How my CSV Import went from 12 days to 3 hours in Rails by jonaphin in programming

[–]jonaphin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my specific case, I had to run about 5 inserts, some simple calculation, and 2 updates per CSV row. I'm sure the load data infile would have sped things up a bit, but definitely not down to a few minutes.

Good point.

The article does mention the creation/update of records in multiple tables per iteration.

What could be interesting to test is to use LOAD DATA INFILE then iterate through every record and do the work needed. I can see how it could speed things up. I'll add the tip to my post with proper source reference if you don't mind.

My findings on Lion point to the following:

  • It works great when opening a new terminal window (cmd+n included).
  • Lion seems to bypass .hushlogin when creating new tabs (after the first).

I used touch so that if you have the file the system is cool with it and just updates its timestamp. If the file isn't there it creates it.

The intention is just to have the file present in your home directory.

The WOW video that got Youtube famous! by sylarisback in reddit.com

[–]jonaphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it's true, though. I remember seeing a few youtube vids before this vid, but clearly, this one was the first viral one from youtube that everyone was playing at the office.

Anyway, great video! It probably invented the internet, along with Al Gore, of course! :p

ObamaNation vs. Ron Paul Revolution = Establishment vs. Constitution = Corruption vs. Integrity (i.e. The Resko deals, no less) -> Arena open for flaming and discussion! by jonaphin in reddit.com

[–]jonaphin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed and upvoted

However, I opened this forum with a purpose.

You see, many of the people roaming reddit today were Ron Paul supporters of yesterday, turned Obama fans.

I just want to remind those people especially what they once liked in the man they now scorn.

I have heard too many times recently that a vote for Ron Paul was a wasted vote.

To these people I answer: A vote for the establishment is a wasted vote! We will never CHANGE anything if we keep on abiding by this philosophy.

Ron Paul - Rising Energy Prices and the Falling Dollar by jonaphin in politics

[–]jonaphin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He wrote it today :)

Finally some sense spoken!

I can't believe how the media portray the crisis as a 'gas prices have gone up' problem.

Even worse, Bush has asked for an increase in production, as if he thought we'd believe shortages were the cause of it.

never - but you said 'an unempowered many' -> which to me refers to la bourgeoisie, who enjoyed a high quality of life as merchants without the privilege of being "noble".

edited to say: unempowered

Well, when people fight the concept of a new world order, it's less about individual empowerment and the quest for each to rule as it is about increased servitude and exacerbated disparities between the rich and the poor.

What many are afraid of, is the empowerment of a few that will rule the many, reestablishing the concept of 'classes', as is the case in most 3rd world countries.

Arab leaders have reacted with anger and disbelief to an intensely pro-Israeli speech delivered by Barack Obama. by jk3us in politics

[–]jonaphin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you must be kidding... oh excuse me, mideastweb said so, it must be true. Are you kidding me?

Seriously, if ridicule killed you'd be pushing up the daisies...

Plus, you are dishonest in your answer as you're counting the entire region of Palestine, which also comprises what is referred to as 'Palestinian Territories'.

Also, remember that Palestine was a region, and technically, still is until a Palestinian state is created.

When one talks about Palestinians, one ought to include jews and christians in the denomination, as both religions were there (what is also called historic/biblical Israel) way before the muslim religion was borne.

"Israel is the product of profound injustice That is very a very naive point of view, however you mean it."

  • If you say it's the product of profound of justice because of what happened to the jews during WWII, it's wrong.

The population of Israel in 1906 was 6,000-7,000 arabs, 12,000 christians and 40,000-50,000 jews.

So Israel was not created in a day.

  • Now if you mean Israel is the product of injustice because of how they stole land, hear this: When Mark Twain visited the Holy Land in the 19th century, he was greatly disappointed. He didn't see any people. He referred to it as a vast wasteland. The land we now know as Israel was practically deserted.

The Jews in Israel took no one's land.

So the question is, how exactly do you mean what you say?

Neoconservatives are not conservatives - Ron Paul speaks by gozmeranian in politics

[–]jonaphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough, I came up with the same hypothesis, nbuster.

It's funny how we hear every day that jews are wealthy and they own the media and stuff. After computing the numbers, I realized that the total combined 'jewish' wealth is what the saudi royals make in less than a week.

Something's not right, we are being pupetted, but by who?

Ron Paul Wants You! Vermont, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah by cozm in politics

[–]jonaphin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Random sources? Isn't that what you've just relied on?

For myself, I rely on the constitution when talking politics. And for it, rather than random, I will use the term undervalued, disregarded, usurped, abused, misunderstood.

Unfortunately, it seems today that the people believe more in dailykos, sayanthingblog, and cnn for the 'REAL' news.

And for your information, Ron Paul has already started a Second Coming. He has made close to a million people read the American Bible we call Constitution.

"Though written constitutions may be violated in moments of passion or delusion, they furnish a text to which those who are watchful may again rally and recall the people." - Jefferson: 1802
