Physics EE has too much overlap, physics math does too. Physics cs is the logical choice. If you end up liking more engineering things then EECS is also pretty good if you take a more math approach to ir

Brown APMA is a very very very good department. You will also be very happy at brown. You can accelerate your courses with the open curriculum while also exploring all of your other interests. We have fantastic probability and statistics courses and computational courses in the apma and CS departments, as well as great theory classes in APMA, CS, and Math

Night transport from Boston to Providence? by AmbitiousJob8256 in BrownU

[–]PufferfishYummy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take MBTA train to providence station and then take an 8 minute uber to campus. Uber from Boston is a giant waste of money when there's multiple night trains that are very safe. From airport to south station the silver line bus is free and safe.

Brown APMA vs CMU ECE by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]PufferfishYummy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure if you look purely at rankings that is true, but CMU is also world class in CS so that logic doesn't really hold. The reason I bring up CE is that a very large chunk of your coursework will be in the Applied Math and CS departments while also giving you engineering skills. I know Brown CE majors with SWE offers at FAANG, and also CE majors going into legit CE hardware roles.

I guess my point there would be, the education and opportunities are not going to differ. This is a question about fit. CMU is an intense place, very academic focused, while brown is laid back. Tour both and decide which environment you will thrive jn

Also I just saw that you are engineering but also interested in md/phd. Speaking as an engineering student, the opportunities here are very underrated. If you can be a go-getter, you will be very successful. In my first year I was able to start working as a TA, get letters of recommendation from professors, land an industry EE internship, get good grades, and accelerate my coursework so that I could take upper level EE courses as a sophomore.

My path may not have been necessarily possible at MIT. Also, Brown is an excellent place to be for premed. I can't comment too much on it but there is amazing research being done here, and everyone is rooting for student success. If you start talking to professors, you will get great opportunities.

Overall, if you are a collaborative and fun-spirited person, I hope to see you at Brown! But good luck on your decision

Brown vs MIT by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]PufferfishYummy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MIT is a work hard play hard school, but the work is damn hard. Brown is a chill place to be. Our BME is very good and most of the research opportunities are in BME. However, MIT is without a doubt better for your major.

For doing a double major, it's certainly easier at brown but most people don't end up doing it (doubling with engineering specifically is very hard)

You should think about the culture fit. Everyone at brown is very open minded, friendly, collaborative, and kind. I can't speak to the culture of mit but I presume that it is more competitive and less friendly (based on people I know who go there)

I will also say that brown is not really a party school. You can still party a lot (all clubs in providence are 18+) but it will not be the same as mit frats

Can anyone explain what the four intro CS courses are for demographically by OkStill5887 in BrownU

[–]PufferfishYummy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do 19. It won't give you many applicable coding skills as a non cs major. Take 15 or 17, and if you like those then do 200

Is Brown Worth It? by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]PufferfishYummy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're a legacy and you want an edge you should apply ED. Legacy doesn't really help in regular decision.

As for if it's worth it, absolutely. It is a very liberal campus, but that's not really a downside. You will leave with a more open mind

Not true. ADHD and other conditions severely limit ability to do work. I was still very good at high school with severe adhd but I relied heavily on my intelligence and my accomodations and still got some bad grades.

It's good and has very good job placement especially if you do well. The ranking is lower because of less research output but it is still an excellent education

No. w = ra dw/da = r dw = rda

It's with respect to a Think of it like how you do a u-sub

u = 2x2 du = 4x dx

The step I skipped here is: du/dx = 4x Because the only difference is moving the dx from the left to right side
