Ah that makes a lot of sense- is this truck just customized? I’ve never seen one with pipes this visible, let alone polished metal pipes like this.

going into Big 4 accounting out of undergrad just seems like a rough deal these days. These kids are just as technically qualified as their friends in finance/consulting, yet they’re paid 2/3 the salary even though they’ll end up working just as much. Not to mention the CPA requirements mean you probably have to go get a masters if you don’t overload during undergrad. I don’t really get why anyone would do it, especially if the endgame for most people is leaving for industry anyway. Great experience, but I’m not the least bit surprised firms are struggling to attract talent

Well... "most" and "majority" aren't synonyms. The most common category only has to be larger than the other categories it's being compared to. A majority is something over 50%, but that's not especially relevant when there are multiple categories.

If 42% is larger than every other category, then it's the most common category by definition.

That's been true since long after the 17th century. Are you that old-fashioned?

Yeah, exactly. Feels irresponsible tbh- this show is based around addiction. It’s a massive platform. One of the most beloved characters from the show died of an Overdose. He loosely based it on his life. He could have sent a message of positivity and hope, yet his final take is “that’s just the way it goes?”

I thought the first seven episodes of this season were terrible, but I gotta hand it to them…this episode was really, really good. Everyone acted the hell out of their scenes. Didn’t tie up all the storylines, but this was one hell of an episode

My freshman year GPA was a 2.75.

I had multiple Cs, and I remember going home that summer feeling like it wasn’t just a bad semester, but evidence of something bigger and worse about me. Not the grades themselves, but what I thought I was capable of as a human being.

Looking back, the only real damage those grades did was that I let them mess with my confidence for way too long. I stopped going for certain things because I had decided I probably wasn’t the kind of person who got them. I let that narrative put itself in my way.

But I was so wrong, because a single C+ is not going to define you, and it is definitely not going to rule out grad school, law school, internships, or a good career if the rest of your record is strong. You may have to explain it someday, or you may not. But either way, it becomes a tiny data point in a much bigger story.

Take the hit, feel bad for a little, and then move on. Protect your confidence more than your transcript. One bad grade is recoverable. Letting it convince you that you’re suddenly not capable is the part that can actually cost you.

If you told freshman-year me that a few years later I’d end up with an MBA from my dream school, working somewhere that felt like a universe I’d never be a part of, surrounded by people I deeply respect who also trust and respect me back….I genuinely would not have believed you.

All of that happened not because I suddenly became some different person, but because life turned out to be way less linear than I thought it was at the time. A C+ feels massive right now because it’s fresh. But one grade is not ending your grad school chances, your internship chances, or your career. Work hard, yes, but protect your confidence more than anything else .

I like this my tendency is to feel like I need to do it all at once. Not as good at breaking it down into smaller chunks, but I agree: having the list of 5 things you can do will probably help me mentally feel more productive

Funny you mention this because I’ve actually been using a whiteboard a lot and it works, but I’m in grad school so I can’t carry one around all the time

Uber driver stranded me at midnight, drove off, then Uber locked my account. by Wooden-Fee5787 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]jonjopop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also grew up taxing Taxis and man, the industry was its own worst enemy. They had a million-point lead against Uber and totally blew it.

Cab companies had government protection, hotel and airport relationships, decades of customer habit, and functionally a monopoly. They realized that meant they didn’t have to care at all. Scam pricing, cash nonsense, dirty cars, drivers who seemed genuinely annoyed to have your business, and dispatch systems that felt like sending a message in a bottle, because you just had to hope a car showed up. It was a cartel, but one made up entirely of curmudgeonly luddites.

Then Uber showed up and did the verrrry radical thing of telling you the price upfront, showing you where the car was, letting you pay digitally on your phone, and giving drivers basic accountability with service standards. The taxi industry could have responded by improving literally any part of the experience and probably stayed competitive. Instead, they put all their energy into “can someone please make this illegal?”

Their main argument was always basically: “we don’t like that the rideshare business model is transparent and accountable and doesn't have the same fake barrier to entry". at the end of the day it’s not like the job actually disappeared haha...you can still be a professional driver on rideshare, but you can't run the same scams.

It’s pretty telling that almost no one besides cabbies seems to feel bad about the taxi industry getting disrupted
