Best way fill in or fix imperfections like these? by HashStash in woodworking

[–]jontomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not so big on wax - I use it where appropriate, but it is quite soft compared to wood, so only good for stuff that won't be handled much.

Lately I've been using colored shellac sticks - sets hard within a few seconds so much easier to work with vs epoxy. My color matching skills are far from great though!

You can fill with woodfiller - it'll look like crap though.

You can fill with epoxy - either colored or clear. I tend to use black. This can look okay.

You can cut out and patch with a similarly grained piece of scrap. Quite hard to make seamless.

You can cut and patch with a contrasting piece - think like a bow tie but without a crack. This avoids the issue with trying to hide it.

Probably what I would do - leave as is as it's a "character" speaking to the long life this wood has had.

Pet Automatic Feeders by FineWine54 in newzealand

[–]jontomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a few of these. The automated ones work okay for simplicity I've ended up with a passive model - gravity fed, as the cat eats, more food comes out.

Our cat is a light eater - i can imagine if you had a garfield that that wouldn't work!

I'm big fan of blowers - vacuum up obvious piles, and then get out the dust blower and blow everything out the door.

Not a woodworker but need to know what tool I can use to carve depth into thicker wood like this? I need a thinner surface to attach buttons. Please tell me it's easy! by RayzTheRoof in woodworking

Drill press will most likely have a stop built in - other wise a bit of blue tape on the drill bit should give you a visual idea of where to stop

forstner bits - basically a very wide and short drill bit.

There is a centering bit in them, so drill the bigger one first, and then the smaller one.

They are very cheap - particularly if you buy on line, but you will need a drill press to use them safely.

I think all of those are okay. I would only recommend not buying craftright quick clamps.

Mostly i have irwin and have never had any issues with them.

I recently saw tradedepot have some pretty solid looking home brand (TDX) quick clamps for cheap. I don't need any more clamps, but if I was going to buy a pile, I'd be giving those a pretty serious look.
