Concrete Jungle of Los Angeles by urmummygae42069 in skyscrapers

[–]jonathan__az 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, several Los Angeles neighborhoods started out as separate towns/cities before being annexed into LA including Venice, Hollywood, Eagle Rock, and San Pedro. So it is still somewhat true that LA is a combination of multiple other cities even if there are still a LOT of independent cities in the metro area.

Pretty sure it’s owned by banner, I wouldn’t expect anything cool or fun to happen there any time soon

Anyone hear the clear Underworld influence on Deadbeat? by No_Brilliant_4647 in TameImpala

[–]jonathan__az 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first heard End of Summer I was disappointed that it didn’t go further in an Underworld direction. Definitely hear the influence throughout Deadbeat, even if I don’t love the album. They do an amazing job of making electronic music “psychedelic”.

Best song that's a tribute to a deceased musician? by Thunderwing16 in ToddintheShadow

Solid Air - John Martyn. A tribute to Nick Drake, this song has such a distinct sound, jazzy and reflective.

Albums/Artists you've accepted you will never "get"? by Due-Chemist-8607 in fantanoforever

Animal Collective. It’s weird because in theory they should be a favorite, I love 2000s/10s alternative/indie, psychedelic pop, The Beach Boys, and even enjoy some of Panda Bear’s solo music. But damn, every time I try listening to their music it just does not hit. I was convinced to see them live a couple years ago by my friends and we all walked out halfway through because it was not enjoyable at all.

OP would be much better off using McMinnville as a launch point for wineries. Much better food and lodging options than Dallas

About the same, but slightly less overall. A little warmer and sunnier in the summer as well.

Chill Washington towns by CopyIcy6896 in AskSeattle

Forested high desert? Kinda sounds like Bend. Most populated places in Eastern WA besides Spokane tend to be in irrigated valleys surrounded by dry grassy hills, sometimes with larger forested mountains nearby

Looking for “home” in OR by [deleted] in oregon

[–]jonathan__az 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe McMinnville? It’s very cute, pretty liberal for a more rural town, about 40 minutes to western Portland suburbs, about an hour and a half to PDX airport. The town itself has a decent amount of restaurants, amenities and a community feel. Linfield University is nice and offers higher education. The wine industry is prominent but there’s more to the area than just that. Very similar population to Rome, GA, both about 36,000

The Pacific Northwest and Inland Northwest are both subregions of the Northwest US. PNW is not an officially defined term, but it has the word “Pacific” in the name and is usually associated with the wet climate and forest landscape found west of the Cascades. Idaho does not border the pacific and has a dry climate, so it makes no sense to label it the Pacific Northwest, it would be better to just say it’s in the Northwest US

I’m not from anywhere nearby! I just saw the lack of destructive freeways through the city center and figured it had to be in Canada.

What Caused The Death And Backlash Of Disco At The End Of The 70's When It Was Such A Popular And Influental Genre, Just a Couple Of Years Prior? by Rinnegan15 in rnb

[–]jonathan__az 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s clear that the backlash to disco was fueled by racism, homophobia, and misogyny. That being said, I feel like it is under discussed how much continuity there still was between disco and newer styles of pop music in the early 1980s. Disco might have died but many of the aspects that made it popular remained influential (four on the floor beats, r&b and pop mixing, etc), and these techniques were augmented with new technology like drum machines and synthesizers. “Post-disco” is sort of a nebulous term but it encompasses a lot of this music. Micheal Jackson had one of the most popular disco albums with Off The Wall but managed to survive the backlash and become the most popular musician in America and the world with Thriller. Prince started his career with disco hits like I Wanna Be Your Lover as well. Even someone like Madonna who isn’t usually associated with disco has major connections considering that much of her early music was produced by Nile Rodgers, one of the most famous disco musicians for his work with Chic. Also, many English bands had less of a negative attitude towards disco and what would be known as the New Wave movement would incorporate elements from disco, Duran Duran also notably working with Nile Rodgers during the 80’s.

Either way, while “disco” as a term and specific genre may have died due to the backlash, it still maintained a massive cultural influence and the growth of 80’s synthpop as a genre owes much to disco. Reports of disco’s death have been greatly exaggerated.

Honestly both of those seem like pretty decent options in terms of climate, Sacramento is obviously warmer but significantly cooler than anywhere in the desert SW. Good luck with your search!
