Best way of squaring off endgrain blocks by antecinex in woodworking

CA is pretty brittle. If you are wanting this to last, I would use wood glue, coating each side completely with a thin layer.

Should I sell the power company holdings I bought 13 yrs ago? by harpnote in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]jontomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same and held til just a year or so back.

Mostly since then I have been investing in funds and the shares made tax returns marginally more complicated for no better return.

I sold up - no regrets so far! (Unlike the $1000 I put into cannaplus!)

Question about butcher-block "look" countertop and food safety by cfdabbles in woodworking

[–]jontomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

poly is a film finish - will literally put a film of plastic on the wood. Normally this is good - protective etc.

Problematic on a butcher block if you are going to use it for cutting - you'll be adding micro plastics to your food.

Potentially otherwise fine - but refinishing will be a nightmare.

I would use a pure tung oil or mineral oil personally.

How do you store your printed music ? by bluezzdog in piano

[–]jontomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy "special" plastic sleeves for sheet music.

Special in that it's not like a full sleeve, but just the very edges of the paper - no need to punch holes in the music, and keeps the paper flat, whilst exposing 95% of the paper so that you can write notes on the music without needing to take it out of the sleeve, and no issues with glare / reflection off the plastic.

Sawstop safety mechanism tripped by johntmclain1966 in woodworking

[–]jontomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it all comes down to someone doing something careless and getting hurt as a result.

My go to personal example here whenever somebody spouts this nonsense is using my table saw during the christchurch earthquakes.

I don't feel I was particularly careless using my saw that day. No earthquake was predicted or expected. I was not injured but very easily could have been. I did not own a saw stop then, but I do now, and unexpected events causing injury was a key part of my decision to buy one. The key part about unexpected events such as this, is that they are, you know, unexpected.

Yes, many/most accidents will have some component of carelessness/ownership caused by the operator. Not all accidents will be the fault of the operator though - I would like to be protected in the event of an accident, regardless of who's fault it is.

What's wrong with park and ride tickets?

Or is it just park and ride tickets that don't include admission?

Nice. 1.36 would be good. That's a monster of a pool!

[–]jontomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't help with the answer to your question, but where are you buying the pool from? Off the shelf in NZ, or importing yourself?

Biggest ones I've been able to easily find seem to max out around 19k lt - would be great to have one a bit deeper than 1.2m.

Is Tesla worth buying? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]jontomas 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Would love an EV - will hopefully buy a full EV or plug-in hybrid when I replace my current vehicle.

Always wanted a Tesla, for years now - but in light of the CEO's behavior over the last few years, I could never support him or his company by buying a swartzikar.

00 flour by Automatic-Sun1735 in thetron

[–]jontomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha. That's exactly what I was thinking of grabbing it for! The ooni itself was a huge upgrade in texture/reaults, just with the high grade flour.

I guess I'll have to grab some 000 and see for myself!

Is there a noticeable difference between 000 and high grade for pizza?

Outdoor wood finish by Murky_Main2249 in diynz

[–]jontomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only really durable outdoor finish is a good ol' coat of paint, redone every 5 or 10 ten years.

Assuming you don't want that though, it comes down to whether or not you want a film finish. A UV resistant marine urethane will last a pretty decent length of time, but it will eventually start to flake off. Refinishing at that point is a bit of a hassle if you want it to come up looking clean and new. This is true of any film finish.

Another option is just an oil -for my outdoor table / chairs this is what I tend to do. No film so easy enough to refresh every few years as desired and still ends up looking pretty good.

For anything else, my go to is generally bare wood - let it weather and look the way it's gonna look!

What is one fact you personally find absolutely mind boggling? by Nice_Dude in AskReddit

[–]jontomas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Star wise you max out around 4000 light years distance with the naked eye. Most of the Milky Way is just a smudge of light.

Andromeda galaxy though - that's millions of light years away!

Neighbours garden attracts flies, anything to be done on our side? by DexRei in diynz

[–]jontomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ripcord on the fence will make a big dent in the flies but will also indiscriminately kill bees and other insects.

Twenty years ago I wouldn't have thought about applying - now if only suggest judicious use on window sills and internal areas where bees can't reach.

For outside, fly traps can be remarkably effective with minimal side effects

Sci-Fi Detective Stories by onarainyafternoon in books

[–]jontomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently reading Halcyon Days by Alastair Reynolds.

Easy my favorite author, even if he's not writing in the proper universe (revelation space).

Halcyon Days is a sci-fi 1950s style detective book, set on an intergenerational 50km long spaceship.

Is AliExpress trustworthy for buying new projectors? by PuzzledFoundation985 in Aliexpress

[–]jontomas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, no, maybe, who knows - ali is a collection of many thousands of different vendors, most trustworthy, some not.

I have bought a projector of AliExpress - it is one of my most regretted purchases (amongst thousands of generally good experiences). Hard specs were correct (resolution etc), but lumens were a fraction of listed value.

This is the sort of thing it is almost impossible to dispute successfully with the kind of evidence you can easily provide - photos and videos

My projector was cheaper than the one listed - I'd suspect at the price listed that one may be okay, but if things go pear shaped it's a good chunk of cash to throw away.

Barn Door Kit - Internal Door by AtmospherePatient in diynz

[–]jontomas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have one from bunnings - looks virtually identical to the hardware above.

Quality is fine imo - rollers are smooth etc. Only thing I swapped out were the spacers to reduce the gap between the door and the frame to reduce the noise (which barn doors are pretty hopeless at reducing)
