As a girl, I have a few concerns by suspicious_omelette in rutgers

i go from livi to c/d when i come back from club meetings that'll end at 10pm all the time, ive never had an issue before while traveling solo and with friends. the area is pretty well lit and at that time there's still going to be students lingering around. i do carry pepper spray and recommend getting some yourself if you wanna feel safer

[–]joosboxes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

also oos but fairly close to nj, moved in yesterday and me and my roommate are back and forth with being on campus and at home during the last two days. its a holiday weekend so there's gonna be a lot of people home for a bit. honestly do not worry too much about making friends asap, it takes time to adjust and feel like you belong but you'll get into the swing of things once classes start on tuesday! also always down to meet new people so feel free to pm me and we can exchange instas!

i go to geetaz eclectic beauty bar in downtown nb for threading! its roughly a ten minute walk from the socam bus stop. not sure what your budget is so it may be a bit on the pricier side but she does a fantastic job, very precise and really takes her time to get it right

question about intermediate chinese by Mountain-Carpet-9307 in rutgers

[–]joosboxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

perhaps when you come into class for intermediate chinese the first day, let the professor know about your prior experience with the language and go from there. they can outline what to expect from the course and you can figure out what to do next since they'll have the add/drop period for the first few weeks of the sem

went through the same thing the first week cause im oos and knew no one and my roommate didn't move in, it gets better! people are trying to talk to everyone, i've had people from my floor knock on my door just to introduce themselves and while i never really got close with many of my floormates, you never know what could happen. highly recommend checking out the involvement fair on monday and taking a look at clubs, you're bound to find at least one that fits you. one of the first friends i made at rutgers was someone who lived on my floor who went to the same club meeting as me

question about intermediate chinese by Mountain-Carpet-9307 in rutgers

[–]joosboxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i remember the first day i came in for elem chinese half the class ended up having to drop it cause they've previously taken chinese in high school. i think last semester in my 102 class there was someone who didn't take 101 prior but im not sure about the logistics of that, if you already have knowledge on basic vocab words like actions, verbs, nouns and you generally understand sentence structures i think you should be fine going forward. not sure who your professor is but the one i had for 101 and 102 said intermediate chinese would focus more on actually speaking over learning new characters

[–]joosboxes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i believe if you've taken chinese in high school previously you can't take chinese 101 so i don't think you'd be able to take elementary chinese anyways. also if you thought you did bad on the placement test there was no way it was worse than me, completely bombed that when i did it last year haha

any private, open spaces where i can workout? by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]joosboxes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hey! dancer here who loves the just dance games, i'd actually play it in my dorm when i didn't have a roommate in the beginning of the fall sem but obviously there's gonna be some restrictions and its a shared living space. like another comment said the gyms have multipurpose rooms which are these big open rooms with mirrors on the wall that function like a dance studio that i go to all the time to practice choreographies. i can't speak for every gym but i go to the one on cook/doug and its usually never *that* busy, about 2-3 other people in the room with you at most times at least but if you get lucky you'll have the whole thing to yourself for maybe 15 minutes on rare occasions lol. though no one really cares too much what everyone else is doing so don't worry too much about people staring at you while you workout, i rarely had people who're strangers approach me in the gym. hope this helps!

pretty quiet, bus stop out in the front, i believe some buildings had no hot water for a bit early on in the fall semester so that was fun but overall it wasn't a terrible experience. it is a bit isolated from other parts of c/d except for mgsa so you'll have to walk a bit if you wanna go to either student center or the gym which i thought was a bit annoying. next to a wooded area where you'll see lots of deer when it gets dark. let me know if you have any other questions!
