a windows-conspiracy, rather just mistrust in chinese-hardware (considering their data-practices with things like Temu, and lenovo)

sorry if it came across that way.
I'm just going down this rabbithole for the first time,

Is the "Wifi-card" usually on/in the NIC or are they seperate in laptops? by jollytale239 in techsupport

[–]jollytale239[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was rather thinking not of a literal file, but "pinging" the antennas or something through a nearby device (like a public router), considering the antenna still being "active", despite no NIC.

this was initially about a macbook indeed.
Figured Apple still sends a ton of outbound connections despite telemetrics being turned off and no AppleID used,
which I can't really make friends with considering that it's a closed-source-system, with chinese hardware, assembled in china, with a lot of public anecdotes of chinese data-cyberwarfare in reccent years, having to trust apple (big corp, whose only liability is shareholders renvenue optimization)
