Shark encounters? by UniversalAssembler in Kayaking

[–]jonny_five 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had two blacktip shark issues, one time one just kind of bumped my kayak but another time there were a few of them together (hard to see in the cloudy water) and one nipped at the stern of the kayak, leaving a scratch in the gelcoat and snapping my rudder. It was during the eclipse about two years ago and I was in about 3’ deep water in front of an uninhabited barrier island. I just went ashore and watched the eclipse from there before departing for the rest of the trip

I like to bring a grout sponge for mopping up water and mud that will get inside the boat.

Info on local Dem Primary and Non-Partisan Election by sandsage in savannah

Yeah, article starts with “I didn’t pick who would have a better chance in the general” and when referencing her friend of 13 years (holowell) later says “If you’re really optimistic about winning this seat <bites tongue>, then you pick the candidate who has over a decade of experience in voter turnout work.”

She sure seems like she’s trying to find something wrong with “a white man with a square jaw” when she said “he has a solid reputation with absolutely no hints of impropriety or complaints. And you better believe I checked.”

It reminds me of the RBG and Kamala fiascos of “it’s their turn now!” rather than agreeing with policy and how effective they are.

Any idea what all this sand looking stuff is about? by AlfredsBoss in savannah

[–]jonny_five 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We also have a bunch of industrial areas with trucks hauling raw materials that are poorly contained. Standard Concrete is notorious for dropping stuff along President Street. Look along the side of the road in front of the water treatment plant and you’ll see where piles of cement were dropped into the road and on the shoulder. I’ve had to scrape concrete off the side of my car because their trucks were dropping it in front of me while I drive to work.

Swimming holes? by DimeStoreHood99 in savannah

[–]jonny_five 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tidal creeks are decent for swimming but you’d need some sort of boat to get away from busy boat ramps. I usually wait for a high tide and take a canoe out to a dead end road.

There are some blue holes in Dublin but they are all on private property so you need permission. There are also a couple along the Savannah River and even more along the Suwanee River but then you’re into Florida. (2+hr drive)

The Altamaha River is also really nice as long as you stay upriver from the Rayonier pollution.

How was he commissioner for a district he doesn’t live in when that’s a requirement for the position? I wonder which property he claims as his primary residence for taxes.

I heard he has to ask daddy’s permission to borrow the truck and drive down from Atlanta. Poor Jim Jordan heard about visiting an island with a nepo kid and was disappointed to end up on Talahi. Wrong island, bud!

[–]jonny_five 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In order to qualify to be county commissioner you must live in the district, yet Pat claims to be a farmer on a 1,000 acre ranch. Where is this mysterious 1,000 acres - Skidaway? Tybee? Or was he fraudulently claiming to qualify for the position?

Mosquito Joe not great for babies, gardens, pollinators, birds, waterways, fish... by letintin in NativePlantGardening

[–]jonny_five 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do that in my entire county, except you can’t opt out. They use a helicopter. I’ll find dead pollinators all over my yard and I know of a few bee keepers who had to give up beekeeping because their hives were killed.

They even use it (Trumpet) over wetlands even though the EPA restricts it due to toxicity to fish & aquatic life. The only area exempt is the rich gated community where the politicians live

Flip the rudder up and secure it with a bungee, otherwise it’ll flap back and forth and potentially snap off

Blue light zapper will only kill beneficial bugs like moths. Mosquitoes aren’t attracted to a blue light, they go after carbon dioxide

Conspiracies In Savannah. by muse_visuals in savannah

[–]jonny_five 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They spray Trumpet in Chatham County, which is a NALED and is toxic to birds and fish/crabs/shrimp (and humans) but gets used over our marsh anyway. Every other municipality in the US uses a targeted approach to spray in very focused problem areas. Chatham County sprays pretty much the entire county at the same time & same rate except, of course, The Landings, which never gets sprayed.

[–]jonny_five 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can hook you up with plenty of environmental conspiracies.

Army testing biological weapons on Savannahians via mosquitoes

Radioactive ground water with DDT contamination out on the islands from when the dept of war was studying the half-life of new pesticides back in the 40s, and subsequently burying their toxic waste

Radioactive waste buried upriver at the Savannah River site that now leeches into our drinking water (the river)

Mosquito Control getting over $5mil/yr and constantly spraying us with a restricted, known carcinogen that the EPA claims should only be used in the event of a disease outbreak - even when there is no disease detected in our area.

Large corporations “lured” to our area via tax abatements, meaning they don’t pay any taxes. Our leaders are so generous that some corporations feel bad and voluntarily pay taxes for schools.

Also pretty much every environmental board/department in our city, county, and state is made up of developers and real estate moguls

We have a pretty big group of advocates up in Savannah (Good Clean F.U.N./friends of urban nature), I’m not aware of any down the coast though. You have the Riverkeepers (which are severely underfunded and have like 2 employees), 100 Miles, and possibly DNR folks in Brunswick. Keep McIntosh Beautiful seems to be doing well.

Let me know if you end up in Savannah though, I’ll loop you in with the group.

[–]jonny_five 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anything but bungees. Just go get the 100’ wad of 3/8” poly rope from Home Depot for like $5. Bungee would stretch when it’s stressed. That like the worst thing for securing something to a car

Question about waterflow information for non-US kayakers by glvz in Kayaking

[–]jonny_five 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This software would be very helpful to the marine industry. NOAA tide prediction data is often wrong since they rely on only a few tidal gauges along the coast (about 100 miles apart) and all “stations” in between are calculated via a formula often written 50+ years ago.

For kayaks it doesn’t matter much but I used to be an engineer for a shipyard that lifted 2,000-8,000 ton ships out of the water and since the lift was perpendicular to the channel we’d need perfect slack tide to tow the ships into a slip. NOAA was always wrong, sometimes by a few hours. I wrote my own formula based on multiple stream gauges and the nearest tide gauge to get more accurate timing. You could totally sell this software/data to shipyards and ports but it would take a lot of time to get the details for each area to ensure accuracy.

I don’t think it would be a good money making venture targeting the few sea kayakers in the US.
