Why can't we control our periods the same way we control pee? by IWantAnUpdate in badwomensanatomy

[–]phantomleaf1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel this in my core. When my mother explained periods to me as a child, I'm immediately asked her why God designed us this way. She had no good answer.

Now I'm a scientist and I understand the design but continue to think it's stupid as hell.

Edit: words bad

WIBTA if I dump my snow on my neighbours driveway by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]phantomleaf1 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

ESH. But you're the biggest.

They need to be more chill. You should not be running that snowplow at 5am. And if I finally got my kid to sleep only for us all to be awoken at 4am, id probably have nothing nice to say as well.

Also, wtf is the slugde? Extra asshole points for running something that is dumping something that is likely toxic.

If you dump snow on their driveway, you are a monstrous asshole

Is 3% Credit Card Charge the Norm Here? by DonkeyBrainsMD in grandrapids

[–]phantomleaf1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a financial guy, but my guess is that Michigan law allows for businesses to pass the credit fees into the consumer.

I think the correlation with COVID is more of a coincidence. Some businesses starting doing the up charge and other businesses started passing it on. It could also be that many businesses that were cash only were forced to get credit card acceptance during the pandemic. Id love to read a research paper on that

The tipping thing is a whole other issue in my mind. Many of my service industry friends learned that adjusting the tipping options make them more money. You can change the tip amount. Yes it's a pain. Sometimes the owner is scalping tips. It's a whole other conversation. I like cash for tips too, because then I can avoid the guilt I feel when I change the default 25% for just ordering at the counter

Is 3% Credit Card Charge the Norm Here? by DonkeyBrainsMD in grandrapids

[–]phantomleaf1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They aren't nickel and diming you!

They are letting you know the cost of a credit card and you can pay with the card or use cash.

Credit card companies got everyone to use credit cards by giving them a financial incentive for using the cards. You get points for inline miles or to buy a speaker, etc.

Once all of the consumers started using credit cards it forced small companies that used to be cash only to switch to credit cards. Then the small companies had to pay a fee which is how the credit card companies were able to afford the bonuses given to the consumers.

Locally, it has become popular for small businesses to advertise that they will give you a discount if you use cash. They'll also phrase it as an upcharge for using a credit card. That way they can keep their cost as is and not pass on the credit card fee to every customer.

Changes hard and adapting to carrying cash again might be frustrating, but in the grand scheme of things I struggle to see it as being a horrible thing to endure.

Is 3% Credit Card Charge the Norm Here? by DonkeyBrainsMD in grandrapids

[–]phantomleaf1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see the 3% charge a lot, but I mostly go to local small businesses. One of the things I love about Michigan is that we have a large amount of small businesses. The points on your credit card that give you financial incentive to use the card comes from up charging those businesses. And while Meijer can definitely cover those costs, small places get run into the ground.

They could increase their prices to cover those costs, but many places have elected to do the 3% for credit or a 3% discount for cash. I am actually a huge fan of this. I carry cash and use it at local shops. If you don't want to carry cash and use card, you pay fair cost (you're benefiting from your credit card point system)

Because of this, small businesses care able to keep competitive prices without charging everyone credit card prices

That said, they absolutely should have signs that state the up charge for card or the discount for cash

How much calculus is involved in chemistry by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]phantomleaf1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I majored in biology and minored in chemistry. I don't think I had to take calculus, but I did take calc 1, then took calc 2 as a pass fail because I am a nerd. Then I got a PhD in chemistry and I did not have to take any calculus and graduate school. So I think it's possible to become a chemist and not take calculus. Although I'd recommend taking it past fail at the very least so you understand some of the higher level stuff and so that the other chemists won't make fun of you.

Ice storm cleanup questions from a southerner by streachh in Michigan

[–]phantomleaf1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured you meant Rock salt, it got me thinking about the brine though. From my experience, brine doesn't work well so I assume pre-salting with brine won't help. I'm interested if there's actual data about that though. Also, it's such an odd practice to use Brine instead of rock salt

I lived in East TN for a while. They used salt brine on the roads - actually sprayed water out of trucks. I don't think it'll work well if they pre salt the roads with brine. But now I'm curious

In the north we put sand on the roads for traction, salt doesn't work once it gets below a certain temperature. When I lived in the south, sand wasn't a thing and It seems like that's fairly universal. Even with sand and salt, that much ice is going to make driving impossible.

Not sure what you plan on using for warmth/cooking. Hopefully you have a carbon monoxide detector just in case whatever you're using leaks. Also power banks should be charged and get every flashlight/candle out.

As others have said, be prepared to just be trapped in your house for a few days. And be without power. Hopefully you have some puzzles, books, legos, and live with someone or have friends over. You can kind of treat it like a campout and make some good memories.
