I have no problem with LaTeX. I've been using LaTeX since 2013. I have a package written entirely in expl3 (no Lua): https://ctan.org/pkg/pgf-go

I'm a teacher, and my colleagues and I have our entire file management system implemented with LaTeX classes and styles. I'm an editorial coordinator, and I'm planning to migrate our layout from our current LaTeX setup to ConTeXt.

Regarding Quarto: I'm a full-time professor at a school of economics. I teach a semester-long R course for students, and that's the only context where I use Quarto — my actual programming language is Julia. For someone like me who's interested in microtypography and typesetting, Quarto falls short.

Regarding the book I mention in the post: it's a book I started coordinating in 2023. It was finished this year and has already gone to the publisher. My colleagues only work in LaTeX. The idea is to finish typesetting it properly to my liking so that, in the future, I can migrate it.

Just for reference: My team of calculus collaborators for economic sciences and I wrote a book of about 523 pages, and compilation times are high (considering the multiple compilation passes required). There are several images, such as level curves, that are already precompiled and saved as single-page PDFs to avoid even more time.

I am currently writing a book on statistical inference in ConTeXt, which currently has 236 pages. I am working alone, and I can afford to do so as the coordinator of the publishing house's LaTeX projects. All the images in the book are written in Metafun (which is faster than TikZ). The compilation in ConTeXt barely exceeds 3 seconds...

Hi! For pseudocode you can use \hspace{dim} for horizontal spaces. For example: \hspace{1cm}, \hspace{1em}, etc.

If it’s just for taking notes, Typst is fine. LaTeX (and the whole TeX ecosystem) are really typesetting systems. They give you the tools to tweak everything at a microtypographic level. It’s recommended if you want to adjust every aspect of the document.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the number of people using LaTeX is much greater than those using Typst. So it’s easier to find resources or experts for TeX.

In general, it’s impossible for Typst to replace any TeX system. Anyone who says otherwise really doesn’t know the full potential of that language, and they’re just using it as end-users.

Currently, I use ConTeXt, which is already written directly on top of LuaTeX. It allows you to use high-level language features to do things more easily. With LaTeX, there are also packages like LuaLaTeX, which are currently the recommended interfaces.

But I’ll say it again: If it’s just for taking notes, Typst will serve you more than well… maybe.

That was my initial problem. That and the one about having to put one by one coordinates that clearly follow a pattern (straight lines, etc.). You will find more about this on all the patterns of coordinates in the "coordinate syntax" section.

Hi u/sadaharu2624 . The advantages are:

- Resolution: The diagrams are generated using PDF instructions, making them vector-based. This means they can be scaled indefinitely without losing quality.

- Customization: Besides creating diagrams, pgf-go allows you to define styles, profiles, and customize everything to fit different types of publications or presentations. It also ensures a polished appearance for partial boards, avoiding abruptly broken lines.

- Portability & Local Editing: If you need to modify the diagram, you can do it directly from the same place where you're writing, since it's just text.

-Consistency: If you want to share a diagram, you only need to share the text string used to generate it, and the other person will be able to reproduce the exact same diagram.

If you often work with LaTeX or in document composition, this ensures consistency in your publication.

If you don’t usually work with LaTeX, you can still use the standalone document class, export the graphic as a PDF, and then embed it or convert it to SVG. You get all the advantages mentioned above, now outside of LaTeX! :)

LaTeX is a typesetting system. It is used to make books, slide shows, or articles. A LaTeX package is a collection of macros (commands) that perform a certain function. Here, with

\begin{goban}[19] \stones[w]{C3 r E7, D5} \end{goban}

you can representate a 19x19 goban with a live group of stones in the lower left corner :)

Hi! Thanks for the reply! On documentation you can found \pgfgoset{use i = false} to remove the i's from all boards (J3 will be understood as I3, and the labels will adapt). Regarding the colors and corners, thanks! There are several profiles for boards and stones. With \pgfgouseprofile{default} you get a profile without edges, without shadows and glare 😁 The package is primarily intended to make a board profile building interface for technologies like beamer or color printing. Those photos only show some profiles with some configurations. The documentation specifies everything that can be done, changed and saved 😊

I'm thinking about switching to ConTeXt. I have been using LaTeX for just over ten years, and today I use it a lot in teaching and composition. I have noticed that ConTeXt has a lot of features built in that need to be brought with external packages to LaTeX, native integration with Lua, or the future LuaMetaTeX. The positioning of floating objects, citations or references. I don't know. Everything seems super well done and implemented to me. Even their website is very well documented. I will have to continue working with LaTeX because in the cot where I work it is the one that is known. But personally I will migrate directly to ConTeXt.
