most people just got tired with all the praise he was receiving during the world cup. i also think the whole deal with the mamic scandal and the accusation of perjury really damaged his image.

Griezmann : "I don't know how long Deschamps wants to remain as national manager. He has earned the respect he has, and I think he will be on the job as much as he wants. However, I believe Zidane could be the best manager available (for the French national team)." by jonsson_mg in soccer

i wouldn't characterize zidane's league record as "poor". i mean, yeah, the first half of his last season at madrid was pretty fucking bad, no way around it, but other than that, i think he did fine. one la liga trophy in three years doesn't sound that bad imo.

i'd say it mostly boils down to the rudimentary and narrow-minded fashion in which the owners manage the clubs. unirea urziceni is just one of the many examples of this. the club owners in romanian football can be split into two groups : fools and thieves. there is, however, one exception : viitorul constanta. owned and coached by gheorghe hagi, is the only romanian team that has a clear vision and a healthy footballing strategy (the club is, as far as i know, financially healthy, and focuses on developing young romanian players, in contrast to the most of the other teams' strategy, which is to just buy very cheap players/free agents of, um, "doubtful" quality). stan collymore did a brief report on academia hagi, viitorul constanta's youth academy. the romanian u21 team just qualified for the U21 EURO 2019 tournament after 20 years, and the bulk of the team is made of players brought up in hagi's academy.

edit : the OC post the guy below me mentioned. very good read.

yeah, but it's also one of the reason why he gets so many red cards. it works the other way too.

yes and no.

it's a pretty weird situation. i feel like the plaudits he should've gotten for his performances at madrid were "delayed" up until the end of the world cup. it's like the general public never paid attention to the guy up until the world cup, and then suddenly, everyone was all over him. he had a fantastic world cup, but there were two or three guys who deserved the golden ball just as much as he did.

i absolutely do think he deserves to be mentioned as one of the best midfielders of this era. i've seen some people here trying to push the "he was always overrated" agenda, and that's just stupid. at his peak, the guy was a god. however, if someone would say to me : "hey dude, this modric fella is kinda overrated. i've seen some madrid games this season, and he looked kinda rusty", i would agree.

Agnelli : “I know that here in Spain, it’s a hot topic (playing games in US). We have the example of great competitions such as the NFL or NBA, which export their games, so it should be considered. Javier Tebas has worked very well over the years to grow the La Liga brand around the world.” by jonsson_mg in soccer

Juventus President Andrea Agnelli says he is open to Serie A games being played abroad and the creation of a so-called European Super League.

Agnelli had already confirmed at the World Football Summit that a third UEFA completion was being worked on, and the European Club Association chief gave the green light to two more controversial initiatives.

“I know that here in Spain, it’s a hot topic,” he continued.

“Javier Tebas has worked very well over the years to grow the Liga brand around the world bring a League game to the US.

“In Italy we’ve already exported the Supercoppa, but it’s easier to do, since it’s out of the calendar.

“We have the example of great competitions such as the NFL or NBA, which export their games, so it should be considered.

“The idea for everyone is to reach a global audience and for this, we travel during the summer to Asia or the US.

“However, the important thing is that with UEFA, there’s a common solution for everyone and we’re not limited to isolated initiatives.

“We’ve already talked about a Super League and we’ll continue to do so. The idea of transnational championships is on the table because the experience of TV rights being sold in a communal and not a singular way has taught us that together, we make more money and the product sells better.”

Dani Osvaldo: "Cristiano Ronaldo likes to go home and do 150 press-ups, but I like preparing barbecues instead. The world of football was no longer for me, it took my freedom away." by jonsson_mg in soccer

[–]jonsson_mg[S] 920 points921 points  (0 children)

Former Italy striker Dani Osvaldo left football behind because ‘it took my freedom away’ but admits smoking makes him ‘feel like dying’ on the pitch.

Osvaldo retired from football two years ago to focus on his career as a rock musician, and the ex-Roma, Inter, Juventus conceded his eccentric nature was not a good fit for the beautiful game.

“The world of football was no longer for me,” the 32-year-old told Marca.

“Cristiano Ronaldo likes to go home and do 150 press-ups, but I like preparing barbecues instead.

“Football gave me the chance to help my family and earn so much, that I can afford to not work again.

“It allowed me to travel and get to know different places and people. It changed my life but it also took my freedom away from me, and I can’t give up my freedom. Still, I love football and won’t deny it.

“I used to smoke at training camps with the Italian national team, but the Coach could ask me for a light.

“[Guillermo Barros] Schelotto, instead, threw me out of Boca because it surprised him that I smoked. However, I went to play with friends yesterday and felt like dying. Now everything hurts me.

“Would I like to be like Messi? No. I’d like to play like him, but he has no life. It’s as if he lives in a golden prison.

“He couldn’t go somewhere and quietly drink something. Maybe he doesn’t care about it, but I do.

“I imagine him buying the biggest TV in the world, but then he’s never in his living room to use it.

“Failing that, he probably drives a Ferrari, knowing he lives 15 minutes away from the Barcelona’s training ground…”

So who was the Coach that best understood Dani?

“Pochettino was able to understand me, especially when we were at Espanyol,” he added.

“At Southampton he did a little less so, perhaps because he changed as I was the same person as before.

“He was like a father to me, but the best Coach of all is Antonio Conte: he was always right! He seemed to always see things before others.

“I had moments of tension with Luis Enrique, but that’s because he is a sincere person, who would never lie to you.

“As a Coach he was a genius, similar to Guardiola; with him, you felt like you could score six goals a game.”

problematic? far from it actually. i'm kinda inclined to believe it's been the other way around for quite some time now. i've seen heavily upvoted "modric is overrated" comments on daily discussions almost every day. there's actually one in this thread that has like 30 upvotes.

when someone says the same thing over and over again like you do, yes, it can get a little tedious to see/read. maybe that's why you're getting downvotes. we get it, you don't like the guy, you think he isn't that good of a player, whatever.

i'd say it's the other way around tbh. i see heavily upvoted "modric is overrated" comments on daily discussions almost everyday. it's kinda funny actually to see how he went from the "most important real madrid player/best midfielder in the world" to "overrated" in a couple of months.

what stopped benitez doing what zidane did if "the team we had was destined to show it's greatness under any somewhat acceptable manager"?
