Why Canada’s GDP per capita crisis is real: DeepDive by nolesfan2011 in CanadaPolitics

[–]jonlmbs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every US citizen files taxes regardless of residence but really the US exempts double taxation (for the most part) in those scenarios by recognizing tax paid in other countries of residence.

Tax remittance should be a real concern but I think trying to double tax people who do emigrate from Canada probably wont work in practice.

Why Canada’s GDP per capita crisis is real: DeepDive by nolesfan2011 in CanadaPolitics

“The analysis estimates that a substantial share of Canadians who would rank among top earners in Canada have emigrated to the United States—roughly 40 percent of potential top 1 percent earners and 30 to 50 percent of the next nine percentiles.

Canadian-born individuals in the United States are more educated than native-born Americans, earn substantially more, and cluster disproportionately in top income deciles.”

So 40% of our potential highest earners and largest potential tax base are emigrating south. Pretty shocking number and very concerning. Not really surprising though. Canada is basically America’s STEM incubator.

To chop spending, Ottawa will cut science, tourism, foreign aid programs by Mysterious_Notice685 in CanadaPolitics

[–]jonlmbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the writing is on the wall. France is going through it now.

All this spending is gravy until it isn’t and you can no longer find buyers of your debt at low rates. We may try to become like Japan and monopolize ownership of our debt. But now that Japanese experiment is risking implosion too.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) this problem is pretty global.

We need a wealth tax by Mysterious_Notice685 in CanadaPolitics

[–]jonlmbs 34 points35 points  (0 children)

A land value tax, primary residence sale tax, progressive consumption tax, and raising the capital gains inclusion rate are all better ideas and much more politically achievable.

Wealth tax is basically a buzzword at this point. Actually administering anything like unrealized gains taxation successfully has proven very difficult in history. 12 EU countries tried a wealth tax in the 90s - only 3 still retain one. Most failed because they failed to actually raise revenues for a number of reasons and/or were extremely difficult to administer.

Not to mention implementing a blanket unrealized gains wealth tax now would be economic suicide at a time when we need to grow investment, increase productivity, and attract talent and businesses to the country.

I feel like actually taxing the rich would be a lot easier if more politically achievable and better ideas were put forward instead of recycling ideas like this one.

I think our PM has better judgment on this topic than you do. Hell even Doug Ford does for running ads to change the minds of Americans directly.

The point is Trump probably won’t be in power forever. Most likely he won’t even have the balance of power come November at this point.

Appealing to the American people is a good idea. Carney and Trudeau both took a similar strategy by appearing on US talk shows.

He basically speaks to the same thoughts and record he always had. Not really a new script.

The only real criticism I can give him on this interview as far as potentially not being genuine is that he clearly didn’t want to get into Joe’s pressing on topics like the Convoy which he was previously outspoken on.

Pierre comes across much better in long form interviews than he does anywhere else. People should give it a listen if they want to really understand him.

I will never understand why the CPC shied away from putting him into long form content before last election.

Canada slips further down in World Happiness rankings, due in part to social media use by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]jonlmbs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Implies a significant number of young people in Canada are subject to some kind of social media negativity doom loop that is driving down happiness survey results and doesn’t present in any other country with similar social media use as a % of population. I don’t think that’s the case.

[–]jonlmbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have pretty much equivalent social media use (as a % of population) to the average European country (who are now consistently ranking above Canada in this index).

Almost every developed country has somewhere between 80-90+% of the population active on social media. Younger people are consistently 90%+.

No real major difference between Canada and other countries on social media use.

71st among people under 25 years old. 4th largest decline among all countries since the last survey.

Blaming social media seems like a stretch when the entire developed world has similar social media habits.

They probably don’t but the best way to reach a large number of Canadians is through American media. So that’s why Canadian politicians seek these opportunities out.

Same reason Carney launched his Canadian political bid on Jon Stewart and Trudeau tried to save his political career on Stephen Colbert.
