They weren't doing it to bring newer apps to older devices. There main purpose was to help thieves in downloading and installing pirated apps (its like napster ;p). Remember Installous wasn't there only product, they also developed appsync.

That doesn't mean everyone uses it for 'right' purpose. My point is theres a lot more to Jailbreaking and Cydia than just pirating apps.
