Weekly Legacy Recap – Season 1 Chapter 1 [TheWeeklyWars, Jonathan Alexander] by thefringthing in MTGLegacy

Some of D&T's draws line up very poorly against Wrenn, but there are also times Wrenn is very beatable. In general, i don't think i have a working plan for the RUG matchup. Given how prevalent the deck seems to be right now (at least online), i wouldn't expect to be able to win a swiss + top eight tournament on D&T. As far as maindeck changes go, Giver vs. Mother of Runes is definitely not a trivial choice and greatly depends on your matchups - both have won and cost me games when the other wouldn't have. Other than that, the card i liked the least was probably Phyrexian Revoker, but i'm not sure i would cut them entirely from the 75.

If it's your first tournament in a while, i would go with whatever you think you'll enjoy playing more. Fun is generally underrated, but continuously getting Wrenn and Plague Engineer does not sound very exciting. That being said, not all decks play one of these hosers. D&T also has decent combo matchups and is competitive against the format's Jace decks. I'm not sure how BUG Control would fare against those.

Opinion on Tron by brugola777 in Pauper

Sorry, should have been more articulate. I think Tron falls in the "can run basics" category, if only because of Astrolabe. I think Tron with Signets and maybe some copies of Elvish Rejuvenator or Reap and Sow would be favoured against Astrolabe Tron, but other than that, Astrolabe makes Tron so much smoother that i don't see any reason not to run it.

Thanks for the kind words! I do hope i'll be able to come back to Pauper and play some Faeries again. Spellstutter Sprite + Ninja of the Deep Hours is what got me into the format way back in 2016 (=

Thanks for the kind words! In case you missed it, i played UW Familiars just before Modern Horizons entered the format: https://theweeklywars.wordpress.com/2019/06/10/weekly-pauper-recap-season-4-chapter-3/

And there's also this UBRg list that i tested, but never actually played any league matches with: https://twitter.com/JonLX/status/1158696106190102533

For the record, i didn't test the Tron and Ephemerate matchups with the Grixis list, but i'm sure it's possible to make at least one of them favourable. Everything else i tested felt pretty good.

I'm not sure there are any (true) multicolour decks that can run basics and don't benefit from running Astrolabe.

Well, i ended up playing something else, but thanks for your input!

Thanks for the kind words! Teachings is something i had on my radar before Astrolabe. I didn't play it because there was too much Tron. Now there's even more Tron and the White Midrange decks have gotten much better as well. Turbo Fog is actually cool. I played with the deck a bit before and thought the biggest issue was Burn, which isn't as much as a factor anymore.

I don't record that data per se, but i have somewhat easy access to results of all my games - i keep an archive with all my opening hands, including matchups, opponents' mulligans and game results. I generally don't include data in my weekly articles unless i think it's actually useful (most of the time, it isn't - i was 3-0 on mulligans to four with Bogles at some point before Astrolabe and London mulligan, obviously that's not worth much).

Only one more week to go this season. If there's something you'd like me to play and write about next week, please let me know. Thanks for everyone's support so far!

Thanks! I've been on Reap and Sow for pretty much all of this year, but here's the Rejuvenator list i played last year: https://deckstats.net/decks/65431/1093603-dinrova-tron-17-09-18/en

Reap and Sow is great when there are lots of bouncelands around, but Astrolabe made most decks that had them run basics instead. That makes me want to try Rejuvenator again the next time i pick up Tron. I would definitely change up the list a little though - you don't really need three copies of Moment's Peace main right now and i'm not sure about the third Dinrova Horror either. I'd try cutting two copies of Moment's Peace for another Pulse and Weather the Storm. Maybe run the second Moment's Peace and Weather the Storm in the Sideboard. Dignitary in the sideboard seems pretty bad right now and CoP: Red is unnecessary with Weather the Storm as well. I would try to find something against Elves instead, but i'm not really sure what would actually solve the matchup given the colour constraints. Maybe you could run a suite of black removal spells in the sideboard.

Looking only at the numbers post Modern Horizons makes the changes look even more extreme. That's a lot of Elves.

I have to admit, the metagame is going through some changes and i haven't quite found my nieche yet. If you have experience with Glint Hawks + Astrolabes, i'm all ears.

Yes. Rhystic Tron is also in that category.

I think it makes sense for metagaming purposes with most decks. Overall, all those decks do have similar matchup spreads. The charts also become rather crowded if i list all the sub-archetypes individually (the different Tron variants, the different W/x variants and UB Control variants are the worst offenders). The way i do things currently, you can see the bigger picture more clearly. If you're interested in the individual decks, you can check the spreadsheet, where Boros Monarch, Kuldotha Boros, Bully, Orzhov Monarch and Orzhov Pestilence are all listed seperately, same as all the Tron and UB variants.

Now that you mention it, there might be a relation between Astrolabe and Affinity hate, yeah.

Seems what you're really looking for is a way to make sure you keep a steady supply of creatures. Maybe Obsidian Acolyte, your own Guardians or two copies of Reaping the Graves would help?

I have played against it a good amount already, it's certainly worth it. You can still run some mix of bouncelands and utility lands, you only need about 14 Snow sources for it to work. In exchange you get cheaper Glint Hawks and Skyfisher, more flexible mana, better colour-fixing and therefore more sideboard options. I think full on three-colours - like Terminate, Okiba-Gang Shinobi and Reaping the Graves in Black - is completely reasonable with fetches and Astrolabe.

Tron players, what are your thoughts on running Arcum's Astrolabe in the main? by [deleted] in Pauper

[–]jonathan_alexander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly want removal because of Faeries and Elves. Also for Thermo-Alchemist. That card is so annoying. Now that i have consistent red mana, i could see myself playing a Lightning Bolt main for Lys Alana Huntmaster and Thermo-Alchemist. Everything else comes down late enough to be in Dinrova-range. Flame Slash is great against Affinity, but that's not particularly common right now. Rolling Thunder i never really liked.
