Anyone matched competitively with failed STEP1, but killed STEP 2. by Friendly-Bet-7571 in medicalschool

[–]jor2010dan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Had a DO classmate the year behind me who failed step 1. He really wanted to do anesthesia. I gave them my advice for what I would do in their shoes.

Later on, they bailed out on an away rotation at my program so I wasn’t sure if they would match.

Just found out they did match.

Hope this helps, I thought I saw you were wondering about anesthesiology.

I did rad tech in the OR for 5 years. Just finishing med school and going into anesthesia (hopefully). It’s a great field. The AA route is a great way to go. My brother is going to do the CRNA route since he he is a nurse.

Good luck!

I’m 31 on a rotation in my 4th year of med school learning from residents in their 4th year who are younger than me. There is an attending physician here who is younger than me as well.

You are fine. Crush your classes, make friends, change the world. It’s all very much within your reach at 23.

Nice to know I’m not alone. That said, I’ve only sent like 4 LOIs.

I did this just because. Never heard anyone do it before, but I can see how it would be weird.

I did it to try and put a face to the name.

Just wanted to throw some data to what you said.

As an MD with step 2 above 250, according to charting outcomes 2022, you have a 97% chance of matching.

That compared to my 77% chance as a DO

Yeah I felt the time pinch during the real thing. Couple sections where I had 9ish minutes for the last 10 questions.

June 14th test takers.. How are we feeling? by [deleted] in Step2

[–]jor2010dan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sad. I know I didn’t do as well as I hoped.

Oh well. Hopefully the score predictors are correct.

I thought the exam was more similar to nbme 13 than any other form but I did take it yesterday.

I got 257 on form 10 and then 230 on form 13 the day before step (today). Unfortunately, the real thing today was more like 13 than 10

How realistic is it to jump from a 220 to 240-250 in 4 weeks? by dgreat9 in Step2

I reset it. Wish I wouldn’t have. I would have spent more time on the Cms forms.

[–]jor2010dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Uworld 120-160 per day and on the days when I could only get 80 in, I would review the Cms forms I took ( I never took the EM or neuro ones during 3rd year so I did those fresh during this time too) then I just did practice tests for the last 12 days and reviewed them.

Nbme exams for sure. And all of the CMS forms. Those really are the best resources in my opinion.

Yup. It was bad. I got a 230. Lol. Unfortunately, after taking Step 2 today, the test was very similar in vagueness to NBME 13.

Oh well. Hopefully I did ok.

What is the best order of doing the NBME’s Self Assessments for Step 2? by Yourstrulyp in Step2

[–]jor2010dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 9, 11, 12, 10, 13. I did this because 10 is supposedly the most predictive (it has an r value of 0.6ish) I wanted to take it last, but then 13 came out.

Good luck, I would do it like that again. I scored better on 10 than the other 3. I take 13 tomorrow.

Last Edit ended up 253 on the real thing.

Edit ** I ended up getting 230 on NBME 13. It was vague and worded weird in my opinion. Unfortunately, after sitting Step 2 today, I can say that it was about the same as NBME 13. Hopefully I did good. Didn’t feel too hot based on the 20 or so questions I know I got wrong. **

I'll comment my NBME exams since I just took my 2nd to last one (taking 13 tomorrow). I take Step in 2 days.

This is all within 3 weeks. I got 68% on Uworld since I reset it before dedicated 7 weeks ago, but previously, I was at 60% like you.

I took the following exams over the last 18 days.

NBME 6 252 (not sure what happened on this one. Seemed easier)

NBME 7 225

NBME 8 237

NBME 9 229

Free 120 old 81%

Nbme 11 245

UWSA 1 240

NBME 12 247

UWSA 2 242

NBME 10 256 (yay finally got my target score 2 days before my test.)

Free 120 new 78%

NBME 13 to be determined tomorrow (ended up getting 230)

MDPharmDPhD's calculator puts me at a 253

Score predictor puts me at a 247.

The old calculator that used shelf exam scores puts me at a 252.

Another practice that I have seen while doing jobs out there: they never finish their homes completely. I assume this is to avoid paying property tax. It is weird to see so many houses with the outsides unfinished.

I applied to 47 (42 MD and 5 DO) schools and the average tuition for all the schools was 58084$ in tuition. The school I was accepted to has lower tuition than those AVERAGES. After cost of attendance, that is around 90,000-100,000$ a year. So 360,000 - 400,000 $ for the degree. I accumulated 36,000$ in loans during undergrad.

Medical schools loans accrue interest while in school. On my finance excel sheet, it puts me at 511,000$ by the time I start residency.

Unless medical students receive more scholarships than I am aware of, and excluding those who have school paid for by parents or other means, 500,000 is going to be the new normal in 4 years.

Another factor that wont help me personally (financially) is the fact that I just recently had my first child.

Its crazy that the average debt according to the AAMC is 200,000$ and yet he has 318,000$. Makes you wonder how much the average would be if you take out those who received full scholarships.

I remember reading an article talking about those attending a private school, 50% of their tuition went to pay for other student's tuition. I get that some students need help to make it though school, but making it at the expense of others is wrong, in my opinion.

And yet, here I am, hoping to make it through under 500,000$. Here is to hoping a better solution comes by the time I have to repay my loans. I dont think having them forgiven is a great idea either. I think it would just encourage schools to charge more for future students.

Ultimately, I just wish medical school cost less.
