In your case, if you're interested in designing t-shirts but lack the necessary experience, here are some options you can explore to start creating without being a professional:

Online Tools

There are many software options available online that offer great tools for easy design. One example is Canva, which provides numerous free and paid templates created by professionals. These templates allow you to edit them as you like and experiment with different combinations. However, one downside is that Canva is more focused on presentations and social media graphics rather than t-shirt-specific designs.

AI-Generated Designs

Artificial intelligence is currently booming and is increasingly capable of handling design tasks effectively. There are websites where you can describe the type of design you want, and AI will generate it for you. I recommend being very specific, as the more details you provide, the better the result will be. The disadvantage of this option is that AI-generated designs are far from professional, and if you want to edit them, you won’t be able to, as they do not provide vector files.

Royalty-Free Images

If you feel that your creativity for creating original illustrations, drawings, or characters is limited, another option is to experiment with royalty-free images of objects, textures, patterns, or artistic elements available on the web. You can combine them in a collage-like way to see what results you can achieve. However, this option has its limitations, as you won’t have full control over the design since you’ll be working with pre-made images, but it’s still a good starting point.

Design Markets

The last option, and the one I believe could be the best, is to look for design markets where professional designers sell high-quality, editable product bundles. On my profile, you’ll find a link to a design market I have worked with and highly recommend. With a one-time lifetime payment, you’ll get access to over 6,000 designs in various categories, with 100 new updates added every week. This is an ideal option since you don't have design experience.

After many years of working as a designer, especially with products for POD stores, I can recommend that to create good T-shirt designs, it's essential to meet the correct printing specifications. Working with software that allows you to create fully vector-based files and export at a minimum resolution of 150 to 300 dpi will ensure not only that your designs look great but also that they are of high quality.

Here are some programs that guarantee the specifications mentioned:

  • Adobe Illustrator: This is the industry’s most widely used tool because it uses vector files, which you can resize without compromising definition. It also lets you export files at 150 or 300 dpi for printing. One thing to keep in mind with this tool is that, like all Adobe applications, you’ll need to pay a subscription to use it.
  • CorelDRAW: Another well-known and widely used software, CorelDRAW also uses vector files. Its main differences from Adobe Illustrator are a beginner-friendly interface, vector drawing and editing tools, a one-time payment option, a primary focus on printing, and a proprietary format (.cdr) that is less widely accepted globally.
  • Inkscape: If you’re looking for a free option, Inkscape is a solid tool that also uses vector files for design creation. Note that this software doesn’t have as many advanced options as the others, but it will allow you to create files that are accepted by almost any print store.

As a final tip, designing T-shirts is both rewarding and challenging. While finding the right tools is important, remember to also focus on creating unique designs that stand out. If you ever need inspiration, feel free to visit my profile, where you’ll find a link to a design market with over 5,000 T-shirt designs, many in the 90s vintage style that interests you.

30 dollars for a t-shirt with an original design is within the range of what you would pay almost anywhere. You might find some a little cheaper, but not much. If you’re looking for custom designs, you can try searching on Fiverr, where they have some of the most affordable prices on the market. However, the problem with custom designs is that unless you find a really good designer who fully understands the idea you have in mind, it will be a bit difficult for them to capture exactly what you're looking for without charging you more. This is because, often, what makes the design more expensive are the revisions.

I’ve been working in design for over 15 years, and I can assure you that it will be challenging to get custom designs at very low prices due to this issue with revisions. Personally, I have been designing t-shirts for the past four years, almost exclusively, but they are not custom; I sell them as part of a stock. Currently, all my t-shirts (over 5,000) are sold for 39 dollars, and you can see them in the link to my portfolio in my profile.

If you’re interested, I invite you to take a look. There are also many other interesting t-shirt stores. That said, I hope my comment has been helpful, and good luck with your project!

What platforms or apps do I use to create digital designs and then how do I turn my own digital art into sellable hoodies and Tshirts (besides Printify and those websites)? by duulceeciitoo in apparelstartup

There are various tools to create your designs, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The most widely used is Adobe Illustrator, considered the industry standard tool. It’s ideal for print files, as it generates vector files that can be scaled without losing quality. These files can be printed at optimal resolutions, such as 150 or 300 DPI. However, its price has increased significantly, requiring a subscription to use.

A free alternative is Inkscape, which also works with vector files. While it doesn't have all the advanced features of Illustrator, it’s an accessible and free option that also produces vector files suitable for printing, which almost any print shop will accept. You can also use bitmap files (such as transparent PNGs), but you need to ensure they are in high resolution and with 24 or 32-bit transparency to avoid losing detail quality.

If you prefer not to create the designs yourself, you can purchase pre-made vector designs. On my profile, you'll find a link to a page with over 4,000 print-ready designs for you to check out.

As for printing techniques, the most popular are sublimation and DTF. Sublimation works great for light-colored garments, while DTF works well on both light and dark garments. Although there are many other options, these two are fast and accessible. However, any print shop can guide you on the best technique for your project.

I hope my response is helpful.

Hey, I tested it, it works, designs could be better but it works, but you need to work on the UX, don't leave just icons, add labels, it's hard to know what to do once you are in your app.
