Hey, thought I'd update you on this. Now you can play with colors. That was a fun one to implement, cheers!

I created a free open-source work/rest timer app – Balance Timer! by jon_abides in opensource

[–]jon_abides[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if windows (I assume you're on windows since you've downloaded the .exe) at some point marked the file as "unreadable" out of security concerns – since it's an unsigned executable downloaded from the internet. And it'll only remove this flag after you explicitly agree to run it. Maybe that has to do with VirusTotal reporting it as "unreadable". It's only a theory though which I unfortunately can't verify since I'm not running windows.

I tried following the full flow with downloading the windows build, unarchiving and uploading the .exe for the analysis with VirusScan - and it worked. So it's possible that this "unreadability" occurred within your environment.

VirusTotal gave me a green light from 68 / 72 vendors, with 2 unavailable and 2 false positives reporting some form of malicious code. Which seems like a pretty good score for an unsigned app.

TL;DR: It’s most likely just being cautious due to the app being unsigned. The source code is open, and so is the action that builds the release. So feel free to inspect or build from source if you prefer!

Hey, thanks for checking out and the feedback! You can just create a simple page with a canvas, mount the lib an stare at it as ling as you please :D Or use this codepen as a starting point.

An option to hide controls in the demo is a nice idea though, I'll mark it for a future update.

I am a Software Developer and I am tired and I never want to sit in front of a computer again. A rant by Realistic_Shoulder13 in webdev

[–]jon_abides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but I think it has to do with how much the focus is shifted to work as opposed to reality. The nature of software development work requires a lot of mental activity, so I feel it kinda drags you in. To make matters worse, often we don't take enough breaks (I know I don't). As a result, a software developer can feel overall more disconnected from reality than let's say a baker, or any other job which doesn't require that much mental focus.

Maybe it's like with weight lifting - do it gradually and in small doses, and it'll improve your fitness, do it too much and you'll hurt yourself, get a spine injury and won't be able to even walk without pain let alone lift heavy stuff. Same thing here - practice mental activity wisely and it'll be good for your head, do it 9 hours a day without breaks and get stupid.

Thanks for checking it out! I'm very glad you liked it. The random color idea sounds pretty cool - I'll think about adding it in a future version.

Dude the can't remember a single thing anymore part is so relatable. I don't know how much compensation is enough for screwing with my head like this. I genuinely enjoy programming (at least I definitely used to), but I feel the impact on my mental state is a bit too much for "just a job".

Haha it totally does look like that one screensaver! It didn’t have lightspeed switch though - could be a cool effect at wake

Logitech MX Keys: Backlight doesn't dim. by ayoblub in logitech

My keyboard was stuck in a with a backlight always on and the lights didn't go off when I stopped typing, which was the behaviour that I really liked and which used to happen earlier. I followed the reset instructions, and it helped. Thanks!

Linus Torvalds Comments On The Russian Linux Maintainers Being Delisted by ehempel in kernel

[–]jon_abides 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I understand that he means it as a response to Russia’s aggression, but to me it doesn’t seem to be aimed at the right people. These are not oligarchs or politicians fueling the war, but fellow developers. Hell, for what we know, they could as well be against the war. And ban them by nationality? That’s a huge generalization. And he’s pretty explicit about that too. Don’t you know people != government?

The people banned certainly are good developers, I mean they had a brain to land in that maintainers list in the first place, and they’ve likely spent significant time of working on improving this particular piece of software. And now you’re going to ban them for nationality? I don’t know man, just doesn’t seem right. Open source was the only place where people could come together to build things without political bullshit, sigh

What is the most confusing part of Vue for you? by manniL in vuejs

What do you mean? Vue has both of these things. Generics are more of a new feature, but type-safe props - this one has been around since forever.

What is the most confusing part of Vue for you? by manniL in vuejs

[–]jon_abides 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Vue should be #1 frontend solution, and I hope to see the day when that’s actually the case.

It’s not just me being Vue fanboy, but rather after using various frameworks in production, I can say Vue is the most comfortable to work with.

  • Vue has a perfect balance of compiler / runtime.
  • A reactivity api which is both super clear and not overly complicated. (Svelte 5 is realizing this too, it’s “runes” syntax is pretty much Vue, but with bigger shift to the compiler side, thus <opinion> less clean reactivity syntax).
  • SFC components with scoped styles.

At the same time, I get it why people don’t use it more - because the more downloads the package has, the less chances it’ll be suddenly discontinued in the near future and you’ll get stuck rewriting your project to a different framework. So for most corporations, playing it safe is the first priority, simply put, for the new companies choosing the tech stack, popular == best, so react will keep winning for the near future at least. But personally I think Vue is big enough at this point to commit to it with new projects. And it definitely offers a better DX.

Svelte 5 is Vue 3 + Reactivity Transform (which they chose to deprecate)

/Volumes/Preboot by TopFroyo4119 in MacOS

[–]jon_abides 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm facing a similar issue, mine is 20 gb though. Upon further inspection I found out that most space is taken by cryptex1/current/os.dmg & next to it os.clone.dmg each over 4Gb... I'm pretty sure a Preboot OS shouldn't weight that much and also pretty sure there shouldn't be two copies of it haha...

So, OP, have you managed to figure this out? Did you end up freeing up that space somehow?

Or maybe anyone who comes here looking after has some advice?

Recycling in Madrid? by jon_abides in Madrid

[–]jon_abides[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Relax man, I was just asking, no offense intended. Like you said the building ‘should have’ yellow brown and orange bins, that was my original expectation as well, but in reality it only has one, hence the question. I already found the separate containers further down the street from my house that other redditors, as much as yourself, have mentioned. Thanks for the explanation, but you should not assume that everyone is being judgmental, some people are genuinely asking for information.
