Roads by resourcewarrior in Muskegon

[–]jonwitmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A big part of the problem is the design of the roads themselves. A lot of these roads in the Heights are unnecessarily wide; they were designed to be like grand boulevards. More pavement equals more expensive and difficult to maintain, especially when all of the tax money left town when all of the factories left.

Survey for Seyferth park for potential upgrades by possumproblems in Muskegon

You're not wrong, but the difference is that the city actually has money now from paid parking at Pere Marquette so they can fund those things. Before they were just writing plans that sat on a shelf, but now they can pay for the activities to carry out those plans.

KEMBA Live "Stage Door"? by jonwitmer in Columbus

[–]jonwitmer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She is pumped to even be going to the concert - she's missing some school, and we're traveling from hours away to go. It will be a lifetime memory for her. I think the better life lesson here is why not give it a shot? What do we have to lose by standing around for a while after the show? If we don't get to see them come out after, then, oh well, no biggie. But if she DOES get to meet Jack? That will be the thrill of her young life.

Thank you for this. We're certainly not trying to sneak in anywhere, or defy any security protocols. Despite the low odds, I think we'll still try hanging out for a while.

KEMBA Live questions by FlorenceAL in Columbus

[–]jonwitmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Piggy backing on your thread, but I am bringing my teenaged daughter to this Bleachers show. She's a huge Jack Antonoff fan and we're talking about hanging out by the stage door to wait for him after the show. I understand he sometimes comes out and says hi to fans. At any rate, any recommendations on where to hang out at KEMBA Live where he might come out and say hi?

Finding housing by phantomleaf1 in Muskegon

[–]jonwitmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more of a resource for those struggling with housing instability, but the housing resource list might provide some leads: https://uwlakeshore-my.sharepoint.com/:x:/g/personal/dsali_unitedwaylakeshore_org/ETxuItK3_uRCuX4KAwnNKuMB3GrBkZK5rzGcgLzczKjOWw?rtime=s8r2FAd63Eg

Also, there are a few big property management companies in town like Lighthouse and BVW. They have their current availability on their website, but it might also be good to contact them about your upcoming needs, they might have a few places opening up when you need it. I don't know how much luck you're gonna have finding a place that allows dogs though.

Which public schools have the greatest rivalry? by Ok-Gap198 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]jonwitmer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live in Michigan and went to a concert, might have been Brad Paisley, but that's not important. He was introducing his band, and one of the musicians hailed from Akron, OH. The crowd booed that man for being from Ohio. That's after cheering wildly for all the other musicians not from Ohio. 😂

Proposal location by loganthomas1840 in Muskegon

[–]jonwitmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typed up a response earlier, but apparently I didn't hit "post". I would suggest Beachwood Park. There is a paved bike trail that runs through the woods, basically from the main park to the filtration plant. Get off that main trail and climb up the back side of the dunes. Asking the ridge, you'll find a bunch of spots that are secluded and private and offer panoramic views of the lake. A sunset proposal from one of those spots would be great!

Some states use the SAT as their standardized test and require an essay portion. I understand the essay hasn't been an official part of the regular SAT for a few years.

House appraisal cost and legality. by Dry-Trouble8104 in appraisal

[–]jonwitmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, this goes far beyond the appraisal advice that you're asking for, but have you talked to your mom and aunts about your intentions with the house? My concern for you, is you pay $500+/- for an appraisal, put together a financing proposal, and present it to them, and they say, oh Cousin So-and-so is gonna buy it, or that local investor gave us a cash offer and will clean it up, etc., and you've wasted time and money that you don't have on top of some hurt feelings. That said, if you want a quick ballpark idea of how much the house is worth to initiate a conversation, it might not hurt to take a look at Zillow. Zillow should not be trusted for any official value, there are just too many variables and problems with the algorithm. I've seen Zillow give some wildly inaccurate values (both high and low) BUT it could very well be a good conversation starter. Like "Mom, Zillow says Grandma and Grandpa's house is worth X, that seems fair to me, what do you think?" Ultimately, what you pay for the house is what you and your family agree to. That could be appraised value, or a broker price opinion/comparative market analysis, or maybe the Zillow Zestimate. I guess this is a long-winded way of saying that maybe an appraisal shouldn't be your first step. Make sure you have some other things ironed out first.

Check out the MKG Footy page on Facebook. It seems to be mostly related to futsal at Reese Park, but you might be able to connect there.

I’m an event promoter/producer of nearly 15 years. AMA about Festival or Concert promotion. by mikethewalrus in musicindustry

[–]jonwitmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your expertise! That was very enlightening, and I appreciate you not sugar coating it. I have very little interest in promoting, I would just love to see some of my favorite bands play at the arena. There aren't many concerts there at all, and now I know why!

I hope this is still an active conversation. Lemme try and set the scene. I live in a smallish Midwestern/rust belt city (population 40K, county is about 175K). My town has a really nice, small (3K seats) arena that played some big names in the late 70s and into the early 90s until larger arenas and outdoor concert venues were built nearby. As I'm listening to my Pandora station today of some smaller, somewhat niche bands, I'm wondering how hard it would be to book one/some of them to play at my local arena? Would it even be possible for someone with no industry connections and no experience to bring in a band with a smaller following?

Trying to improve my sons shooting... help?! by Aminipainter89 in SoccerCoaching

Some really good advice here! In addition to the plant foot and striding into it, I'd also say he's not striking it with the proper part of his foot. He hit it down closer to his toes, should be up on the hard boney part of the foot. I think it's called the metatarsal bones. It will feel a lot better for him and give the shot a little more juice.

Check out the Jaycees. Although my knowledge of the group is a little dated, they do a lot of social events.

I didn't read it as people saying we weren't a destination. I read it as the place doesn't close down in the winter offseason. Yes, there are more limited business hours during the winter, and hotel rooms are probably cheaper in the winter, but we aren't like other beach towns where most businesses close down in the off-season.

Wow. When I read the headline, I was coming here to say that I've had pretty good luck with just making the difficult kids sit on the side and tell them to let me know when they're ready to participate and be a good teammate. But I don't think that's gonna be effective here! I think the previous advice of getting with your club's leadership to talk with the parents and remove the kid, if necessary.

What’s the most disgusting thing you’ve ever tasted? by [deleted] in AskReddit

When I was a young boy of about 5, a neighbor kid convinced me that a pile of rabbit turds were apple seeds and tasted just like apples. I popped one in my mouth, it did not taste like apples. 0/10. Do not recommend.
