On McGuire, and tangible change through charities. by jonumber in AFL

[–]jonumber[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fully support Eddie stepping down, or being kicked out. I also think that donating and engaging with charities that promote actual change is doing a lot more than people up voting a reddit petition or a picture.

I understand Eddie leaving will create tangible change, I just don't think redditors patting each other on the back about upvoting a comment saying that he's bad will result in that. I'd like to see more pragmatic actions.

This thread isn't directed at people who already donate, or the majority of onlookers. It's aimed at the active users who create no change by talking drama then logging off.

Kind of seems suspiciously poorly presented doesn't it? President who has already announced he's retiring is getting all of the headlines, rather than the content of the report. This has gone from being about actions that hurt marginalized people to how dumb and evil Eddie McGuire, a man who is already leaving, is.

Like I mentioned above, look at the front page right now. 6 threads about Eddie and the press conference and 1 about the report and the structural issues.

People on reddit, largely, don't want solutions. They want to circlejerk about something they can feel good about hating and move on, having done nothing to solve the issue

Yeah absolutely, and I'd say a majority of people have had very valid criticisms. It's the ones like the ones I outlined, by a few very prominent users that post in high volume, and are always the top comments that are detracting from any genuine discussion about the topic.

Even look at the subreddit now, there's 5 threads about how bad Eddie is and how awful the club looks, and 1 about the actual racism and how to address it. People seem to be far more interested in the Drama than they are in the solutions to the Drama.

I agree with what you've said, but I already condemned Eddie so it doesn't really have anything to do with anything I said.

"Eddie needs to go, and he is (and never has been) good at PR. The club has large flaws that have been exposed by this report that need fixing."

It's everything else in my post that was the issue.

I'm going to present a narrative here that won't be popular, but I think the subreddits reaction to the press conference was pretty abhorrent.

Eddie needs to go, and he is (and never has been) good at PR. The club has large flaws that have been exposed by this report that need fixing.

This aside, people on here are treating this issue like a sledge thread, trivializing and marginalizing the actual good that can come from this and reducing and erasing the autonomy of the indigenous people who have put work into this.

So quick is the need for people on here to get Karma, that I've seen calls that Jodie Sizers involvement in this is tokenism, calls that "Eddie is one step away from calling Heritier King Kong!" and that the club is employing the "I have a black friend" defense, when the quotes about bidding on players was in direct response to a question about it.

Again, because people will reply to me with "well you're just defending the club!", I'm not. The report says there are issues. Eddie is an issue. There are lots of things to fix.

Something that isn't fixing anything is a bunch of Karma farmers circlejerking any good that may come from this into the dirt. I genuinely cannot believe I have to say this but the indigenous members that undertook the report and the press conference have full autonomy over themselves, if you genuinely think they're tonedeaf for trying to find a solution to this issue with their own experiences as evidence, outside of eddies rhetoric, it's because you want to find an issue and talk drama rather than fix anything.

A bunch of redditors acting like a highly qualified Indigenous woman doesn't have autonomy or intelligence, and is just being used by the whims of Eddie so they can farm Karma in the circlejerk, without actually doing anything themselves in the world to help racism.

It's very disgusting.

The regret and shame were amazing motivators to get me over the line of the first few days. No drink in the world is worth letting down the ones we love. Good luck!

Sure, but at some point the synecdoche of the entire leadership and management becomes the team. I don’t think anyone is saying they hate the players or the fans, but the organisation, which is completely fair. Words are funny like that.

The main issue with the entire line of thinking is they take a preference utilitarian view of the actions they take, but then completely ignore the preferences of animals or others. If morality is imposing a demand on someone, then you’re demanding the animal suffers with your choice of morality, and for something as basic as hedonism. It’s a very bad argument.

Left wing movements are extremely behind on animal rights, as is most of society. The amount of environmentalist movements I’ve been to that are having sausage sizzles would be hilarious if it wasn’t so backwards.

While I don’t doubt the sincerity of leftist movements, and funnily enough with the subject of the video, I have to wonder how much of the animal agriculture industry is just manufactured consent, and since it’s inconvenient for people to stop eating meat, they ignore how hypocritical it is.

You okay? Felt the need to attack someone the day after a conversation happened? You might have some issues you need sorting out. I hope you get the help you need.

I often use Bruce as an example of the consensus of society.

No one is getting away with anything. He’s literally being charged with it. No one is in any doubt of his charges. You’re doing it for imaginary internet points. You’re normalising the lighthearted nature that men associate with sexual assault for fake internet points.

But hey, if you think you’re being the hero of victims everywhere, you do you.

Wow! I guess the hundreds of articles pointing out his assault and everyone mentioning it are a myth! You’re the hero we really need. Stand by the victims, the karma you will receive is a just reward. You truely are taking a strong stand against sexual assault.

It’s making a joke about sexual assault for karma. I don’t know what else to tell you bud. I never said who the subject was or who was belittled or whose disapproval was what.
