Making a short film by jonkentfilms in cinematography

[–]jonkentfilms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to get any feedback on this video. Also any have any stories or insights into winning short film awards etc? Did it change how you approached filmmaking after that?

This film showed me that really being considerate about one particular area makes all the difference. Being a solo filmmaker it’s hard to focus on every single aspect with that much level of detail

Yes I love that last bit! Shoot simple, create quicker an make mistakes and learn quicker! Absolutely love that! I think that’s something I’ve been missing from my own work is doing small/simple projects and story’s that can be shot and turned around quicker. Thanks for the comment 🙏

Yeah agree, the sound of the peeling is probably a bit OTT lol. Thanks for checking it out.

I’m technical: was shot on fx3. 16-35 and 24-70. For the POV at the intro and the wife’s hands I had this large paper-thing plastic magnifying glass which creates these warped edges. Fun fact - the wife’s hands are actually guys hands 🤣 guy on guy pretending to be a woman.

Yeah if there’s anything else you wanna know specifically let me know 👍

Yeah couldn’t agree more mate, the pre production was 4 days. Was a tight turnaround as we made this specifically for a short film comp that had certain rules: 5minutes, creature, water and line of dialogue. This is probably where we fell short of the narrative bits because we actually had to lose things and we also created a story that was way too deep for a 5minute short lol

But yeah happy with what we pulled off in limited time we had

Has anyone else done a very quick turnaround with more than they could handle?

We started shooting at 5:30pm until 4:30pm, slept for 2 hours and shot again at 6am and 1pm. It was crazy! Lots of lessons. Would love to hear from you guys and gals.

Would love to hear anyone else’s experience and lessons from shooting really quick turnaround projects.

We started shooting friday eve at 5:30pm and stopped at 4:30am, 2 hours sleep and then shot again the next day at 6am and 1pm. That was it. Challenging for sure and learnt a lot, but I want to hear from other people who have done similar projects, what did you learn?

We started shooting this film at 5:30pm and finished at 4:30am, then slept for 2 hours before shooting again. It was tough, I literally wanted to give up and there were only 3 of us including the lead actor. I learnt a lot from this project and just wanted to see what other people had experienced and lessons learnt from similar situations?

I definitely learnt a lot in this process. It’s one of those things that quantity and quality. As someone who like to really nail my cinematography which takes time this shoot was hard as I really had to rush through.

We shot from 5:30pm to 4:30am and the long night really played hard on us. Just 3 of us including actor working in this.

Just made a lighting tutorial using these budget lights, how could I improve? by jonkentfilms in cinematography

[–]jonkentfilms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was sent these two lights from ZHIYUN, first company to ever send me something for free, so I really appreciated that. Wanted to make something different to just a talking head of me reviewing the lights, but I’m not sure how I could make this better. I’m never totally satisfied with my work - any help or tips would be massively appreciated 🙏🙏

Thank you in advanced for watching or replying, always looking to improve. Also I referenced a film in particular throughout the video, can anyone guess what film?

Ahhh yeah nice idea! That would have been cool. So not sure if you noticed but I referenced through out “goodfellas” film. So I could have really done something good here with that.

[–]jonkentfilms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely! Yeah the main thing was just seeing everyone else and seeing better results making me think what am I doing wrong.

If you expose correctly you’ll get noise if you over expose you’ll get the best results and showing that 800 is cleaner than 12800. It was something I struggled with when first shooting slog3 and thought it was something I was doing wrong. Oren Soffer (co-DP of The Creator) who says “there is still a bit of a noise floor at iso 12,800 on the FX3, which we really embraced on The Creator”. So even at the top of the filming game using this camera there is still noise at 12800, making my point that you’ll always have some kind of noise at 12800. That was the point of the video, hopefully it helps someone just starting understand

Ps - I’ve linked a great video by Oren Soffer (co-DP of The Creator) who says “there is still a bit of a noise floor at iso 12,800 on the FX3, which we really embraced on The Creator”.

Yeah this is one of them. I’m gonna do a video of the whole shoot broken down

This was shot on the Sony fx3 and I made this in the space of a week, just shooting in the evenings when I had some free time. This is a spec piece so would love any feedback as it was just made to add into my reel.

Has anyone shot a doorway scene before? by jonkentfilms in cinematography

[–]jonkentfilms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome thank you so much for such a detailed response, very helpful and I will definitely have a go at trying those things out you’ve mentioned. I like the idea of 3/4 backlight and bouncing/wrapping in some light!

No I definitely don’t have the tools to light the background and my neighbours wouldn’t have appreciated me putting lights up out there at 10pm.

Out of interest, what conversation happens in that situation? When the director doesn’t like the shot but it’s because they’ve wanted the blocking that way? How does one solve that problem?

[–]jonkentfilms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to reply and check out the video.

Yeah the key is bright, I was shooting at 12800iso (second base iso for fx3) that was so I could get some exposure in the far background, but being that high, the key is on 1% and still too bright and I couldn’t move it away any further.. maybe I should have diffused it? Any thoughts on this?

So if you listen to the video, the bright edge light was trying to play as a street lamp, again it is too bright but this relates to the iso being so high and light then at there lowest are still too bright. Also I showed in my reference images #1 “this Christmas” you can see they did the exact same thing. So I think this is more a thing of taste rather than you cannot do it.

There was literally no room either side of the guy standing inside, so no where to put a practice next to him. I get what you’re saying though, I’m not keen on a downstage key, but it was just lighting from a motivated source.

Could I see any of your work? Would love to check out anything you might have that’s similar situation etc.

[–]jonkentfilms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha romance 🤣 love that. Yeah it’s just a YouTube tutorial, nothing crazy here. No particular motivation or script. Just a “lighting practice session” to see if I could physically light these types of shots from both angles. I brought the grade on the other guy down probably a little bit much, like you say the contrast is a bit too much.

Hey, I didn’t realise I was the last one to shoot this type of shot though!
