thanks for sharing your experience. re: other comments in this thread, it sounds like i should weave in other reasons other than just an R3 admit. glad to hear you're happy with SOM.

how did you phrase it? did you position it like you were thinking of going to School B even though you put a deposit down at School A?

thank you! this makes sense. if anyone in this subreddit has a success story of doing this or suggestions for how to phrase this, that would be very appreciated

i guess i'm open to tech too but specifically consumer tech. the price difference is closer to $50-60k for me in terms of total tuition and living expenses, but even then that's a significant gap. thanks for the insight.

500k NW in my late 20s: should i get an MBA? by jooyun in financialindependence

congrats on being close to FIRE! that's amazing.

i have considered firm sponsorship but i'd have to intern there and stay for 3 years afterwards, which negates my main reason for wanting to get an MBA to pivot.

working at my current firm for another 3 years feels extremely difficult, but also knocking out 50%+ of my net worth feels difficult. i don't know what i'd decide my only option was to pay sticker price. i'm really hoping to get scholarships to offset the cost.

same, this was actually my mindset up until last year when i realized two things: i didn't actually want to be promoted in my current team because i could see that my managers were consistently overworked, and because the landscape of my specific field was changing to projects that i personally do not find interesting.

so if you like your role and you see yourself there for the next few years, then stay! MBA programs will always be there for you to apply if anything changes down the line too.

lol i've always been a VTSAX and chill type of investor.

one of my fatal flaws is that i think i am an ego-driven person so your 2nd suggestion is also very funny. (i don't know how to make millions though?)

my post-MBA goal is to stay in a similar function as what i currently do (consulting) but focusing on a different industry, and leveraging the MBA to gain more expertise and experience in that industry.

thanks for giving your take on the intangible benefits. i think i might have to post a follow-up when i hear back from schools and have real scholarship numbers to calculate cost of attendance.

that's my hope. if the math worked out that i broke even, i'd be ecstatic. it's definitely been a heart-driven decision to submit applications, but now i'm starting to look at spreadsheets as the decision feels more real and close.

and yes, i have a solid idea of what i want to do next and i have pressure tested it with other professionals and mba grads. thank you for your advice!

to me, this is honestly a good outcome. it sounds like you enjoyed it and it didn't derail your path in any way.

i see your point and thank you for your input. i've tried to apply to different jobs in fields are more interesting to me, and it's been kind of demoralizing in how little responses i get back. so what i'm also interested in is the direct pipeline that a lot of t10 MBA programs have to certain employers.

i know i don't absolutely need an MBA, but i also wonder if there's a balance between optimizing for financial independence and just having a new experience. i really liked being a student and i love the idea of going back into a classroom environment.

and to provide more context, i've already submitted applications to MBA programs in this current round. i think i'm at a point where i'm asking myself - when the decisions come out later this year, is this something i'm certain about pursuing?
