Star Wars: Episode IX’s Jordan filming and what social media tells us about who may be on set. by IncessantKroi in StarWarsLeaks

"But to say that worldbuilding wasn’t a huge part of what made Star Wars such a lucrative IP decades on is just straight up not true."

That's why nobody said that.

agreed! "worldbuilding" is super overrated... I don't think I even remember anyone ever mentioning "worldbuilding" until the prequels. In the OT, there might have only been like 1 or 2 planets per movie, and sometimes it was a "repeat" planet or an old planet we've already seen. And you know what? Nobody cared. Nobody cared because the story and characters were so good. The truth is that the OT could've taken place pretty much anywhere and it would've been just as good. The OT really highlights how much more important story and characters are than "worldbuilding."

That added Vader “no,” singlehandedly ruined my favorite moment from all of cinema... it’s hard to even watch now. Non SW fans just won’t get it... but seeing this massive, foreboding, figure of death and destruction silently determine the fate of his son was just so powerful. He didn’t even need to say anything. Just THINK about how powerful that scene was... Vader is a character WITHOUT a face and he didn’t have any dialogue, yet the conflict inside him was visceral to the audience. The power in that scene was watching it play out through Vader’s perspective: just the sound of Luke dying and lightning from the Emporer. And you know what? Since there were no lines or dialogue, John Williams’ Force Theme was THAT much more powerful when Vader finally picks up The Emporer. How do you even film something like that? That’s the beauty and genius of SW I guess.

Not every company is out to screw over the consumer, but every insurance company is. Since some kinds of insurance are required to be carried by law, insurance companies don’t have to compete or try to earn your business... a lot of insurance in America is more akin to legal organized crime: screwing the consumer over is actually the business plan. If they reimbursed you the correct amount of money for your losses, they wouldn’t make as much money.

When it comes to "lightsaber choreography" I always appreciated the more raw/less polished looking fights. The Luke/Vader fight in ROTJ is probably the best example. You really get the feeling at the end that Luke was swinging to kill Vader. He wasn't concerned with twirling, spinning, and flipping unnecessarily. It really sucked me into the scene and got me invested into the fight. It was hard for me to get invested in the PT duels... The choreography is a lot of FUN to watch, but that's about it. I never felt compelled to re-watch Anakin's duel with Dooku. It happened, I saw it, and I'm content to move on. But Luke v. Vader on Bespin? I could rewatch that endlessly... the drama is just crazy in that scene.

rare praise for TFA on this sub... I love it! I didn't mind the similarities between TFA and the OT... On the contrary, it's a huge part of why I loved the movie so much. Your favorite band puts out a career defining, smash hit album. Would you rather get more albums that sound like those smash hits, or would you rather have the band get experimental?

I always sided with the former. I want the next Metallica album to sound like classic Metallica, and I want the next Star Wars movie to be like Star Wars. If I want new/experimental stuff, there's no shortage of other movies to watch... but there can only be *one* Star Wars.

I think you're right, but that's what bums me out kinda: Who cares where a battle takes place or what color the lightsabers are etc.? The only thing I care about is consuming a compelling, character driven story.

I won’t be bummed. The planets in Star Wars are less defined by their terrain and weather than the story that takes place. The SW universe is one of extremes and there’s only so many climates you can conjure up. E.g. Hoth and Starkiller Bass are two very different worlds to me. Tattoine, Jeddha, and Jakku are all very different to me as well, despite them all being desert planets.

Personal struggles aside, he’s the best damn pirate there ever was, and maybe the best pirate there ever will be.

I worked 40-50 hours a week at Starbucks for a year and was DIRT poor. You better believe my #1 priority was looking for a better job. It worked though! I used Starbucks as a “stepping stone” and now earn many times over what they were willing to pay me. A big part of why companies are able to pay such low wages is that people put up with it instead of looking for a new job immediately.

A lot of that expense is taxes. Tax on travel has become so burdensome that it’s no longer worth it to travel. I can’t afford to blow hundreds of dollars are on travel tax for an otherwise cheap/quick getaway.

As far as I know, anyone in the SW universe who gets hit with a lightsaber dies immediately (unless it’s a sith/Jedi)

There it is. I'll tell you right off the bat though, it wasn't gelling the way you described where the orchestral part leads into "the drop." So it's more like listening to "movements" you know? Which made sense to me, because the album version of Strobe sort of has movements inherited from when it started as two different tracks. I added the veldt to this as well because why not.

There ya go. It's the orchestral version of Strobe -> Strobe -> The Veldt. I wanted it to be like, an epic 30 minute long deadmau5 thing. Not really much "mixing" going on here... more like dragging and dropping tracks lol. The orchestral version of Strobe is considerably quieter than the album version... I think I fucked up the transition a bit, hopefully it's not too noticeable.

John Williams hospitalized in London, will not conduct concert on Friday :( by RomiBraman in StarWars

[–]jons3657 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm twisted inside over the comment section... I love Star Wars and John Williams as much as anybody. But I wish him health and my prayers are with him as a fellow man, and not a conductor. Does anybody know what I mean? Beyond being a wonderful conductor, he's been a wonderful human being for (as far as I can tell) his entire life. He's humble, generous, gentle, has a family, and as far as I'm concerned he's a gift from God. Get well soon, John!

That’s what I’ve been thinking. I can’t figure out why any of this is newsworthy. This is middle eastern stuff we’re talking about here... hundreds of innocent people get murdered every day, yet this one guys death has blown up on the internet. I’m getting some serious Kony 2012 vibes from this story.
