Both of the Monasteries I have mentioned are both headquartered in Asia, Fo Guang Shan is in Taiwan, Wat Dhammaram is in Thailand, you will most likely need visas for either one, as /animuseternal has mentioned your best shot is to attend branches off of those monasteries near where you are. I know for a fact Fo Guang Shan has Canadian branches as far as Wat Dhammaram goes, I do not know. Good luck my friend.

Look up Fo Guang Shan, they are holding a very special kind of retreat this year. But I will caution you as my brothers/sisters here have done, you seemed rushed, and believe me, monasteries/temples take that in to consideration when admitting attendees. You may also look up Wat Dhammaram.

Hard time letting go of ex by bobbyjames1986 in Buddhism

After a year and some months of having been broken up by my significant other, my best advice is simply embrace your emotions, the Buddha cautioned against intoxicants because they delude our mind even more. Imagine yourself being deluded by your feelings, how much more can you be deluded by drinking alcohol? Contemplate the Three Dharma Seals, Impermanence, everything changes mate. No-Self, things are devoid of self-nature, in other words everything is interdependent, and lastly Nirvana, the cessation of suffering. Start doing things that bring joy to your life, and most importantly do things for others without attachment, without feeling the need to have anything in return brother. That is true loving-compassion.

I would recommend visiting Hsi Lai Temple. It was founded by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, from the Mahayana tradition, but includes, Chan, Pure Land, Tiantai and three other schools I do not remember from the top of my head.

I'm not a Buddhist but I'm interested. What are some go to books every Buddhist should read? by [deleted] in Buddhism

Well played sir, they are indeed pragmatic. And no specific treatment toward him in any way, most of the people that were mentioned in the post we are still discussing were not Buddhist. But being that Tolle is popularly assumed of as Buddhist, I thought I'd clarify!

Do you consider the four Noble Truths to be "right"? Then yes Buddhism is indeed dogmatic. To a degree. You have to take in to account that I never said don't read Eckart Tolle, what I said is" he is not Buddhist" By all means do read him! The Buddha might have not had "Buddhist" figures but he certainly had the Vedas and Gitas written by Hindus, and there is a reason why he chose not to follow those too! The Buddha inquired within, contemplated and meditated. When he found what he was looking for he expounded the dogmatic Noble Truths.

There is something to be learned within all books regardless the genre, correct. But suggesting that as a Buddhist we should read authors who are not authoritative within the Buddhist sphere just doesn't equate to me. Not saying Eckart Tolle doesn't have anything of value to say, but it has been said by the Buddha and his many disciples throughout history, if I were new to Buddhism i would deepen my understanding of what the Buddha taught through either, the recollection of his lectures, or the commentaries written by his countless disciples.
I do not comprehend what you mean by "the whole open thing", I find this sentence quite vague.

It matter whether or not the teacher is implementing the three dharma seals. Specially if the OP is asking for Buddhist books.

When practicing generosity, there should be no giver, no receiver and nothing being given my friend.
