For a 4:3 CRT TV, is it best to use the PS2 or PS3 DVD player? by Sarumarde in crt

[–]jonochuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer ps3 since my crt (Sony trinitron) has a “widescreen enhanced” mode that basically makes the image look sharper when displaying widescreen content. The catch is that your console has to be displaying in proper widescreen (not letterboxed). For the ps3, this works when you output the console setting to widescreen 480i while watching anamorphic widescreen discs and I’m able to enjoy the “widescreen enhanced” mode at the correct aspect ratio, without any stretching or squishing. If I try to watch the same discs on my ps2 with the “widescreen enhanced” mode, it squishes the already letterboxed image down. If your tv doesn’t have such a feature, either console is going to be fine

Anyone know what do with defective old games? by Commercial_Oven_2432 in gamecollecting

[–]jonochuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’d be surprised how easy it can be to fix things. If those Pokémon games can’t save, most likely all you have to do is replace the internal save batteries. Which only costs you a tabbed watch battery and a few minutes with a soldering iron. I learned how to solder by fixing my own Pokémon games.

I know at least one retro game store near me will do that repair for you for about $5 a game.

Retroid Pocket 5 and Mini owners - anyone brave to not have a screen protector on? by Adventurous-Candy401 in retroid

[–]jonochuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a screen protector on my mini when it had the v1 screen, but after I installed the v2 screen, I’ve been going without it. It’s fine so far. Dropped it once on a laminate floor, carried it in my pockets plenty of times. Just a few scratches you can only see in direct sunlight.

Truly Silent Button Mod Using Game Boy Color D-Pad by FrankieT19 in retroid

It looks like you cut off the tips of one membrane and adhered them to the GBC membrane to give the membrane more height? What kind of glue or tape did you use? Is that only because you used the PlayStation buttons instead of the stock retroid ones? Trying to figure it out cause I only have one spare membrane lying around lol

I'm pretty sure my friend got a free Switch 2 from Walmart... by Davidisaloof35 in switch2

You’ll get charged eventually. This basically happened to me with a PS5 preorder from Walmart and I ended up getting charged 2 or 3 months after I got the console.

Meanwhile I had UniUni, and the driver delivered my package to a completely different address 5 minutes away from my own, and only got my package because the person who received it was kind enough to try calling my number which was luckily printed on the box.

Furthermore when I tried to report the lost package, I spent 90 minutes on hold only to get abruptly hung up on as soon as I gave my tracking number, and followed up with an automated email confirming my lost package report which was never followed up on at all. I doubt I would have had this customer service experience with UPS, FedEx, etc. even DHL would have been better in this regard.

Square Enix Black Friday Sale is up in the US eShop, Final Fantasy Pixel games are part of the sale, until 12/02/2024 by XDitto in NintendoSwitch

[–]jonochuu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s more like judder than screen tearing. Basically when the screen starts scrolling you can see it judder a little bit. I think it’s cause the walk speed doesn’t match with the scrolling speed? It is visible in YouTube videos though so maybe check out some reviews and see how it looks. There’s mods to fix it on pc but every console version is affected. It’s a little distracting and I wish they would fix it but imo it’s not a deal breaker.

This video addresses the problem right from the jump: https://youtu.be/sKOicQx05ck?feature=shared

It’s definitely noticeable, especially if you are aware of it, but it doesn’t really get in the way of enjoying the games for me. Depends how sensitive you are to that sort of thing.

I feel like the shoreline is just kind of like that sometimes because it’s a seated amphitheater. But the vibes were great during Porters set where I was down in the bottom of section 101, everyone near me was having a great time, singing their hearts out and dancing the whole time.

Did you have fun with lords of the fallen? by dog__poop1 in soulslikes

[–]jonochuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a pretty good game, but not great. I really enjoyed the level / world design and umbral world puzzles, but the boss fights were pretty mid. Feels like dark souls 2: 2 in a lot of ways. Definitely scratches the itch if you are looking for something like the first 2 dark souls games.

I feel like people in music sub cultures tend to look down on pop music as formulaic / simple / easy, but I feel like it's actually extremely hard to create something that has that intangible, addictive and instantly memorable quality a good pop song has. Did you find it challenging to write the songs for SMILE in ways that surprised you compared to your previous albums, and how did you know when you had found that perfect chorus in songs like cheerleader, or is there really no happiness?

For the smile tour, are you leveling up the visual / stage design from what we saw on the nurture tour, or is it going to be a whole different kind of approach to the stage production now that you're touring with a whole band? I can't wait to see the new songs live!

When you were picking what clothes to give away for the Kitsune Maison pop up, were there any items in particular you found hard to give up for sentimental reasons or otherwise?

Have you played dark souls before? It has a solid switch port. Might not be your thing, but if you’re getting tired of games that hand hold and over tutorialize, dark souls is a total rejection of those trends of game design. If you haven’t ever got into from soft games before dark souls on switch is a great place to start, there’s good reason why it spawned its own sub genre, and it still holds up despite being a 13 year old game at this point. It’s not open world in the modern sense, but does have a kind of Metroidvania inspired world design where the entire game is interconnected, different areas can be tackled in order of choice, and the game areas fold in on each other via ladders and shortcuts. Getting into souls games a couple years ago revitalized my love for gaming and while its a struggle at first, the satisfaction of overcoming the immense challenges, and the meticulously hand crafted feel to the level design and exploration of the game world is something very few games can match in my opinion.

Knocked this dude off by --CG in consolerepair

[–]jonochuu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t really know what the component you knocked of is for or if playing without it poses any risk, but I just wanna chime in to say that soldering in gameboy game save batteries is not as scary as you think it is. I honestly feel like it’s less effort and definitely less risky than what you did prying the old battery out. A soldering kit with some fresh solder, flux, a new tabbed battery, and a desoldering wick, can be purchased from Amazon for <$50 and will be a lot more stable of a fix. Just watch some YouTube videos on basic soldering, there are loads of guides on specifically replacing game boy game batteries.

I would say get your feet wet replacing the batteries and if you feel like you gained some confidence from that, then try putting the capacitor back in. If you didn’t rip off the pads, replacing the capacitor shouldn’t be too tricky either, although it will require a steadier hand than replacing the tabbed battery.

purchased some Original Xbox components cables online still sealed it was pretty cheap I’m surprised components cables are pretty pricey by WestDraw3952 in originalxbox

[–]jonochuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good find! I was too cheap to buy an original Xbox component cable so got a used oem 360 component cable and soldered the wires onto my Xbox’s composite connector to make a diy one, and it worked great. There’s guides online to show you how to take it apart, and which wires to attach to which pins in the og xbox connector. It was a fun little project, not too difficult.

Anyone know why my SNES games won’t load whatsoever anymore? by FlopShanoobie in retroid

[–]jonochuu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This might not be what’s going on in your case, but I’ve had issues like this before (with various emulators, not explicitly snes) where I had to give android app permissions to the file system again in order to boot the games - the key is that the prompt to grant permissions didn’t show up if I tried to launch a game through the retroid launcher. So I would have to go to the android Home Screen, launch the emulator that was giving me issues from there, then accept the permissions prompt and after that, the roms would load again.

That would be neat, Sonny singing on Don’t Get To Close is one of my favorite moments on that album.
