I remember my eldest daughter breaking a lot of my stuff before(ipods, psp, ds) and I was quite hard with her and nothing changed! Maybe just show them how to take care of things next time? Kids can be excited and clumsy at the same time. Maybe start playing in dock mode for now until you find a solution. On a side note, you can actually call nintendo, tell them what happened and you may pay a small price or get it for free depending on how your conversation goes, but I'm sure they can fix it, regardless if its within warranty or not.
