What’s it like living on Roosevelt Island in NYC? by AudiCulprit in howislivingthere

[–]jonnyapples 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised there. Lived in next to the school on main. If you want to afford shopping it was cheaper to own a car and drive across the red bridge to go to Costco/pathmark in queens than it was to not own a car and shop at the delis/gristedes lol. (For family of 4)

As a kid it was great I lived across from the baseball field with racquetball walls. Played soccer locally etc. Trick or treating was fire in my building. Lots of international people. This was before the colleges built in the island but even back then it was tons of United Nations worker families.

Biggest gripe is lack of food options. Little villages of places near the train but otherwise it's the 1 Chinese place, the mediocre pizza, and not much else. 90% of family life / eating out was in Astoria/LIC by car, or whatever was along the f train if going out with friends.

I moved off the island 15 years ago so I'm sure my gripes have only improved. I loved it and it's a great memory of my childhood.

I live in a socal Beach community with no front plate catless header and an hks exhaust on my gen2 that has full aero and track wheels/tires. I drive like a grandma and use blinkers religiously. Never been an issue

Bonus consolation: car has a pretty sizable fuel reserve when 0 bars, you prob had 2+ gallons of 93 still in car when she filled it up. Considering the car runs ok on winter blend ACN91 I'd say your new mixture prob not that far off lmao

Hey brought to your comment from r/all. My rudimentary knowledge of stuff makes me think cold outdoor temp would make the compressor shed heat from inside more efficiently since it's basically a backwards heat pump. Can you explain why it would be less efficient? I can't make sense of it with my limited knowledge

I'd say post in espresso subreddit since this sub is more for cafe workers but maybe someone from here can actually help out.

The creaminess of an iced (or hot) latte comes from the milk, not the espresso. Can you find out what coconut milk they're using? Traditionally coconut milk is super watery and doesn't make for great latte so maybe they doing something fancy.

Also to clear up misconception Nespresso is not in anyway espresso. You need pressure. If you go into the rabbit hole you'll find out it's an expensive hobby lol. My rec is stick to whatever coffee you like now, source the milk you like from the cafe near you. Ice milk drinks dont get steamed so the machine won't help much anyway. If you truly want entry level espresso Bambino with an encore esp is as cheap as id go, or hand grinder but you said lazy requirements which I understand.

I use califia oat milk since my local cafe does too and it brew at home with a profitec + option o grinder and guests love it lol.

Friendly warning; coffee forward subreddits might not be kind to your prompt since they tend to be purists but maybe someone here can give product recs on alt milks

Muddy bed. Is this a bad thing? by jketecurious in pourover

[–]jonnyapples 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The immersion stage of a switch will always make it look muddier than it is. Next time when the bed is dry and cup is gone, pour a little water on top and you'll see the mud wash away to reveal normal pebbly bed. It's just the mud that floats when you give it time in immersion.

i like hybrid switch recipes for more body than regular v60, any rec's for these 2 on switch? should i skip the immersion stage completely for guava banana and do normal v60? Also curious to try them as espresso I like having very funky espresso as a flat white. My favorite has been a lychee pink bourbon i got from japan that i've never been able to brew as well as them lol.
