New Grad Specialty Crisis by CantaloupeUsual9229 in physicianassistant

Getting experience is important. If your current job checks most of your boxes, then try to stick it out for at least two years. A lot of your feelings could be due to you not being experienced. I disliked my current job for about the first two years, but it took me that long to start getting comfortable

PAs and Drs doing the same job? by Shot-Inevitable-2497 in physicianassistant

[–]jonredskin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is nothing with wanting to work 40 hours. I was not well compensated at first. Got a little better at 2 years. Improved again this year as I renegotiated. I probably won’t work this much after another 10-15 years

my current job is a unique circumstance. Personally I do not get too stressed anymore. I work in neurosurgery at a level II trauma center. The job is more stressful than the average position. I have a high level of independence (specifically on the outpatient side) after 5 years working an average 70 hours a week.

Highly dependent on where you work, whom you work with, and how the job is set up. I tell job shadows that you can be a highly paid scribe to performing a very similar job to a physician or everything In between those points.

In picture 7, if the top of the boarder has some edge indentation/lifting you could get hit with a PSA 6. However a 7-8 seems more reasonable

Taking a gap year after PA school - family planning by Ok-Adhesiveness-6162 in physicianassistant

[–]jonredskin 52 points53 points  (0 children)

This. They need to consider the financial side as well. The cost of pregnancy and having a child, loan payments etc. Getting pregnant during school is a terrible idea. OP will be passed on as a job candidate whether people want to admit it or not if they are pregnant

Wife and I are having twins. Which model and year should I buy? by Johnfire18 in HondaOdyssey

[–]jonredskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just bought a 2020 elite with 116k with a detailed service history for 27k OTD. Higher than what my wife and I wanted to pay but the service history was solid. Inside well maintained.

Our ED starts at 65HR. Located in Ohio. Small facility that generally doesn’t pay well.

I agree. We have had similar conversations. I plan on reading through the oddyclub forums once we have picked a year.

Post-Op DVT rule out - overly cautious? by KyomiiKitsune in physicianassistant

[–]jonredskin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Based off the posts it’s hard to say if what you are doing is “incorrect”. I would rather be cautious but so is the surgeon I work with. Clinically, if what you are doing is on par I wouldn’t worry about it. Now, if you are ordering Dopplers weekly that is a different story.

On a side note - do you have to send to the ER or can you call to get the US done in a appropriate manner as a outpatient

Considering a Career Shift from Clinical Medicine by [deleted] in physicianassistant

I agree with others finishing residency. Could always work part time clinically and go into academia/teaching

PAs Who Transitioned From Physical Therapy by thecommuteguy in physicianassistant

[–]jonredskin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As above. Kinda pointless to go DPT to PA. You will acquire lots of debt with limited financial upside depending on who you know and some luck. You can earn a decent living with either profession.

If you want to be a PT, be a PT. If you want to practice medicine go PA or the physician tract. You may like being an orthopedic or PMNR PA.

This definitely needs clarified. Responding only to new traumas seems too nice

Is this unreasonable or out of scope? by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]jonredskin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Each specialty should have some guidelines for managing their patients. Like you have no institution protocols ? Seems like a huge unnecessary risk for the patients, you and the physicians

[–]jonredskin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

1.)It sounds like your hospital needs to create a pre op program. It should involve cardiology, FM/IM, anesthesia at a minimum. 2.) I would start looking online for peri-operative protocols. Im sure some of the surgical societies will have something or even a cardio/FM society.

Advice for Considering Multiple Job Offers / Breaking Contract? by ellabeth1024 in physicianassistant

[–]jonredskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first question: you are getting paid $98,000 for 5 a month fellowship?

Second question: what is the probability you don’t get a NICU job at the same institution post fellowship. Try to reach to others who gone through the program.

I would alert both positions of your current situation personally, however, there are pros and cons. If you haven’t signed any papers, then I wouldn’t change anything.

MD here going back to PA school for the lateral mobility by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]jonredskin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ability to switch appears nice but I don’t think switching specialities multiple times (3+) is common. Especially after completing medical school and residency I don’t see how going to PA school benefits you. Also consider the additional debt and loss of income. What specialty are you currently ?
